Robert Kirkman is an American comic book writer best known for his work on The Walking Dead, Invincible for Image Comics, as well as Ultimate X-Men and Marvel Zombies for Marvel Comics. He has also collaborated with Image Comics co-founder Todd McFarlane on the series Haunt. He is one of the five partners of Image Comics, and the only one of the five who was not one of the original co-founders of that publisher.

Robert Kirkman's first comic books were self-published under his own Funk-o-Tron label. Along with childhood friend Tony Moore, Kirkman created Battle Pope which was published in late 2001. Battle Pope ran for over 2 years along with other Funk-o-Tron published books such as InkPunks and Double Take.

In July of 2002, Robert's first work for another company began, with a 4-part SuperPatriot series for Image, along with Battle Pope backup story artist Cory Walker. Robert's creator-owned projects followed shortly thereafter, including Tech Jacket, Invincible and Walking Dead.

As Mark Grayson gets a better hold on his powers, alongside Eve he is on the track of bombers! He gets to go face to face with an Alien called... Allen! The introduction and fate of this reality's Avengers, the Guardians of the Globe and leader Immortal, is up for grabs! A slight improvement as the superhero as a teen angst drama is lessened to give way to more sci-fi and the stunning twist in #7, that I never saw coming! Savage Dragon also guests! 6 out of 12, Three Stars.

Teen superhero Mark Grayson/Invincible is called upon to protect the Earth from an aggressive alien - but what does it really want? Elsewhere something terrible happens to the Guardians of the Globe. But that’s not all - Mark’s gotta look at prospective colleges to go to while helping his friend Eve through a personal upset. Gee whizz it sure ain’t easy being a superhero! ... zzz…

Two volumes into Robert Kirkman and Cory Walker’s Invincible series and I’m not seeing how it’s had nearly the same longevity as Kirkman's other, far more popular series, The Walking Dead. This book has a lot of popular superhero character copies but Kirkman doesn’t do or say anything about the characters they mimic - it’s like they’re just there for readers to spot for no reason.

Mark is obviously a Superboy copy and his dad is “Superman”. The Guardians of the Globe ARE the Justice League while “Rorschach” makes an appearance along with copies of Spider-Man villains the Vulture and the Rhino. Savage Dragon also cameos as himself. But so what? They just act like themselves, or their counterparts, to be more accurate. It’s like reading bad fanfic.

The opening chapter has Invincible fight an alien and ends up solving their dispute by talking to him instead of just throwing punches. It’s an obvious commentary to most superhero comics readers - if only superheroes talked first, acted second, nearly every fight could be avoided - that’s been made before by others so I wouldn’t say Kirkman’s doing anything special in that regard.

Other than that, there’s some bad sitcom crap about cheating boyfriends and parents misinterpreting what their kids are up to. One interesting thing happens in this volume that I won't spoil here and the rest is just boring fluff. So far, Invincible is (soiled superhero) pants!

This is where the series begins to turn. While Mark deals with typical teenage things like picking a college and girl problems, the Justice League analogs, the Guardians of the Globe, are wiped out. It's your first indication that this may be more than your average teenage superhero book. There's also a great issue where Allen the Alien first appears. Ryan Ottley comes on the book part way through and the art gets a whole lot better. He was just supposed to get the book back on track and ends up drawing the rest of the series.

This is the second collection of a long running comic series. The summary for this collection is basically the same as the first collection. Mark is dealing with being a superhero while also dealing with being a teenager.

I did watch the first season of this comic collection so I know what happens. I am trying to review these collections without that knowledge. And that is where the problem arises. If I didn't know what is to come I really do not know if I would continue with this series. At this point there is nothing really special here that warrants all the praise this comic receives. A teenager dealing with both being a superhero and a teenager. That has been done before and in a more entertaining way. The artwork? It picks up with the last issues but nothing truly amazing. I did like how this comic collection did their take on famous counterparts from other comics. That was enjoyable. I will say that this collection did finally reveal the big bad and it does feel like we are finally getting into the meat of the story. It feels like that I finally will get to the part why readers love this comic.

Like I said if I didn't know what is about to happen I would not be really impressed. I think part of this falls on that these collections are only four issues. They did not help themselves with this. It is way too short and we are getting very little story before it is over. If you are new to this whole universe you might be asking why is this so liked by many readers. I am hoping the next collection finally reveals the answer to that question.

To think that such a comic like this could be so charming at first, give us just a little taste of blood in the middle, and then throw us for a slooooooow loop... I'm honestly rather impressed with the writing, but it is only in retrospect that I'm completely smitten.

So far, I've watched the tv show twice and am now just reading the comic. Some major differences/additions to the tv show. But honestly, NOT that much. The core is still the core.

Loving it.

Re-read!: OH I FORGOT ABOUT ALLEN THE ALIEN'S FIRST APPEARANCE. He's my second favorite character after Mark! Ohhh, I missed ya red little alien.

Original Review:
**Warning: this text may contain spoilers** 4 Stars!
I liked this volume so much more than the first one and I really enjoyed Family Matters.
I wasn't expecting to read this volume so soon after volume 1, but I started reading the first couple of pages and then I couldn't stop. This is a great sequel and things are starting to get dark and exciting. But there are also so many laugh-out-loud moments, it's still a charming, funny read overall.

So, volume one was Kirkman's introduction to this world, the characters and most importantly, I think, the relationships.Volume two is expanding and now we have the introduction of ''The Guardians of the Globe''. Kirkman's take on the Justice League. Not gonna lie, I was enjoying so much the first time we see each one of the members. Great parody introductions. Also, we explore more of Mark's ''civil life''. I just love how Robert mixes the superhero action and the teenage angst and school life, it's such a well balanced dynamic, it's never cheesy, but fun and refreshing and hilarious at times.

One interesting thing, I really love how Mark and his dad are so close together, but we see really early, with the introduction of Allen, the alien, and the Coalition of Planets, how different from each other are. It was a subtle hint, but I'm so intrigued with Omni-Man and Invincible's future dynamic Also, you know, he

There was a big omg moment and I wasn't expecting any of it. It gave the series such a dramatic, dark moment, a great twist for whatever's to come. I'm so excited to keep reading and delving deeper into Invincible.

This volume once again collects only four issues, so is a fast paced, exciting, easy read.

The Art is nothing out of the ordinary, I do have some problems here and there but I'm liking it more and more with every page and it fits to the story and overall feel of this series.

What I lIked :

So having read what happens in the next volume , I think I am a bit overzealous with my rating ... Sue me !

There's just a pure sense of entertainment and fun in this comics , breaking the stereotypical superhero tropes and making fun of it all but also making entertaining adventures and daily live struggles of a teenager plus the obvious growing up story for Mark aka the titular Invincible for the reader to enjoy .

Simply said it's fresh , its funny and it's unique and it's one of the best thing out there that I have come across .

What I didn't Like :

The art I'm still not a big fan of , although I don't know what happened but towards the end of the volume the art seemed to improve and gain some consistency , specially in terms of background colours and facial features . I think maybe they changed the illustrator towards the end , not really sure.

Also I think Mark's mom character and his best friend's character weren't fleshed out or given enough page-time until this volume (ofcourse that all changes next volume , Oh i can't wait to talk about the next volume).

Overall

If you enjoy superhero comics but are tired of the stereotypes that these days Big Two (DC & Marvel) follow than you MUST read this , since while it delivers as a Superhero comics , it also makes fun of those stereotypes and the end result is a fresh , clever and unique comic book . A MUST BUY !

Apparently, the series is supposed to get better as it goes along. I'm not really sure if this one is an improvement over the first volume, but it definitely wasn't any worse.

Two volumes is enough to see where the show and the comic have started to diverge. Amber looks like she's a show only character. Since I'm not a fan of her and she seems completely unnecessary, I'll call that one of the shows few missteps. Cecil either hasn't been introduced in the comic yet or is another show only character. I'm kind of hoping he shows up because I do think that character adds to the story. (Spoiler:spoke too soon. They both show up in Vol. 3)

The comic story still has a rushed feel and seems to be more of an outline. On to volume 3.

Re-reading this years later gets me so excited for volume 3. Volume 2 is like the calm before the storm.

So we get a little bit more of Mark's life. How he's balancing being a teenager who just got his powers and his school life, and maybe even some of his love life? Yeah buddy, this is a coming of age story with lots of cool powers and fucked up twist. So if you haven't picked up on that yet you probably should.

The big moment in here is the "Justice League" wannabe team gets slaughtered. No bullshit "Who done it" because they show you it's none other than Mark's father! OH NO! But he's still playing the game of pretending he's hunting whoever did this. So you question what the hell is happening and what's his agenda.

If only you knew. I do know...cause I read this. But yeah.

So again another solid volume, and I remember enjoying this more and more the first time. I should too, cause this motherfucker bout to explode into greatness! A 3.5/5

Solid read with nice spins on standard teenage superhero tropes. I’m continuing to love the realistic feel of all the characters. For those who haven’t read this, there is a HUGE plot twist here which turns everything you thought you knew on its head, and what is even better about it is that it’s so unexpected.

Amazing! Audacious! This series built on a charming first volume into a sensation second.

I guess "Walking Dead" guy can write a decent superhero title, too, eh?

Score: 3.70 out of 5
Grade: 74% (B) | Allen the Alien

This is where the series starts to find its stride. We're introduced to Allen the Alien, very briefly meet the Guardians of the Globe, and start to see Omni-Man's true colours. The art is more expressive, the characters feel more developed, and there's a general sense of unpredictability with where the story might go next.

However, the show executed a lot of what was here better than the comic. For example, The Guardians of the Globe go down so quick here like a bunch of bums, but in the show they at least put up a fight - world's greatest superhero team my ass! There's also a few big moments that happen so fast that it doesn't quite give them time to breathe (Mark with Amber, Omni-Man's betrayal, the funeral afterwards, etc.). Good moments, but rushed.

Fun little nod to DC and a sign of things to come.

World: The art is solid, pretty much the same as the last arc, I like how grounded the art is for this book. The world building here was pretty fun, a nod to the Justice League and all the characters there (that’s Barda more than Wonder Woman which I like that nod). The pieces of Mark’s works is coming into place and the quirky additions that Kirkman makes to the superhero world are making me giggle.

Story: The heavy stuff is a sign of things to come and I like how we are getting to that soon. I also like the quiet moments that this book is made up of. Still al to of time out of the suit which is the best part of the book, I wish more superhero books focused more time on it like this book does. I love the vibe of Peter Parker I’m sensing here cause it makes for such a fun read and paired with the heavy stuff that happens here it makes it so much more jarring. A solid set up for things to come.

Characters: Mark is a fun character, so far he’s developing slowly and also pretty much a passenger to the big events coming along but that’s fine cause he’s a good point of view for the readers. The other characters are also solid and fit into superhero moulds and it allows for Kirkman to subvert expectations (it’s coming).

A solid second arc to build towards something big.

Onward to the next book!

More of the same as the last collection, as Kirkman expands the story and the world and delves more into Mark's (aka Invincible's) life. Some parts are somewhat compelling, such as the Guardians of the Globe and Teen Team storylines, and we even get cameos from other superheroes in the Image Universe -- fun to see Superpatriot and the Savage Dragon -- but artist Cory Walker was taking a lot of shortcuts in this one and obviously burned out (two pages of the same repeated panel of the main character asleep? I mean, c'mon. A total waste of paper.) and even the story had quite a bit of mundane filler, such as Mark and William visiting their intended college for a day, which comes across as a tad boring. I asked myself more than once as I was reading, "what does this add to the story?"

So, alas, two stars rather than three this time. Unless you are a Kirkman nut, I can't recommend this series AS OF NOW...however, I'm going to keep reading them because I have the first five volumes. Perhaps it will get better. Maybe with Ryan Ottley coming on as the new artist it will improve. I remain hopeful.

Enjoying these volumes so far. After watching the show I was expecting the big twist to happen sooner then later. It was interesting to see how the comics handles it. Definitely want to read more!

The comic starts using some proper humor in this volume. I'm starting to like Mike's mom Debbie because this time around she has a better presence and puts both her boys in place. Her husband is berated for forgetting Mark's birthday and Mark gets a slap on the wrist for bringing the newly-single-and-grieving Eve to his room. Gee, are they going to date now? Like, no way!

Dear old dad isn't sheltering his superpowered son in this one. Mark gets a mission to protect Earth while his father is away. The attacker is a Champion Evaluation Officer from the Coalition of Planets, but it turns out that he is on the wrong planet. And his name is Allen... Mike's success earns him some envy from his father who makes up for it by taking a day off from superheroing and dedicating it to super-speed whoopie with the missus.

Invincible is the best superhero comic book in the universe.

Unfortunately the second volume continues in much the same vein as the first. Everything here is an clear rip-off of established conventions, but Kirkman doesn't even attempt to use this for any kind of commentary, they are simply there for the reader to spot and for the occasional funny line. Throw in some random teen drama and a little bit of budding romance and your about done.

There are a few entertaining scenes (I loved super-powered catch with dad), and the beginnings of what could be a very interesting story-line but in general there just isn't enough going on here. I think I will put this on the back-burner for the time being.

Ruh-roh, Raggie! They decide to be edgy!
I love the first book in the series, but this is a letdown. Why? Deciding the feel-good charm needed undermining certainly doesn't help.
The first couple issue are still awesome, and the art compels throughout, but the brutal murders and twist at the 3/4 mark left a sour taste in my mouth. I realize that the brutality was meant to be jarring, but it felt unnecessary. The killings sans gore would have the same effect, but that wouldn't be hardcore enough, would it? I also think the big reveal would have been better if teased out, but they do a decent job of what they're going for there. I just don't like that direction.
This is fine, I guess, but was a serious disappointment after the great first volume. Still it gets three stars because of the art and the first half or so. As to whether I'll keep reading... Dunno.

V tomhle volumku Kirkman regulérně ukazuje prostředníček mainstream hrdinům a perfektně si z nich utahuje.

This volume had more interesting and compelling stories than the first one. Most notably it had “the scene.” If you watched the show, you know what scene. This series so far hasn’t hit the highs of the show yet, but I’m still having a really good time with it. I can’t wait to see how crazy and insane this comic gets.

Here it starts to take a turn. If you've managed to avoid any spoilers about this title up to this point, you're in for a treat. I implore you, don't do as I did and flip through the book ahead of time. Sit down, start at page one, and content yourself with flipping through panel by panel with no idea of how your life is about to change.

Volume 1 set the stage. It created a world with these characters and began establishing rules and relationships. This volume changes everything. The first major conflict arises and it is a DOOZY. It's the type of thing that makes you thankful the series became as successful as it did. Imagining Kirkman trying to wrap all of this up in 15-20 issues (they're now past issue 100) is unthinkable. Every new scene seems to unveil a new subplot that hasn't paid off yet, but you KNOW it will.

This is the first indication I had that I would be reading volume 14, ages from now, and flip back to volume 2 or 3 and say something like, "OH MY GOD, THAT'S WHY HE SAID THAT?!?!?!?!" You know you're putting in your initial investment, but you know that this is a sure thing.

Also, this was the period when they had to make the switch to artist Ryan Ottley due to some scheduling issues with Cory Walker. The change is subtle at most, and by the end of his second issue, I was thankful he came on board. Not to mention that the notes and "commentary" provided within gave some insight that without Ottley bringing the book back on schedule, it may not have survived as long and as well as it has.
