Intended for managers, and beginners, in this book, you discover types of machine learning techniques, models, and algorithms that can help achieve results for your company.
This book is available for free via download https://www.ibm.com/downloads/documen... It was part of the course literature for a course that I'm currently reading at the University of Borås called Project Management for AI-Centric Projects. It a short introduction into machine learning divided into 6 chapters. 1) Understanding Machine Learning 2) Applying Machine Learning 3) Looking Inside Machine Learning 4) Getting Started with Machine Learning 5) Learning Machine Skills 6) Using Machine Learning to Provide Solutions to Business Problems and then ending with a 7th chapter that gives Ten Predictions on the Future of Machine Learning. The book is very high level and as such serves only as a short introduction to the subject. Best part was the section Getting Educated in Chapter 5 that section gives a broad and great list of places to learn more.
This book could have easily been a series of no more then 5 blog posts, if even that. While there were snippets that were interesting, overall most of this is way to generic and lacking in factual info to be of much use.
If you've just heard about the term "machine learning" and have absolutely no clue what it is, not even used things like ChatGPT or any other Generative AI, well this might be a nice thing to skim over for the non-technical person for business purposes, but honestly, there are better things to spend your time on.
Also note that this came out in 2018, and given the fast pace the sector is moving, this is actually somewhat outdated.
I'm giving it two stars because it is if nothing else, useful as a nomenclature for the things it does contain.
Even though it's written mainly from a buisiness perspective, if you are a manager intending to use Machine Learning you might end up with more questions than answers after finishing the book.
If you are enthusiastic about machine learning, you will just find basic concepts and pointers to usefull resources. Not enough information for a coder who's intending to start a project.
A 2018 intro to Machine Learning (in business) for (IBM?) managers, so they can sound smarter. Very little concrete examples of anything, just suggestions of thing 'like Netflix's recommendation algorithm' - yeah what manager wouldn't have liked to have one of those back in 2018. I'm not really impressed this is on the reading list of my 2024 Mini MBA in Ai - to be honest. I realize the principles of machine learning hasn't changed, but quite a lot related to the field has...
