Suimei finally has his base set up, new housemate and all, and is primed to devote himself to his research in trying to find a way back home. But things are never that simple for our hard-luck anti-hero from another world. There’s still a shadow on the loose in the city and an unfinished duel with a real hero to settle, but to make matters worse, someone new seems to have taken an interest in Suimei and his affairs. Meanwhile, Reiji and the others continue their own quest to save the world, which may take an unexpected turn.
Solid volume, though again, warning that it has no black and white drawings in it. This volume wraps up the previous Liliana focused arc (Felmenia is on the cover, but she probably features about as evenly as all the other girls involved). It's good to see the whole cast of characters really get involved with each other again, though you wonder how long Suimei can keep his identity secret to Reiji and co and the world at large when some major important folks know he's a magician (particularly Graziella, who is kind of a villain for this volume).
We get the answer to the mystery of who the tall dark shadowy figure was in the coma incidents. If it wasn't already obvious (we only have so many tall male characters) it becomes it here. Rogue's character also gets a bit more developed. It will be curious to see what they do with him going forward (he's kind of a problem character, a bit weak willed and too quick to take action; I wouldn't be surprised if he perishes in a later volume).
Not as many jokes in this volume. There's a sweet heart to heart scene between Mizuki and Suimei (solid friendship forged with.. shoes!). Show of arrogance and comebacks are really more the emotional rah rah type scenes in this one.
One fault with this series is Suimei's resolve to avoid danger fading as the series goes. He has jumps into at least one nearly unwinnable battle this volume. They kind of poke fun at this as a character traits of his, that his actions and his thoughts / attitude don't always align. I guess you just gotta accept that that's the answer for it, that he's just hypocritical and not that the plot needs him to jump into danger.
Some characters that seem totally innocuous and fun in volume 3 become much more intriguing in volume 4 and will probably prove to be moreso in volume 5. I feel like we have a pretty good set of characters now, and I'm really curious how romance will play out later too. The author continues to feel the need to do these "house" type scenes to develop some of the cast. Again, wait and see with those (please no more perv / Loli-con jokes).
The magicka principles and explanations kind of go over my head as much as Felmenia's. The whole magic melt / entropy stuff I get but I don't. Even some of the terminology gets bizarre, and luckily Felmenia points this out to us. The major plot twist that involved language I did not see coming, but I did find neat (and astute readers of volume 3+4 will probably pick up on it more, and it makes the discovery of the culprit seem like less of a "your the only character it could be" plot asspull).
Overall, good volume. It leaves a lot of intrigue at the end, so I think people will want to get the next one (though it's less of a cliff hanger ending than 3).
This volume finished what we started in the third volume. We get to see a different side to many of the different characters. For example the second hero when we met him in the last volume he was total douchebag. However, now I am actually starting to like him. I like his interactions with the MC. Can't wait to start the next.
