Children are able to communicate by signing before they develop the skills necessary for speech. By teaching simple sign language to children from as young as eight months, we can help them to convey their emotions and their needs. When children begin to talk, having sign language to fall back on provides a comforting safety net. Add to the fun of signing by singing well-known nursery rhymes and songs. Even proficient speakers will long enjoy signing to a favourite song or rhyme. Simple and clear signing instructions allow anyone to join in.
We began our "Spider-tastic!" story time (inspired by Charlotte's Web)with this finger-play song. At the end of story time we made popsicle stick puppets of the sun, a raincloud, and a spider for the children to take home.

This book teaches children basic signs to an old but popular nursery rhyme- "The Itsy Bitsy Spider". The board book is large and the illustrations take up most of the pages. This is because each page shows a baby signing part of the song. The illustrations need to be large so that the sign is clear. At the end the book runs though the song one more time with all of the babies on the same two pages. This book is very cute, sweet and fun. Learning signs to a song not only helps children remember it, it also improves their motor skills and makes the task more enjoyable. The signs in the book are accurate but I think that they should have a little bit more of a description in case the reader does not understand the arrows or marks that are meant to show motion.
Very sweet and cute rendition of the popular kid's song, with the added bonus of sign language that goes well with the itsy bitsy spider's journey up the water spout. Lots of fun for aged 2-6. Four stars Itsy Bitsy Spider rises again!
Itsy Bitsy Spider teaches simple sign language to babies and toddlers to the classic nursery rhyme song of the same name. The charming illustrations show smiling ethnically diverse children demonstrating each American Sign Language sign accompanied by the song’s lyrics. The end of the book illustrates all the signs and lyrics on the final two-page spread to demonstrate the entire song and movements put together. Babies and toddlers will enjoy doing the simple movements while singing along to this classic and loved nursery rhyme. This would be a good baby and toddler participatory storytime book to encourage phonological awareness through song, and build fine and gross motor skills through signing and movement.
Thanks to my obsession with Sue Thomas F.B. Eye I have wanted to learn some basic signs...so I ordered this series. I really like the simple illustrations and clear written instructions of the sings. Good for me a beginner and good for babies!
3. This is a single book that is a part of a series of books that take common songs and use sign language to teach the song. Each page has one line of the song along with an illustration of a child simultaneously singing and signing too.
4. Annie Kubler is a great author of books that link singing with sign language. The illustrations are detailed and easy for kids to understand and mimic the hand gestures. This book could also be read without using the sign language aspect.
