Robert Kirkman is an American comic book writer best known for his work on The Walking Dead, Invincible for Image Comics, as well as Ultimate X-Men and Marvel Zombies for Marvel Comics. He has also collaborated with Image Comics co-founder Todd McFarlane on the series Haunt. He is one of the five partners of Image Comics, and the only one of the five who was not one of the original co-founders of that publisher.

Robert Kirkman's first comic books were self-published under his own Funk-o-Tron label. Along with childhood friend Tony Moore, Kirkman created Battle Pope which was published in late 2001. Battle Pope ran for over 2 years along with other Funk-o-Tron published books such as InkPunks and Double Take.

In July of 2002, Robert's first work for another company began, with a 4-part SuperPatriot series for Image, along with Battle Pope backup story artist Cory Walker. Robert's creator-owned projects followed shortly thereafter, including Tech Jacket, Invincible and Walking Dead.

Collects Invincible #25-30, in which Ryan Ottley gets to let loose as Mark is taken to another world to save them from the Viltrumites. The science fiction feel of this series picks up big-time, but the creators keep it real by maintaining all the character interactions and nuances. The series really takes off from this volume for me. 8 out of 12, Four Stars, so the best volume yet. Oh, and Science Dog debuts.

The book is really starting to pick up steam, with some overall fantastic worldbuilding. Mark heads to another planet to defend them from the Viltrumites. Ottley really shines in this huge slobber-knocker of a fight. It's a place he hasn't gone too very often and it looks fantastic. The book is chock-full of wonderful character moments and revelations. What I like is that even with these planet shaking battles, the book remains a character driven book. It always returns to Mark and his relationships and how he learns to deal with his friends and family as he slowly becomes the world's greatest hero.

THIS WAS SICK! Best volume so far and because I'm re-reading, gosh, does it gets fucking exciting from now on!

Original review (from 2016):
4.75 Stars.
Great volume. It was fun, exciting, dramatic and emotional with a few twists that I sure wasn't expecting.

The main plotline of A different World is Mark's trip to another planet. It is quite funny how Kirkman introduces this new extraterrestrial race with the face of an old 'familiar' character. They come to Mark to ask for his help with the imminent destruction and takeover of their home planet. And how can our hero refuse? Even though Cecil is not happy about this, of course Mark decides to go help and protect everyone he can. What he doesn't expect is the surprises that are waiting for him there.

What can I say? I love Mark. I've said that a million times. He is the heart of this story. And I gotta say, as opposed to classic, mainstream superhero comics, Invincible once again delivers on the personal level. The big focus isn't on the spectacle and fights (even though, they were great) but Mark's relationships with his family, girlfriend and superhero friends and associates. Are there great action sequences? Yes. Excitement and plot twists? Yes. Superhero fighting with villains capable of destroying the world? Yes. But at the end of the day, Invincible is a character driven story, one that makes you engage and care about these characters. That, in my opinion, is the greatest thing about this title.

The art once again fits the story. Ottley's fantastic and familiar artwork adds to the humor, the gore, the suspense and he delivers a great job especially in this volume, that has such emotional scenes and a lot of dramatic fights.

This volume also sets up a lot of what's to come, there were quite interesting developments and a new character that I can't wait to see again.

The series picks up speed, getting into my favorite arcs soon. However, this one is nothing to swat away.

Guess who's back? Nolan's back! Very exciting. To see son and father meet again, on edge, keeps it interesting throughout. I even loved the build up towards it, having one of the aliens make believe he was one of Mark's favorite comic book characters to recruit him to his planet to meet his father. Was great. The fight? Oh shit, it was fantastic. Like it feels like Dragon Ball Z if Dragon Ball Z was bloodier and more fucked up (And also good after freeza Sega.)

The art really shines in that fight and the big splash page was both exciting and fucked up. Get ready for some deaths you wouldn't except. Nolan ain't no bitch he gonna fuck shit up.

The only negative was the side story with the twins. However, it's to set up future things but it's sooooo boring. But Robot made his first move and he becomes one of my faves later for some screwed up reasons, so stick around.

A 4/5 baby! Let's do it!

More twists in this volume, which I really liked. I also liked the weird alien planet stuff, because I'm a sucker for cheesy sci-fi in my superhero comics. Spoilery thoughts:

More wrinkles appear on this super-suit of a graphic novel. The only way it's going to get ironed out is with a hearty splash of blood.

I'm seriously loving this series, and this volume has a real head of steam. Mauler is great as always, but Mark's adventures are pretty stupendous. Bloooooooody goodness.

I'm totally feeling for his mom at the end.

No spoilers, but Mark Grayson has quickly grown into one of my favourite characters. My only complaint about this series is that I didn't get into it sooner.

In the standard sketch section at the end of this book, Kirkman points out he was worried that someone would anticipate the big twist in this book, but I HAD NO CLUE. I'm so glad that this book doesn't get the same kind of press as DC and Marvel titles because it means I don't have spoilers for every story arc popping up and ruining things.

Like the cover description says, the events of this book will change Mark's life forever. It's handled pretty damn well. The reactions are believable and the situation is somewhat as well. However, I wish there had been more of an opportunity to explain some things. Some of the motivations just aren't clear. It's sort of enough that events happened, but it's very hard to understand why the character chose that in the moment.

That said, it's really nitpicking on my part. The escalation, the conflict, THE BATTLES, it's all top-notch. Ryan Ottley really delivers some amazing work in this volume and there are tons of amazing splash pages. The ONE THING that I really strongly disliked was the fact that the female Mantis People had boobs. I mean...really? Come on.

Otherwise it's a visceral experience that focuses more on its own story rather than resolving other arcs that have been set up. Don't get me wrong, it still does that, but it's very focused on what's happening right now in a way that sets it apart from many other volumes of Invincible. While Mark is off-world, there's also some great flashes back to Earth. I always snicker at the little narration bubbles. For instance, one of the times we go back to Earth, there are like 4 different places that Kirkman wants to check in with. It starts with "Meanwhile, on Earth" then "Meanwhile in another place altogether (but still on Earth)" and then a couple more it ends with "OK, last one." It's little touches like that that make the book so entertaining.

There's also some great stuff between Mark and Cecil about what it means to be a superhero and what Mark is getting from Cecil and vice versa. It's a nice look at both of their motivations and gives you the first glimpse in a while of how they actually look at each other. There's a bit of tension there and I can see it going somewhere eventually.

Also some great moments for Donald and Robot's story progresses a lot more. Can't WAIT to see where that winds up!

What I liked :
➕ The art was fantastic , and specially vivid in cases of action scenes .
➕ The whole angle is really promising and I cant wait to see where it goes .
➕ The role of Cecil is also changing apparently and it makes me wonder where it will go .
➕ I was very happy about the Rexplode Karma .

What I didn't Like :
➖ The reunion was nice and all, but it also came out of nowhere and really the payoff that I expected to come after the initial parting of the ways was absent and honestly I feel a bit cheated .
➖ In the end , Invincible still hasn't beaten a big villain on his own.

How did I not read this series before??? I'm super late to the party. But this comic is just SO. DAMN. GOOD!!!
Kirkman truly understands what makes a superhero story good, perhaps even better than he understands zombies, and we all know he knows a thing or two about THAT.
But yeah, I can't get over just how amazing Invincible is, and how much better it gets with each volume.
It also doesn't hurt that Ryan Ottley is such a terrific artist.
I'm so happy I still have almost 20 volumes ahead to enjoy, I hope they all maintain this level of fun.

This was such a great book, Mark is called to another world by Space dog look alike turns out its some insect like figure and then we have him go there against Cecil's warnings and there he finds that its his dad that rules the kingdom and he says he has changed for the better and he is defecting from the Viltrumite Empire. Then we have more revelations about how the latter will now attack and he wants Mark to protect his newborn son and his new wife. Turns out their life span is super short and in 6 months of a human life, an entire generation life happens. So Mark has to deal with that and team up with his dad to fight the evil Alien lords led by Lucan and its a brutal and bloody battle with some epic moments and fights but Nolan is captured and they appoint Mark as the new leader for earth and he returns to Earth to his girlfriend and Cecil and Mom with his new bro and things have never been more awkward. Meanwhile there is something building with the Mauler clones and Omnipotus (Invasion in future?). Great stuff and continues to build up the hype that is this world and further progresses the Viltrumite war and the art is just gorgeous on all levels!

Invincible Vol. 6 A Different World collects issues 25-30 of the series written by Robert Kirkman with art by Ryan Ottley.

Mark travels to another planet to help an alien species that ages from life to death in less than a year. While on this planet Mark is reunited with his past and helps fight off a Viltrumite invasion.

This was a fantastic volume. It brought a ton of emotion, action, and story progress. We hadn't got many huge fights in this series yet and the art work was amazing. I also really liked how Mark tells his friends and families when he is traveling off world and seeing how they miss and worry for him while he is gone. It's something DC and Marvel almost never touch on. It's the little details in ordinarylife that really make the superhero story stand out.

Invincible is the best superhero comic in the universe.

Ooo consequences.

World: Once again the order sets the tone for the book, it’s great it’s beautiful and it makes the book not as Graham and dark as it should be. The world building is also very solid and continues with the story of Mark and his adventures. It’s tied into character development so the world builds as the characters grow. Being on a different planet was interesting and playing with time was also interesting with the dynamics of government and rulership.

Story: Stories will bring means again wonderful night long and wonderful tone and pacing. I did not expect what happened in the planet and it was good. It was full of consequences and changes the status quo which I like. There was a lot of family drama which is also the cornerstone for this book. It was good

Character: Mark really comes into his own this book. He really is a hero and his moral compass is on full display. We also get a very human side of him when he deals with the confrontation on the planet, it's a conflicted response and I like it. It really shows that this book is not black and white. The new character for this book and subsequent trip back to Earth will be interesting.

Solid. Status quo changing.

Onward to the next book!

A good comic series. Nice plot and art. The stories are a little more graphic and adult than the ones I started off reading in the 1960s but still not as bad as many of the ones that today's comics have turned into. The stories remind me of reading the good solid fun comic books of the older Marvel and DC era of the 1960's but undated to today's world. Recommended

This is my favorite volume thus far. There is a lot of reality hitting a lot of characters all over the place, but nothing I'd call melodrama. And that's key.

Tension has been building up on a few fronts for a while. Good character development will do that. And now it's time for some conflicts. Some will be minor while others are major. Part of what I love about this volume is that guessing which is which is fruitless.

Summary:

Mark Grayson has always known he had a better-than-average chance of succeeding with superpowers. After all, his father has them and promised to inherit them someday. This helped prepare Mark for superhero life long before those powers came to be.

So, things haven't been great for Mark, but he is getting a handle on things. So naturally, that's the moment when the universe decides to strike. He's been called to another planet, as he is their only hope of saving it. But Mark happens to be familiar with the specific threat this planet faces...

Review:

Oh wow. Each time I think we've hit peak emotional impact, only to be surprised by what happens next. In many ways, Invincible Vol 6 feels like the highest emotional impact thus far (second maybe to the big reveal about his dad). I know it only feels that way at the moment, though, and that something will come along to completely change my frame of reference. Again.

There are a lot of highs and lows in this volume. So when you sit down to read it, do so in a space where you can explain and cry out as needed. Trust me on this one. I gasped and squeaked on more than one occasion.

Loved the fights in this volume, especially as they carried much more emotional charge than usual. Throw in a few other twists and surprises; you've got a full volume! As always, this series keeps dropping one or two-page teasers for future plot arcs. I think there are about half a dozen in the air at this point. So I'm looking forward to seeing where those go.

Highlights:

Superhero Teen
Coming of Age with a Twist
Now an Amazon TV Series

This is the first book that constitutes an entire story arc with a beginning, middle, and end. Mark, against Cecil’s wishes, is convinced by an alien to go help out his planet. Turns out Mark’s dad is on said planet, and does indeed seem to have changed since that big fight they had. I was not expecting to see him again so soon, and like Mark, doubted it was even him at first. But it’s him, and even though he did lure Mark to this planet under false pretenses, he seems sincere. What follows are events not quite as shocking as those early in the series but still brutal and revelatory. And a new character is introduced that I can only suspect will have a large role in the future. I’m intrigued.

While the majority of this volume focuses on Mark’s off-world adventure, a few Earth-based side plots are given page time. The main one being the Mauler Twins. And I think we all shouldn’t be surprised about what is happening with Robot. This stuff isn’t as interesting to me as the main plot with Mark though.

I admire how this series has lots of superhero action but always remains character driven first and foremost.

An alien asks Mark to help save its home planet. Mark agrees, even though Cecil advises against it. At their destination they meet Nolan, Mark's father and new ruler of the planet. He had Mark brought to him to try to save the planet from a Viltrumite invasion. Mark is surprised to find that Nolan has begun his life anew on this planet and has a son with Andressa, one of the locals. The boy would be seen as weak by the long-lived Viltrumites, since his mother's life span is only 9 months.

NOW. WE. ARE. GETTING. GOOD.

the reveals in this were legit shocking and I feel like the art and writing (even if it still feels a bit too early 2000’s sometimes) has taken a step up. the action was really good and those two page spreads are *chefs kiss*
