It is 17th century France, the age of discovery and scientific revolution. Sulvain, a mysterious traveler, is absorbed in the Parisian academic scene. Through his friendship with the renowned Christiaan Huygens, Sulvain has the chance to study the latest discoveries of the distant cosmos. Deep in the library of Academy of Sciences, however, our traveler will meet Huygen's apprentice--Raziol Quamar--who will truly spark new lights in Sulvain's universe.
A historical fantasy romance between a necromancer and an astronomy apprentice in 17th century France ... beautiful art and an intriguing start with this first episode. Raziol is beautiful the way he blushes so lovely. We don't learn much here yet, the plot is rather sparse in this first part, but definitely piques my curiosity. Who is Sulvain????????
This is one of the most pure things I've ever read.
Novae follows Raziol- a Turk astronomer's apprentice in 17th century France. When a strange traveler named Sulvain shows up to the Academy of Sciences, though, Raziol's studies are taken for a turn. Sulvain has got a few secrets to keep, but Raziol is determined to uncover them all.
This webcomic is so calming; the beautiful art style and soft characters make for a wonderful reading experience. I ended up staying awake through the late hours of night in order to finish, as this was too hard to put down.
I loved the mute representation through Sulvain's character! I found it so sweet how he'd trace his finger over people's hand to communicate. The bond he shares with Raziol is amazing, and I'm so eager to uncover more about their pasts.
This was an incredibly well done webtoon! I'd recommend it to everyone in need of a soft, beautiful story.
A cute and funny start to a historical romance between a mute necromancer Sulvain and a Turk astronomer Raziol. The art is really pretty though in my opinion a bit more detail would suit the story better.
NEED to bring attention to this fantastic WEBCOMIC that has now taken over my life, its a Queer historical fantasy romance between a necromancer and astronomy apprentice in 17th century France...its so soft, wholesome, and comforting. Please read it. The aesthetics and art are detailed, the color palette is fantastic too. There's mystery, magic, romance, so many soft moments between Raziol and Sulvain. The worldbuilding and magic are so cleverly developed... the world and wonderful characters come to life with each page! Almost caught up to the latest chapter, you can read this all in 1 sitting its THAT good! (~˘▾˘)~ NOVAE by Kaiju Full Review 💜✨
*Update (Nov. 2020): Finished the latest chapter around August and I've been meaning to keep on reading to the newest pages, because this webcomic AMAZING and easily one of my new favorites! Full review is now on my blog! 💕
Beautiful mm/historical/paranormal webcomic, both the story and the art is well developed. The color palette matches the moods, and the characters are well rounded. This comic doesn't communicate through words as much as it does their motions and facial expressions, which somehow made it more emotional for the audience as you watch the two main characters interact. Can't wait to see what happens, because I cannot guess.
First, this is a period piece; it’s set in France in the mid-to-late seventeenth century (1670s to be more exact). Second, this is a graphic novel; there is a lot that is communicated visually rather than verbally. I chose this title largely because the art was just so compellingly lush, I wanted to know more about what the authors, a team called KaiJu, had envisioned. It turns out that Novae works well as a new-to-me author for Joyfully Jay’s Reading Challenge Month as part of New-to-Author Week. In fact, works by multiple authors are interesting because I wonder if one author writes one character and the other writes another—or, especially in a graphic novel, one person is responsible for the lion’s share of what happens where the other would be in charge of illustration. I am not sure what (if) the duties are divided for Novae, but it’s something that I think about with multiple authors.
On to the content of the graphic novel…summarizing the action is actually a bit wonky. This is due to the fact that, well, not much happens in the first 190-odd pages of part 1. Not that anything in the novel disappoints, rather the reader is carefully and thoroughly introduced into the world in which Raziol lives: a French university during the 17th century. KaiJu also showcase the teacher/pupil relationship between Raziol and Huygens’ and it is charming. Raziol’s earnestness regarding his studies really shines and Huygens is the jovial, benevolent benefactor. While I am not sure how realistic this dynamic is, I enjoyed it all the more for Raziol having at least one genuinely happy relationship. Raziol’s classmates are rather more vicious and while Raziol seems to be either aloof to their cruel tricks or resigned to them, it’s clear Raziol is the odd-man out and not because he is academically superior to the others. I cannot say there is overt racism depicted, but I get the idea that the classmates are acting out of narrow mindedness.
I'm reading this online via it's webcomic format, and I absolutely love it. I'm currently pretty nervous about webcomics in general (they tend to get me excited about them and then suddenly stop), but this is one of the webcomics I'm rooting for.
It took me extra time to read this because I was pretty busy admiring the beautiful artwork. It is aesthetically pleasing and OMG I already love the main characters. Those cute blushing baby boys are so ahsjskaksjs I just want to hold them and protect them.
I've been reading this online for quite a while and noticed it on GR, so I thought I'd take a moment and say that I love it. The artwork is absolutely gorgeous and the story is very intriguing. It's building slowly and I wonder what's going to happen. The budding romance is so lovely and very sweet. I love Sulvain and Raziol together.
Nie jestem w stanie opisać jak uwielbiam ten komiks. Słowo które najlepiej go definiuje to piękny.
This is a gorgeously drawn and gorgeously plotted story. I am definitely in love. The art style is my favourite thing! I really want to buy a physical copy. So worth the read. A big bravo to the artists because I can look at the panels all day. Beautiful. (I’ve read all the chapters that are up on webtoon.)
