The Sisters, Texas #7

The Lilac Code

Rate this book
Named 2019 Best Women's Detective Fiction, Texas Association of Authors Will a case of mistaken identity be the death of her? Madison Reynolds is looking forward to a few days of rest and relaxation. Her best friend Genny is judging a celebrity bake-off near DC, so it’s the perfect opportunity for a girl’s getaway. With fun-loving Granny Bert in tow, the trio heads to the very heart of the Intel community. Deep in alphabet soup territory—surrounded by CIA, NSA, FBI and more—it takes only moments for things to go awry.

A mix-up at the airport leaves Madison with the wrong luggage, and a last-minute change in accommodations lands them at The Columbia Inn at Peralynna. How can they know its ties to the spy world will soon spin them into its web?

Designed as a CIA safe house, the inn has a fascinating history. When it seems a mysterious man in a dark coat is following her, Madison scoffs at her over-action imagination. She’s listened to too many spy tales, spun by the innkeeper herself. The stories of espionage and agents are intriguing, but too incredible to be real. The Texans know nothing about secret codes and counterintelligence. They’ve never heard of The Lilac Code, or the illusive agent-for-hire known simply as Kalypso.

Back home in The Sisters, a drama is unfolding that involves Madison’s precious twins. She’s raised them to do the right thing, no matter the consequence, but will their quest for justice put them in danger?

Thrust into impossible situations of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, the twins risk everything to save their school, while deep in spy territory, Madison and Genny race against the clock—and the elements—to save Granny Bert’s life.

The award-winning The Sisters, Texas Mystery Series continues in this exciting Book 7. This is a stand-alone book, but best when enjoyed as a full series experience.

Best-selling indie and hybrid author Becki Willis loves crafting stories with believable characters in believable situations. Many of her stories stem from her own personal experiences. (No worries; she's never actually murdered anyone).

When she’s not plotting danger and adventure for her imaginary friends, Becki enjoys reading, spending time with her family, unraveling a good mystery (real or imagined), dark chocolate, and a good cup of coffee.

A professed history geek, Becki often weaves pieces of the past into her novels. Family is a central theme in her stories and in her life. She and her husband enjoy traveling but believe coming home to their Texas ranch is the best part of any trip.

Becki has won numerous awards—including two Killer Nashville Silver Falchion Awards, InD’Tale’s coveted RONE, and been named Finalist for two Claymore Awards—but feels the real compliments come from her readers. Drop in for an e-visit anytime at beckiwillis.ccp@gmail.com, or www.beckiwillis.com.

Madison, Genny and Granny are all headed for a girl's outing near DC because Genny is judging a baking contest. But they don't get there, a mess up happens along the way and they end up at The Columbia Inn at Peralynna. Madison also ends up with the wrong luggage. This place is a haven for spies! Meanwhile back at The Sisters, the twins are having their own adventure by being at the wrong place at the wrong time. Can everyone get out of these snafus without too much problems? Not really, but it's fun to read about the adventures. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book from YourNewBooks.

A book that looked as if it would be a good espionage thriller turns out to be a Harlequin-type story written at an elementary level for young readers and designed for female readers. A simple, uncomplicated story, burdened by too many references to events that have occurred in the past and not explained here, the story was not particularly enjoyable nor was the author impressive.

4.5 STARS. I make no secret that most of the time, what most entices me to read a book is its cover. (Because of my cover snobbery, I have missed or delayed reading some great stories.) From the time THE LILAC CODE had its cover reveal last year, I wanted to read it. The cover evokes mystery and a little danger and has an air of creepy to it that drew me right in. Alas, as the seventh book in a series that I hadn’t started, I thought the love affair with THE LILAC CODE ended with the cover. (I mean, who doesn’t start a series with book one and read a series in order? Is this even allowed?)

As luck would have it, Ms. Willis opted to bring the whole dang series to Lone Star for a Reviewapalooza to celebrate book eight’s publication. Since I have some influence *cough* with the book blog tours, I ended-up being assigned THE LILAC CODE for my stop on the tour. I was required to break book law and jump-in without reading the prior six books. Sometimes we have to do the tough stuff in life.

In THE LILAC CODE, the mystery stands alone and we learn a lot about the characters and their lives to this point as the stories unfold. Yes, stories, plural, as there are two complete storylines happening in THE LILAC CODE: one outside of Washington DC, the other in The Sisters, Texas. Author Becky Willis does a great job at getting readers up-to-speed by bringing in prior books’ events and characters in an organic way. But be warned: learning about all the adventures and escapades also piques the reader’s interest in learning more, so if you plan on reading this one, clear your schedule to read seven more books (six prior, one after). Hmmm. Maybe it IS a big deal jumping in at book seven.

For those concerned about leaving Texas to spend time in DC, don’t. With a high interest secondary plot happening in The Sisters, readers get a taste of the small-town Texas vibe, the tightly-knit community, and the colorful characters. It’s enough to satisfy but also enough to make a reader yearn for more. Fortunately, in exchange for giving up some Texas time, what readers get is the very cool, and very real Columbia Inn at Peralynna, around which the mystery unfolds. Willis does an excellent job of casting the air of suspicion upon all aspects of the lodging and the people found there and does well in describing the myriad twists and turns contained within this place. (I’ve got to visit.) The “Note from the Author” at the end of the story gives more information about how this place came to be the setting of her book – and an interesting tidbit about the origin of one of the characters.

The book needs more proofreading to clean-up some SPAG errors, and at times, the characters veer into making political statements that may fit their viewpoints but don’t feel authentic and come off forced. However, those few shortcomings aren’t enough to negate the terrific tale that Becki Willis tells. Willis’s strengths are in writing believable dialogue and realistic characters to whom readers can relate. This story, and my guess is all of the books in the series, is character driven. At the end, it feels like you’ve spent time with good friends – and yeah, dodged some enemies.

Laced with intrigue, humor, and a dash of romance, I highly recommend THE LILAC CODE – and I don’t think I’m really going out on a limb to say the whole The Sisters, Texas series. Spending time within these pages was time happily spent, and I can’t wait to read book eight, WILDFLOWER WEDDING and THEN go back and start with book one, CHICKEN SCRATCH, moving forward from there.

Thank you to the author and Lone Star Book Blog Tours for providing me an eBook copy – which I didn’t read. Instead, I bought my own print copy (THAT COVER) to have and to hold and to read! No regrets. In exchange, I share my honest opinion – the only kind I give.

Chicken Scratch #1 - This is my first book by this author and I was greatly surprised at how well written, well thought out and laced with humor and intrigue; this little gem is packed. The area is near and dear to my heart since I was born in the area. The people, while not as easily identifiable as in a Jeff Abbott novel, are locals I know. The Texas speak is just as if Ms. Willis and I were at the Creamery (TAMU) sharing milk shakes and local gossip. The kinks and knots in the plot made it hard to put down the book, even to get a tea refill. You can't help but like the characters and root for them. The story, filled with life stories, is actually pretty substantial, not fluff, and Ms. W is an entertaining storyteller. 5*

When The Stars Fall #2 - This book is better than Chicken Scratch (#1), which is a good book, too. A lot of suspense, along with developing romances amongst several characters, keeps the reader immersed in this substantial story. Like the first book, the baddie is easily figured out, but the story is well worth reading. There are too many of the well rounded, well developed characters to shout out separately, but they're all interesting, funny, sincere and just plain folk. The Big House becomes a prominent character and helps the family with a huge change to their lives, maybe. Not a cliffhanger, but there's a tease about the future of Big and Madison. 5*

Stipulations and Complications #3 - This is a heavy, suspense filled book full of dark secrets and mysteries with the past and the present colliding and the darkness is felt by all involved. Yet, there's plenty of good and love along with the humor. This intriguing, substantial read is hard to put down with its interesting storylines and well thought out characters. This book is on the level with DeMille, Follette, Grisham and Ludlum. 5*

Home Again: Starting Over #4 - Amen Sister to that comment about Texans and wannabes! This series must be read in order; they keep getting better and better. I love the fact that what happens in the earlier books are just slightly mentioned, instead of being retold. All the characters keep growing and their past and secrets coming to light as the books go on. Multiple storylines in this book and the twists and surprises just keep the reader glued to the pages. I've chain read the first four books and don't have the next two available to me. But I'm diving into book seven, the newly released The Lilac Code. 5*

The Lilac Code #7 - Trouble even finds them outside of Texas! I missed the two books before this one, but it was still an interesting read. I was disappointed with the ending - the gun in her hand was forgotten. But the pages were full of intrigue and suspense, and the characters were intense. Again, there were multiple stories occurring, along with the main story. Current events were featured, which isn't surprising with all that's happened in Texas and other U.S. locations in the past year alone. While not a cliffhanger, there's definitely more books in the future. I chain read five books in three days and never once was bored with this series. 5*

I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I was not financially compensated, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.

First of all, I absolutely adore cozy mysteries. There is nothing better than curling up with a book that doesn't have gratuitous violence, an abundance of profanity, or detailed bedroom scenes. And I am happy to report that there is nothing offensive in this book (an occasional "ass" and reference to male strippers and sex within the confines of marriage). In fact, I don't believe I have read such a clean cozy in ages, and I found myself quite pleased by that. Additionally, there are a few references to God and church which is something I'm not used to in a cozy mystery. I found that a very nice touch.

While this was my first venture into this series, I didn't feel too out of the loop because the author did an excellent job of "catching me up" on what had happened in previous books. I will say, however, that although I was delighted with the characters, I felt that I needed to go and read the other books in the series because I wanted to understand them. That is absolutely no reflection on the author; I would personally enjoy reading the books in order, and I recommend readers do that instead of jumping into book 7.

Although I genuinely enjoyed the mystery, I didn't find myself as invested in the story as I sometimes am with cozy mysteries. There was no murder, but there was intrigue and danger. The book was a quick read, but I think I would have preferred a bit more detail and plot twists at times. That is honestly the only reason I gave the book a four-star rating. I do prefer more action in my mysteries, but for a cozy mystery, I would give this one a pretty strong recommendation.

In truth, my favorite thing about this book was the characters. They are well-developed, quirky, and fun. It certainly made me want to drop everything and discover the characters from the beginning.

The Lilac Code: The Sisters, Texas Mystery Series Book 7 is by Becki Willis. This seventh book is just as good as book one in the series. The characters are very realistic and the plot is quite diverse. In fact, you have two different plots going on at the same time. You don’t want to put the book down.
Meredith Reynolds, Genesis Baker, and Granny Bert are headed out for a Girls’ Weekend. Genesis is to be a judge at a cooking contest so Meredith and Granny Bert go along to create a Bachelorette Weekend for Genesis, although Granny Bert’s definition of a Bachelorette Weekend is not the same as Meredith and Genesis have in mind. However, Granny Bert supplies a much-needed humorous impact to the story.
From the beginning, Meredith has the feeling that this weekend is not going to end up like they think. Meredith has a “bad feeling” about the trip. First, they find themselves in a traffic jam on the way to the airport. This could easily make them miss their flight. Once on the flight, they are separated and not seated together, they find out their hotel had burned down and they need to find a new place to stay, and finally, someone switches suitcases with Meredith. This is just the beginning.
Meanwhile, at home, Meredith’s employee asks Bethani, her daughter, to help with a new case taken on by In a Pinch. She pulls in her brother and her soon-to-be step-sister, Megan, into the case. They are to find out information on Tasha, a girl whose father is concerned about her involvement in her new group of friends.
Sheriff de Cordova, Meredith’s fiancé, is working an arson case with Cutter Montgomery. Genesis’s fiancé. Cutter believes this arsonist is going to escalate his activities not only in frequency but in severity and in the number of people involved.
. These portions of the plot make the read quite worthwhile. Becki manages to meld them all together

Genny’s stellar cooking skills land her a gig judging a national cooking competition, miles from home. With Maddy’s wedding to Brash and Genny’s wedding to Cutter coming up in weeks, there isn’t a better excuse for a girl’s trip! Of course, Grandma Bert tags along adding laughs and denying her own engagement enough for it to be a possibility!

Since these women carry their fun and luck with them, the trip’s eventful before they arrive. Yep, their hotel burns to the ground but they find a room at a converted safe house where the alphabet agencies are having a high-level party and one agency’s looking for a mysterious and notorious female operative.

But there’s more… Bert’s implied she has a serious condition that needs incredible and immediate medical care and meets a guy or two; Jenny’s latest admirer slinks around to get peeks at her and; Maddy’s luggage is missing and the airline doesn’t care but she’s got a nifty suitcase full of odds and ends like someone’s work related paperwork.

At home Brash and Cutter do their women proud as the trial family run and the surprise are going well, so well that the tens get involved when Brash, Cutter and Derron get to work on a couple of ‘typical in The Sisters’ insipid seemingly unrelated cases with helpings of mystery and mayhem.

Never Ending Action ....

As if Maddy want always getting into troubled waters all the time, now her twins Beth and Blake, wind up in a tizzy pig their own and somehow get their neat and dear son to be step sister Megan involved. Chicken coop danger, strangled addresses, meth labs, Big house remodel along with dead bodies and skeletons and now get kids wind up involved with a thickening plot of their own wth a group of kids that has been thrown to the wolves and is now wreaking havoc on the Sisters Cities. I can't believe that Granny Bert got taken and tied up and guess and dynamite and everyone at different times almost getting murdered or blown up. But in the end, Genny and Cutter have a tear jerker of a wedding and a reception at the renovated big home (house) .... And rude happily into the sunset while Maddy it's being held art gunpoint and then being .... Oh ... Just read the book. I like how the twins and kids were woven into the fabric of the series. The Difference it added to the story was remarkable and added a whole new dimension to the series. It was nice to finally see The parents and adults as exactly just that (parents) for a while. The characters and the situations are real life and that's what adds to the momentum.

Maddy and Genny and Granny travel to Washington DC area for a cooking show judging/ prewedding girl's trip and encounter lots of surprises. Brash, Blake, Bethany and Megan and Cutter find lots to do in the Sisters area with arson and threats of new activities by a disgruntled group of teens. And last but certainly not least, the long-awaited wedding of Genny and Cutter takes places after lots of mishaps and small calamities. This is a book of thrills, adventure, threats, luck, romance, and the solving of many different mysteries(and there are some really nicely worded tips on good parenting) This is one of the best of the 7 books in the series- but a lot of action occurs outside of the Sisters and the hometown area featured in the series.

I will admit, when I first started this book in the Sisters, Texas Mystery series, I wasn't sure how I was going to like it. For most of it, the story wasn't set in my beloved Texas - one of the things I really like about this series. But I figured it must be a challenge to keep a story line fresh and entertaining, especially in a series. But Becki Willis does it time and time again, and I should never have doubted that she would deliver an entertaining and action-packed story! Every book in this series feels like magical time spent with amazing friends.

this is a page turner of a story, I could notput the book down till I finished. if you have read any of her other books in the series you have to read this one. what could have when Maddy , Genny, and Granny go on a trip, love the place they stayed at. Brash is taking care of the twins and his daughter while they are gone. the twins even get to investigate when asked to check out the daughter of a client for in a pinch. if you like suspense and romance you have to read the book I was given a copy of the book but this is an honest review.

As usual, Becki Willis nailed this one! Assuming you already know the characters, Genny has been invited to judge a baking contest in DC. She asks Maddie and Granny Bert to go along with her and make it a "bachlorette" weekend before her wedding. When Maddie's suitcase gets switched at the airport, the trio doesn't realize the danger they're in. Then upon discovering their hotel has burned, they opt to stay at a B&B recommended by a stranger on the plane - which just happens to be a former CIA safe house. I'll not give it away, but trust me when I say "don't miss this story!"

I really enjoyed this book. It’s a great addition to the series but enough backstory is given to ensure that each book in the series can be read as a stand-alone book.

When Maddie, Gen, and grandma Bert decide to combine Gen judging a pastry baking competition with a girls weekend/bachelorette party they never dreamed it would involve lost suitcases, coded messages or kidnapping. Back home they’re dealing with a new case for Maddie’s business, In a Pinch, and teenage arsonists.

Madison, Ginny and Granny, a trip to spend a few days together before Ginny’s wedding. She is judging a celebrity bake off, and a bachelorette party for her, as well as her having a bad feeling about going. From the start of getting to the airport, seats, luggage mix up, to even hotel burning down they were to stay in. Turned out to be an adventure, and them having no clue of what was going on. The characters were great. A delightful story to read of mishaps.

Over the top spy story

This one is a little over the top. You have Maddy, Genny and Granny Bert in Maryland getting involved with spies. You have the twins and Megan getting involved with a gang that likes arson. It's exciting but you have to suspend reality, big time. The end is great with Genny and Cutter's wedding but then another little twist for Maddy that I thought was a little much. Loved Granny Bert's sassy attitude.

Funny light thriller

I liked the Granny character. Story started slow giving the feeling of drama more than a mystery thriller.
I think the author could have done a lot with the mysterious spy hotel and the characters but it didn't go as expected.
This book basically has 2 stories running in parallel - one involving adults and the other involving teenagers.
Easy to read if you are looking for a funny and light thriller plus drama genre.

Spies, fires, and a wedding!

There’s much going on in this book, but—for once—there’s no dead body. Brash is staying with Blake, Bethani, and Megan while Maddy, Genny and Granny Bert take a trip for Genny to judge a cooking contest. At home, Brash and Cutter are trying to solve arson cases, while Bethani tries her hand at becoming a detective. And Maddy finds herself involved in espionage. So, yes, there’s lots of action, kids becoming detectives, and other scary things. Best read as part of the series.

B & B Save the Day!

A book different from the others. Taking the three ladies out of Texas made a great storyline. Back home the twins and Meagan, along with Brash and Cutter are very busy trying to save a lot of lives. Great stories. Just could have done without the MAGA preaching from Granny Bert. Not all Texans are red. Some of us prefer purple (mix red & blue to make purple).

More twists and turns than an amusement park ride!

Taking the three musketeers out of their Texas comfort zone added interest to the tale, while introducing us to a delightful real life destination to visit. Blake, Bethani and Megan evolved as strong positive characters while dealing with their own side story.
Definitely a winner, and Congrats to Cutter and Genny!

Fantastic story

A trip to the DC area becomes more than expected for Maddy, Genny and Granny Bert. What should be a girl's weekend instead becomes a fight for survival when the ladies become entangled with spies. Meanwhile at home the twins and Megan are involuntarily involved in solving mysterious cases of arson.

When I started this book, I was not sure I was going to like this story line as it started off in an unfamiliar direction. but as I continued to read, the mysteries and characters cam to life and started to make sense. oMG...what a story, and it does not slow down until the ending of the book. Great book... I loved it. Another one day read!!!

Seven books and counting

These stories are delightful and fun pictures of rural current day life that could happen. The characters are people you might know. The stories are fun reads and you can't wait to see what will happen. I will read all in this series and anything else the author has written or will write.

Maybe the best of the series, so far, but I can't wait for Brash and Maddy's wedding. All the characters are wonderful and the home-town flavor puts the icing on the cake. The intrigue is just enough to get the reader thinking and with a dash of "fun" added in, it's a "can't miss" series.
