It is not punishment for your past actions. It is punishment for the crimes you are going to commit.

Continuing the tragic tale of the man who become Baron Muster we get to see the horrors inflicted upon him as his fate refuses to allow him to die no matter how hard he must suffer. Through torture, betrayal, and rejection a once optimistic man will delve into the pits of anarchy and sin to achieve his ultimate goals. We even get a quick chapter how depraved he had become before returning to the future (which is the past for the main setting as we learn about Yoko and Erica's pasts) where an escape plan has been put into motion leading to a chase into a frozen wasteland that is not over yet by the volumes end.

Erica has been having it rough in her own way with a troubled past and a tendency to collect parental figures but only time will tell how this potentially sad girl becomes her twisted future self. Of course that is all assuming the escape is not all part of Baron Muster's to start with and she is simply playing along to alleviate her boredom. Hopefully she is not that twisted already. :)

The story continues, doling out more revelations bit by bit, and yet always seeming to leave more questions than answers. This one goes heavily into the backstory of one of its new villains, which is a morbidly fascinating tale that I wouldn’t mind except for the long wait between volumes. Overall our storyline has barely progressed over the last few volumes, spending more and more time in backstories. As a result we have two or three timelines going at once, both the revelations of Alita as a child and also what is happening in the “present” after the Z.O.T.T. when Alita goes back to Mars, a plot we haven’t had updated in three volumes now. This has left the story open in several very important spots that I hope will be dealt with before too much longer.

I fucking hated this volume. In fact, I'm going to pretend I don't know half the information this volume revealed.

Of course the maske tumor would present on a woman as being a single face on her massive boob with a mouth where her nipple used to be. What the fuck. And of course the main character of this entire fucking series would be that specific tumor. She couldn't be a fucking shoulder tumor or a back tumor or even a thigh tumor, she has to be a boob tumor. I'm so fucking pissed, I'm spitting. I wish I could have coffee with Kishiro, just so that I could splash it in his face.
Honestly, beyond being pissed, I'm genuinely upset and disappointed. I was so excited when I started Alita to have a series where the female characters weren't overly sexualized. And then of course it had to devolve into what it is now with the sexy twin bunny girls and cat-tailed Alita and the sexy anime poses that female characters do when they are literally fucking dying-- as if their deaths aren't worth showing unless some immature creep can get off to them.
And I know it's just a stupid manga, but I really loved it in the beginning and now I can't go a single chapter without being reminded how this man (and so many other men) think about women. I'm just so sad that it turned into this.

In this volume, we get a deep dive into the origin of Baron Muster.

Again, leave it to Yukito Kishiro to move the focus away from Alita, and still have the book be very entertaining. In the previous series, there were volumes of the book where the spotlight shone on a different character for the majority of the book. And while those instances were sometimes successful sometimes less so, this time it works really well. Baron Muster is definitely an entertaining villain, and learning how he came to be just rounds out his character even more so. You come to somewhat understand why he is the way he is, even if he is almost cartoon like in his villainy nowadays.

We do get a small bit of Alita in this one, with Erica rejoining her and her mom towards the end of the book. Erica actually gets bodyguards to transport them away from Muster and his cronies, but they are essentially being hunted now. The book ends on a hell of a cliffhanger of a fight, that I am eager to read in the next volume.

This was definitely entertaining and worth the read. Recommended for fans of the series so far.

I really could have used a recap page.

We start midway through the origin of Baron Muster, so we're in the past of the past. Scientists experiment on him with no regard to his health or comfort to find out the things they can do with his masketoma. Turns out an important aristocrat also has masketoma. Our guy is just a guinnea pig. There's a lot of body horror elements here.

Then we jump back to the time of young Ericka and Yoko. Baron Muster reveals a secret about Yoko. You've been wondering why she has a cyborg body at such a young age, right? Baron Muster gives us her origin in one offhand sentence.

Ericka ditches Muster and hires those bandits from before to get herself and Yoko safely away. A car chase ensues. Yukito Kishiro is always at his best during action sequences.

The origin of Baron Muster is finally revealed! This is probably the longest tale of how he became the villain in Mars Chronicle series! Not much I can say but although I do felt its a little perverse, this volume speaks in many layers as to how Alita origin is slowly unraveling.

Not much in the way of moving the plot forward, but there are some tasty revelations pertaining to the new villain and Alita herself.
