Neverlight is the third collection by Dan Weatherer that I have had had the pleasure of reading. As with his other books there is a mixture of short stories and flash fiction, and both types are of a very high standard. The thing with Weatherer's story telling is that his voice and his stories are timeless, in such a way that some feel modern and some have the feel and style of the likes of Lovecraft. There is horror here (Incubation, My First Horror Story) but there is humour too (A Butcher's Wife Indisposed).

All in all, this is a worthy addition to the authors' work and yet another example that Dan Weatherer is a name to look out for

My first short story collection

And I'm super glad it was by this very talented author. Dan Weatherer knows how to tell as great story. Weather it's a paragraph long, or a few pages long. This collection with have you on a roller coaster of emotions. You may laugh, cry, or you may even jump outta your skin. My favorite story was THE RAVEN AND THE WOLF. Read this! Tell me which one is your favorite. Thank you Dan, for the amazing ride.

This is a collection of short stories and verse, the third collection from Dan’s pen (check out Only the Good Burn Bright and The Soul That Screamed), and serves to put a spotlight on a storyteller of talent and range.

The collection opens with the tale, “Abarath“, a chilling, Lovecraftian tale about two friends discovering the truth behind a rumoured treasure; it’s atmospheric and builds menace and tension steadily.

The next tale, “Signed” is my pick for the most entertaining, since it focuses on a struggling Horror writer and the lengths he goes to to get an agent; it’s also a wonderful, satirical look at struggling authors and successful authors and I’m sure many writers will catch themselves enjoying it for all the wrong, yet spot-on, reasons.

I have never really been the biggest of fans of short stories, but that being said I do seem to enjoy horror ones more than most other genres.

The collection of tales under the title Neverlight, judging from the cover and the blurb made me feel as though I was going to be stumbling into some Lovecraftian/Clive Barker type hellhole. For me at least, I felt that I was more than a little misled. This is not necessarily a bad thing, as instead of the over the top gore/monster feel, this struck me more of the M R James or Lawrence Gordon Clark; something a lot subtler. The kind of tale that seems quite light when you are reading it, but then sticks with you afterwards, coiling around your memory, and growing over time until it almost haunts you.

Weatherer does have a talent for the tales that he is telling. I quite often find that I want to give up after a short story, but here I wanted to carry on. It was probably made easier by the fact that there were no longer stories, rather short, concise tales that tell the stories with no needless baggage.

These are interspersed with pieces of flash fiction, the hit and run side of writing. Very few words coupled to tell a story that can be very effective.

Not one of the stories stopped me in my tracks, all of them working and keeping me reading in their own right.

I'm not usually a fan of horror and dark fiction but this interesting collection from Dan Weatherer is wide-ranging enough in style and content to have something for everyone - myself included - from the Gothic and gory to wickedly dark comedy, poetry and even something movingly redemptive ('The Withered Touch').

I've held back on giving a five star review as a couple of tales felt slightly rushed; 'The Watchful Eye', particularly, felt as if it had the makings of longer tale. I look forward to Dan's forthcoming novel and seeing how he develops as a writer with more time and space in which to develop his characters and descriptive prose.

The more I read the more I want.
A diverse collection of fabulous dark mind blowing words. Each story is totally different, each has a chilling tale that has totally spooked me. And then there's Agnes, oh how I love Agnes "The Butchers Wife" I first met her in the Soul That Screamed & she is one sneaky devious devil. These are all brilliantly written dark stories. I'm hooked on Mr Weatherer's words. Thank you.

Gothic Horror for the 21st century

A fabulous collection of stories, I especially enjoyed "Signed," "The Raven and the Wolf," and "That Laughing Man." Dark imaginings of our British culture and 'the old ways.' It made me smile, it made me chuckle, and it made me think about what we hide in plain sight in our daily lives.
