Holly Webb is one of Britain's best-loved children's writers. She has written over a hundred books for children, and her work has been translated into over thirty languages. Holly lives in Tilehurst, just outside of Reading, Berkshire, with her husband, three children and several cats.
Zoe has always longed for a dog of her own, but realizes that her home may not be ideal for a lively dog. Lucky for her, her Aunt Jo works at an animal recue and allows Zoe to help care for the animals. When three abandoned puppies are found on the doorstep, Zoe's compassionate nature makes her the ideal helper to nurse these tiny pups back to health. She soon forms a special connection with the smallest puppy, Cookie, but she must overcome her jealousy and allow Cookie to find a loving home with someone else.
A sad start to this tale, but the loving comfort and care given to the abandoned puppies brings about a happy ending. A heartening reminder of the kindhearted who are always ready and willing to love and nurture those who need it the most.
So, we really liked The Mystery Kitten, and I assumed that my pet loving kid would be just as into this one, but it wasn't as intriguing. The puppies are left at an animal shelter, where Zoe is helping her Aunt out. She bonds with one of the puppies, but is having a hard time accepting their inevitable move to a permanent home - one she's sure won't be hers as her sister doesn't like dogs and her mom thinks they don't have time for one.
Zoe's angst about not getting to keep the pup is pretty all consuming and it really spoils most of the middle of the book. I think that's why we ultimately didn't enjoy it as much. Overall, not bad, but not great. Everything does work out in the end.
Rather a disappointment. My daughter was excited about this book because we have a puppy named Cookie. However, she found it difficult to understand and empathize with the main character in the book. I often find these books rather silly but usually my animal-loving daughter enjoys them.
Zoe’s aunt works at an animal shelter, and Zoe gets to help! One day upon arrival at the shelter, Zoe and her Aunt find a box of abandoned puppies. They are cold and starving and lonely, but Luckily, Zoe is there to help. But when she falls in love with the littlest puppy, Cookie, Zoe doesn’t know if she can say goodbye when Cookie gets adopted. Cute story! Recommend for dog lovers like Zoe.
