I am kaer fatuk, storyteller for my people. I
carry their stories like heavy stones, forgetting nothing.
During the long night of the garuda I buried many stones
at the base of hama trees where the buttress roots plunge into the earth.
In danger, I would become a hama tree myself,
my long thick hair twisting into queues,
seeking the sacred protection of my land.
Now the sun has risen, Timor Lorosa’e, land of my ancestors,
so I have dug up the stones.
This is your story and mine.
