Carol James Marshall is an author who specializes in horror stories, combining comedy, paranormal, sci-fi and suspenseful elements. She has 7 books and 4 short stories already out in the world and is currently working on Santa Muerte, a Latino-influenced series about witches that will be released in 2023. Marshall is a low vision author who uses technology and large fonts to write her books. When she isn't writing or enjoying audiobooks, Carol works as a translator. With her background in both Los Angeles, California and Mexicali, Mexico, she now lives in Georgia along with her husband and two children.
Lizbeth and her twin girls take a break from their busy life to help her Lizbeth’s parents settle into their new home, a cabin in the woods of Georgia. It didn’t take long for Lizbeth to find her mother muttering by the window. This annoyed her, as her mother was always worried about one thing or another and telling tales of things that would never happen. However, this time, Lizbeth and her girls experience the little, mischievous men of her mother’s tale.
There were so many things I loved about this story, first and foremost, Lizbeth’s family who were perfectly imperfect. As a believer that all families have their quirky tendencies, I loved how Ms. Marshall wove this part of Lizbeth’s family into the story. The “Troublemakers” were whimsical, mischievous, annoying, and disgusting, all at the same time, and I enjoyed reading how the family took care of them.
Troublemakers by Carol James Marshall is a very short story about, what else, Troublemakers! Perfect for St. Patrick's Day or any other time. Helping her parents move into a cabin in the woods along with her twins and her brother, she finds her mother fretting about something. Not unusual as her mother has something worrying her at all times. What is it this time! Leprechauns - the troublemakers! Oh sure! What fantasy is next?
No spoilers here, you've got to read this short, short story for yourself. I give it 5 stars!
Never ignore someone who can see the Little People - whichever country they are in or wherever they come from. And if you can't cope with their antics, leave ... This was a quick, fun, wee bit dark, escapist lark. I enjoyed it and read it in one sitting. Laughed a bit, enjoyed the leprechauns' malarkey and dialogue. I would have liked more revelations about the troublemakers and the twin daughters ... will they be troublemakers themselves? Intimations of their talents suggest they might ... I received a free e-copy of this book in return for an honest review.
