Beware The Boogerman

Rate this book
A town full of monsters, a killer on the loose, and a sheriff determined to save his town from the horror lurking in the woods.

Let me paint you a picture of Prattville: It's basically Florida for monsters. A quaint little retirement community where vampires complain about their HOA fees, werewolves host book clubs, and goblins run the local farmer's market. They literally call it "Monster Town," because apparently nobody in municipal planning owns a thesaurus.

Enter Sheriff John and his daughter, Deputy Debbie—or "Dinkie" if you've got a death wish and excellent health insurance. These two have the world's worst job description: keeping the peace between humans and the kind of residents who used to star in your childhood nightmares. Debbie's fresh off an Army tour as an MP, which means she's traded dealing with drunk soldiers for managing intoxicated vampires. Lateral move, really.

Everything's going swimmingly in this supernatural Mayberry until sweet, cantankerous Clara Jensen—yes, she was both sweet AND cantankerous, it's called range—gets murdered so spectacularly that even the monsters are like, "Whoa, too much." We're talking a crime scene that would make True Detective go, "Maybe dial it back a bit."

And here's the kicker: the killer kept her head. As a trophy. Because apparently just murdering people is so 2024.

But Clara's just the appetizer. This psychopath isn't hunting humans—it's hunting the monsters. Vampires are getting decimated. Goblins are getting shredded like discount cheese. Two trolls are in the ICU, and if you've ever tried to hurt a troll, you know that's like successfully punching a mountain.

Now our heroes have to answer the ultimate question: How do you fight the thing that makes monsters wet their monster pants? What exactly scares the bejeezus out of a werewolf? What gives vampires nightmares? (Besides garlic bread shortages and stake sales at Home Depot.)

To make matters worse, Debbie's best friend has gone missing—again—because apparently this friend treats disappearing like a hobby. And the past is coming back to haunt them, which in a town full of actual ghosts, really says something.

Beware The Boogerman is what happens when Hot Fuzz meets What We Do in the Shadows, gets drunk, and wakes up next to Dean Koontz. It's paranormal horror that asks the important questions: Can a small-town sheriff save his monster constituency? Will Deputy "Don't Call Me Dinkie" Debbie find her chronically disappearing friend? And seriously, what kind of résumé do you need to become the official Monster Town sheriff?

One thing's for sure: In Prattville, "protect and serve" takes on a whole new meaning. And yes, they probably have the worst Yelp reviews in America.

If you love small-town horror with a dark twist, this is the book for you. Grab your copy of Beware The Boogerman today and prepare for the nightmare that awaits.

Never, in the history of the world, had monsters ever been so afraid of another monster.

D Glenn Casey's "Beware The Boogerman (A Cold Shivers Nightmare Book 1)" is yet another one of those books that I seem to be drawn to in 2025 where I really enjoy both the story and the characters tremendously, but am left frustrated because editing is so outright terrible. And I really can't think of a way to put that more kindly than that because it really does seem almost like it hasn't been checked at all. I can't tell you how much that disappoints me.

It’s bad, daddy. It’s really bad.

But looking at the positive first, "Boogerman" as it shall henceforth be abbreviated (noting that "most towns would have called this monster the Boogieman, but the little kids mispronounced its name and it stuck"… now there's a new thing that you know!) basically described the town that I wish I grew up in. Prattville, Nebraska is obviously an everytown like you'd expect to find right in the heart of the good ol' USA as Casey tells us. Unlike a lot of the places on the East Coast, towns haven't essentially merged with uncontrolled urban sprawl and their nearest neighbors still require a lengthy drive in order to stop by and say "hi". And what makes Prattville, or Prattvile as some of the kids call it (those darn kids!) so special is that its other nickname - Monster Town - can be taken extremely literally. Yes, Virginia: "Monsters do exist and they live here in Prattville."

I’m a damn werewolf and the thought of what might be coming our way scares the hell out of me.

For it seems that in this bucolic town with its 4-person sheriff's department, small shops, and friendly neighbors is packed to the gills - even possibly literally - with what most humans would call monsters. But everyone just loves Milly Oswald, the wee, four and half foot tall old lady who makes the best pumpkin muffins you ever tasted … who can also turn into a seven foot tall vampire with an eight foot wingspan. Why she and fully human husband Terry are just the nicest folks you'd ever hope to meet. Heck, even the locals Kelly (the night nurse at the hospital) and her brothers Randy and Jake were just the best folks, despite when needed turning into the ugliest, meanest looking green and hairy ogres you could imagine.

She was about to die and she knew it.

And I could go on about the werewolves, goblins, hell hounds, and more but I think I've made my point about just how wonderful living in such a "village" could be… because as everyone knew growing up (right???) monsters are our friends! By the way, I was going to be the resident Mad Scientist, which I even wrote in one of those "life journals" my mom bought (you know where they put weird things from the hospital and dentist in there… but only if you're the first child…). Instead I chose chemistry… and watched it get outsourced to China. Bet they never did that to a werewolf. Go figure.

You want to take a hell hound home, like he's some stray puppy?

But sure, the sheriff's department is still well-needed, too, and are there to make sure that things stay copacetic especially when the full moon shines. Heck, when you've got a clever wiener dog that turns into a ginormous über hell hound on occasion AND has learned how to get out of his enclosure, well, you need folks on hand who can help. Also making sure that any would-be monster hunters are hustled out of town pronto is a big help. So yeah, Sheriff John (aka Dad) and his deputies Debbie (aka Daughter) and Cal (one of the most normal guys in the whole book!) do a fine job, especially as they've got all the Men In Black quality weapons one might need to qualm any domestic disputes or run away poodles from hell. Funny then how they're later accompanied during the climax of the book by Agent Smith from Homeland Security… whose name just happens to indeed be Agent Smith. No worries: there's no rapping or dancing included.

Your so-called US Army will be nothing more than meat puppets.

So all-in-all, story-wise I really enjoyed the book. OK granted the "big reveal" about the bad guy wound up being a bit lamer than I expected but hey, with the amount of beasties the author was juggling, it wasn't really all that unexpected. And in terms of acceptable losses, only one of the dogs dies so in that regard, it made the grade. HOWEVER, like I was saying earlier, this book seems to have been edited - if at all - with a hammer or other blunt object (maybe one of the ogres lent out his club). From a slew (yes, I counted) of commas thrown where they were NOT needed to an equal if not greater number of same missing where they were needed, things just got out of hand.

When we get finished putting you back together, I'm gonna tear you to pieces.

And no, before you begin criticizing me or my own mistakes in this review, I can't overlook that nor can I overlook the plethora of other punctuation mistakes either. Especially when I see how other authors work so hard with either editors (I know, that costs money) or at very least beta-reading teams or reading groups that pre-Audible-ize the books to make sure it's all ok, which is really helpful when you have so many missing words in your text! Plus, like I always say: make sure you have an utter bastard (or other suitable descriptive) in your pre-release review club, because the last thing you need is a cheery-faced flatterer telling you how wonderful everything is when they should be giving you a good and well-deserved slap across the eyeball with a wet noodle!

Buttercup and I are going hunting.

To be blunt, this book suffered from a lot more than haphazard punctuation. Sometimes there was so much repetition - ye gods if one more person struggled for breath multiple times or glanced about the barn in the same paragraph or even sentence! - well, it was beyond annoying. And please: pick a rule for capitalization and stick to it (hint: when addressing the sheriff, you say Sheriff John)! But like my college advisor said: if you're going to be wrong, at least be consistently wrong! Or if we saw one more person get whomped in the head so hard they fell like a sack of rocks (or any container full of rocks), well, I was going to go full banshee on things. I don't know what everyone else has been reading as the ratings are obviously very good throughout, but for me, this halves what COULD have been a 4-star rating down to a 2. And I can't tell if this group appears again in further books, which would normally be extremely tempting in terms of continuing, but count me out.

Good Old Fashioned Storytelling

The first time I read a story like this was Roger Zelazney's a Night in the Lonesome October. This tale is more of a full on story than Roger's though. Deputy Debbie is the hell on wheels girl next door. Her father is the town protector and sherriff and once you meet Buster you will never look at wiener dogs the same way again. The Boogerman in this story is not unique which makes this a roaring rollicking full on mystery with a bit of a warmth added in.

This is one time when the monster under your bed is probably your best friend at a sleepover. I highly recommend this book. In fact, I liked it so much that I bought it after I read it. I like the D Glen Casey writes.

now this is how you start a series!

Man, I'd give this book 10 stars if I could—20, even! This is the most I've enjoyed a book in a long time, and that's saying something, because I've enjoyed quite a few books in that time! The action barely ever slows down, and yet, this author has a way of presenting instantly-likable characters. There are parts of the plot I found predictable—but in the best possible way! You know, those times when being right either fills you with impending dread, or makes you whoop with delight? Both happened to me more than once as I read this book! I can't wait to read more of this series, and I hope somebody, somewhere, makes a movie or TV series from this! I'd watch it in a heartbeat!!!

There is no such thing as monsters

Small town Nebraska is boring. Just ask Sheriff John and Deputy Debbie. Maybe around the full moon, the town gets a little wild. But that's just life. School teachers aren't monsters. That's just kids talking crazy. And that big shadow running across the field? It is definitely not a hell hound. But late at night, when the shadows are deep and you hear strange noises? Probably best to stay home. Trust Sheriff John and Deputy Debbie to take care of things.
The story is never boring and you really don't want to stop reading. You get different narrators and get different views on the events as they happen. You may want to adopt a hell hound by the end.

Good idea poorly executed

I’m disappointed that I just couldn’t rate this more as the idea is entertaining but there is no context to almost anything. Why are all these monsters and demons so peaceful? Why are Th e hell house playful protective puppies? How do the vampires survive and why are they weaker as they get old because mythology says they get stronger with age. What are those energy weapons they are using and why don’t the feds know about them? And then you also have aliens … it’s too much that is unexplained. We don’t even know why the killer stopped killing for 20 years and then started again. Don’t think I’ll read more.

It came back

Great characters, fast action, coupled with humour . Fasten your seatbelt and get ready for a rip roaring ride. With a town full of supernatural monsters are spooked by something which has attacked and kill one of their own, the Sheriff's department has it's hands full with the return of a 20 year murder spree. Whose next? Who, what is doing this? The deputy remembers the last time when friend was kidnapped and rescued. Was her friend in danger again? Ride along with the Deputy as she tries to a repeat of the past. Where even the Monsters are sacred! Must read

Extraordinarily good!!!

I was literally giggling throughout the entire book at the antics perpetrated by Deputy Debbie and her cohorts😂. Mr. Casey is a wordsmith of great talent. I was able to lose myself in his world, alternating between hysterical giggles and white knuckled terror!! This man brought demons, devil dogs, and assorted paranormal beings into colorful life. You will love this book if you like kick ass heroes, supremely evil creeps, snark, suspense, humor, and mystery. I have a new favorite author😱.

Solid and Entertaining

3 stars for the book and 1 star for being available through KU. A solid story of a town full of monsters and some trouble that comes their way. Focuses on Human Sheriff and his daughter and their efforts to keep law, order, and safety in town. Story was much more superficial than I had anticipated. Little character development and depth. People were just identified as monsters with no additional context or background. Some humerous parts with Buster the demonic weenie dog. Solid but didn’t hit a home run with me.

Wow, wow and wow, so far this is my favourite book I’ve read in 2025 so far. D. Glenn Casey has crafted a story that really brings back the feel of those 80’s movies I watched as a kid. It has action, comedy, horror and even a little romance in the mix. A friend of mine suggested O give the story a try and I’m hooked. Beware The Boogerman was a great story and it was written in a way that you just had to keep reading to see what happens next. Will be getting more of this authors works in the future for sure. But I have to warn you about one thing, watch out for Buster…

Really good

Absolutely brilliant book. A little town full of strange creatures, Gargoyles, Ogres, Vampires, Werewolves, Hellhounds ,others, humans and Buttercup. I love the hounds and Buttercup. There's the Boogerman who kills creatures and the Sheriff and others with the help of the hounds and Buttercup have to find out what it is and deal with it. I really enjoyed reading this book.

An awesome monster story

I didn’t know what to think at first because all monsters are either good bad or half human half monsters. But the premise of this story was really good. I wish we had learn about the villains parents especially since he started showing his abilities in his teens. I give this rating because I swear I kept thinking how this could make a good Netflix live action show but I’d take animated also.

Laughed out loud! Just spent a gloomy day enjoying this 'horror-lite' book. As another reviewer of the author's works said, it will take you back to the days of Goosebump books, Not a heavy book by any means, this delightful work is to horror what cosy mysteries are to the authors like Agatha Christie or Dorothy Sayers. I recommend it for a lazy afternoon when you just want to be entertained without the effort of something more serious.

Something Monstrously Fun

Quick, fast-paced , monster hunting in a small town. One slight difference , the town is pop using monsters and those that love them . Sheriff John, his Deputy daughter, Debbie and many others do there best to catch a serial killer in there small town. The town folk are dropping quick as a monster starts stalking them. Quite a bit of humor helps the book move to a satisfying conclusion. Read it and have some fun.

Monster Town

If there was a place to retire and relax for monsters this town is definitely it.
This story humanized monsters to be regular people in a small town enjoying life. It was nice to picture them just trying to live regular lives, as sweet neighbors, grocery store owners and farmers dealing with every day things until this killer monster comes destroying their peace. I couldn't stop reading bc I had to know who the killer was. Really enjoyed it

real monsters??

Real monsters, living in a town, just wanting to go unnoticed, live quietly and retire peacefully?? Yes, please!! These aren’t your typical monsters that you have grown up reading about- take what you think you know and throw it out the window!! This is a fun, fresh and unique take on Monsters we all know and love! Although I did figure out the killer and a “dog” dies 🥺🥺, this was a great, fun read and I will be reading book two!!

4.5 stars Beware the Boogerman is an absolute blast—werewolves, gargoyles, demon hounds… what more could you possibly want? This is one of those rare stories where you end up rooting for the monsters just as much as the people. The town itself feels alive, eerie, and unforgettable. As soon as I finished, I immediately went searching for more books by this author, especially anything set in this wild little town. You gotta grab this one

Good, fun read!

Really enjoyed this book! If you are a fan of MIB, you'll love this. It was funny, sad, suspenseful, and a little gory. I would have easily given it 5🌟, but there was a lot of repetitive descriptions. That, and grammar problems were my only complaint. I would still definitely recommend this book though!

Loved every minute of it!

There's no such thing as monsters. Not even muffin baking ones. Or school teaching ones...
Seriously, this book is fantastic. The characters are a delight, the pacing is amazing, the emotions are real, the mystery is stunning, and all with an ending that'll have you cheering! Fantastic job!

Scary laughter

At first I wasn't sure if like this book. I ended up enjoying it. It would make a great movie. This is really a great story. While it's scary because of the killings, you're not afraid of the monsters except the demon. But in places the story is hilarious! I loved the devil dogs and tiger. I enjoyed this so very much.

A wonderful book. I enjoyed the premise and the characters were cool and pretty well developed. I enjoyed the humor and it had quick moving action.

Anybody who enjoys stories with a quirky nature will enjoy this.
The only thing I thought could have made it better would have been a little love interest.

What a good surprise! I loved this monster book except there's no such things as monsters

I thought that this was an awesome book. I liked the people and the monsters. Good story line. 😁 I wouldn't call it a horror story exactly. Maybe more fantasy with a little bit of horror.

Good start up

Not only was this a refreshing premise, it had good characters, and a nice storyline. For the first story, developing an entire cast, universe, and everything from scratch it was well done. There is room for development of the storyline, characters, and depth of the universe. I hope to continue this series and see where the author takes it.

Monster’s, not really

But some really good people with a few special skills just living life in a small town that has a few problems with relationships. This is a great place to spend relaxing with old friends while meeting new friends but remember to mind your manners or you could be bitten, chewed on or pulled apart. A very enjoyable read and strongly recommended.

Great Pulp romp

Great writing. Meaty characters. Fun, laughs, hold your breath moments and epic battles. This was a fast ride, and it took no prisoners. I won't forgive the author for Daisy, though. I'm giving them the disappointed scowl of an Aunt who is now considering downsizing the piece of cake they get. It made me laugh and cry. Definitely would recommend.

I found a cross of Eureka, Xfiles and Special Unit 2. The opening looked like everyone was getting overwhelmed and a few characters were taken out very quickly leaving you to wonder who's left. The source of the Boogerman's powers was not disclosed although you could surmise based on the identity reveal, some Deal with Darkness was made for revenge. Pretty well written.

Love the (not real) monsters

This book made me laugh, cry a little, and just keep turning pages. It has heart, a fast paced story, and well developed characters. There were a few mistakes in punctuation and missing words, so I dinged it a star, but a solid story and I want to read more!
