Took this one slow, starting when our daughter was about 3 months old and just finished it now (she's 15 months old). She's SO good with sign language and I have this book to thank most of all for explaining timing, how to interpret their first signs, and when/how to introduce signs. Sign language will continue to be a form of communication for us even with her now speaking many words!

This book is geared for anyone working/spending time with infants & toddlers (and honestly adults too). It’s a great way to start communicating with your baby before they are able to talk. Presented in an easy to understand format. Clear picture of the sign, instruction on how to make the sign, a memory tip to help you remember the sign. Full of commonly used words. Begins with 10 signs to learn especially for babies. Start signing these to your child as young as you can. They are watching and listening and will pick up it. I found ASL is a great tool to help with speech development. Remaining chapters are organized by order of usefulness including getting dressed, bath & bed time, playtime, animals, family, and feelings. I found ASL is a great tool to help with speech development. Highly recommend this book.

We received this book to give an honest review.

I am so glad that this book was made as I learned more words to work with my daughter who is 5. I started showing her sign language when she was 6 months but I didn't know a lot of different words but "play, nice, drink and more." So to have a book that has not only the words but pictures, how and when to use the signs make it so much more easier. It is easy to read and the child or children you are teaching can actually see the picture of another child doing the sign. I would highly recommend this and when I am subbing at the school I am going to teach the younger kids some signs. I know for sure this is one book I wish I had when both of my kids were babies as I could have taught them so much more than just the few words I remembered.

Really great! Most of the book is descriptions of signs, with suggests of how to incorporate into your daily life and what it might look like when your baby starts signing. She does not overload you with information about signing with your baby, rather just gives you practical tips to get started and make it easy, which I appreciate. I'll probably buy this to have as a reference when I want to start new signs with the baby.

A book that does what it says on the cover. It does make baby sign language easy.

The author knows how busy parents are. They need a book that will get to the point and help them now. And, she says as much in her introduction - "I know you don't have the time to or desire to read hundreds of pages about the history of sign language.."

So, from the get go, the parent is given practical and useful tools to learn sign language and also teach them to baby. Words such as "milk", "ball" and "bed" are shown with an image of a child making the sign as well a brief explanation on how to create the word with their hands.

Divided in to eight chapters from Family and Feelings to Animals, the book quickly establishes confidence in teaching a child to communicate. Each word has it's own page and Rebelo gives memory tips regarding how to remember to sign a word. Example when signing "bath", the memory tip is "It's like you're washing your body in the bath." Furthermore, the book will give hints as to what to look for when seeing if the baby is signing (back).

This book is brilliant in its simplicity and ease of use. The chapters don't have to be read in order, it's simple to go from Chapter One to Chapter Five. I especially like that the author gives ideas on how to use the sign language when reading or singing songs. It's informative, humorous and filled with helpful suggestions.

Overall, highly recommended for any parent or caregiver who wants to learn and introduce sign language in their everyday lives. And, it's not geared towards children with hearing problems. It's for every baby who can't talk yet, it's an effective tool for them to say "hey, change my diaper," in a few hand movements.

I received a copy of this book to review from the Callisto Media Inc.. The opinions expressed are my own and I am not required to give a positive critique.

We love using this book!! The most helpful parts are what the sign might look like in a young child.

I wish she didn’t give the impression that every baby starts signing at 9 months… ours didn’t really take up on it until 13 months that we noticed, and we almost gave up. Now she’s a signing rockstar!

Something else the book doesn’t tell us is that because their motor skills are so limited they may not be able to put much distinction between signs like mom and dad. So my daughter does it and depending on context we know which she’s trying to say, but not based on the signs.

She really takes to signs for things she loves, it’s really cute! We showed her fan maybe twice and now that’s all she does!

Overall I refer to this book often. If your kid is struggling picking it up, stick with it!

I never completely got through this book, because I'm a cover-to-cover person and it was difficult for me to jump around, but used a TON of the signs in it with both of my kiddos and it was amazingly helpful in early communication with them.

I mostly appreciated the descriptions of the signs (how to remember them, or where they came from), and practical ways to help you see when your young child is making the sign, since it may not always look like what you expect! It's a great training tool, in combination with the online dictionary for visuals, for anyone caring for a young child to encourage their communication. Total worth starting to study even before you have your first little one!

What a great resource! This is an excellent introduction to baby sign language rooted in ASL signs. The author gives great descriptions of when and how to use the various signs practically such as when leaving the house, or while preparing food, plus some fun moments like incorporating them into songs. I will be hanging onto this borrow for a bit for reference. Great for revisiting signs you may already know, and for adding some into your repertoire. I will be checking out the other book in this series.

One thing I did not know: if you are not a native English speaker, then it might be more interesting to look for a different book. Even baby sign language is language-specific, apparently. If you do wish to teach your baby English sign language, then I would definitely recommend this one. It is very helpful: includes gestures and songs to help babies train them, with tips on when to use them and how to recognize imperfect executions by your little one.

Great beginner’s guide for anyone wanting to learn sign language to teach to a baby or toddler. The FAQ section covered all the questions I had. The author did a great job explaining the benefits of sign language and how easy it is to incorporate in your life on a daily basis. The pictures of each sign as well the description were really helpful. I also love that at the end of each chapter the author provides examples of a song or book you can sign and read to your baby.

A super handy guide for teaching babies ASL! I like that the author encourages using genuine ASL signs, and I’m hopeful that this will be helpful in teaching our little one to communicate! I especially valued that the author included pictures of how to do the signs, memory cues, and tips about how the signs might look different when signed by baby hands. I guess we will see in the next few months if it works for us!

I honestly think I finished this a while ago and forgot that I did. But I will say this has been a great resource throughout my son's first years of life! We were able to teach him some basic signs to help him communicate with us, and it is definitely helpful to have a whole dictionary of common words at our fingertips. I also like that the author includes songs and stories you can practice the signs with. Looking forward to teaching our second some signs with this book!

Very helpful and descriptive for how the signs should look. I had a foundation of sign language going in so the refresher for many signs was great and the information and reassurance for my child's abilities was very helpful. We are already getting some early versions of signs like "more" and "all done" from our 10 month old. We started signing to her around 6 months. It puts us at ease to have a resource that helps us communicate with our baby before she is ready for words.

If you already know signs this book isn't that helpful. This book is on Baby Sign Language, not ASL, even though the signs they use come from ASL. So there's no grammar, syntax, conversation or anything like that. I can imagine this is for people who want to simcom with their children until they speak. I was expecting disciplinary signs but there were none. Really a trash book for what I need.

Absolutely fabulous.

Easy to learn, use, and understand. The practical how to teach tips makes the signs easy to use.

Signing with my toddler before he knows the words for things has been SO helpful!

Highly recommend for any parent who struggles with understanding what their young child is trying to communicate.

Super helpful! Our 11 month old (as of this date!) signs “all done” and “water” back to us, and understands the signs for many other things, especially “milk”! She is a little slower on language production but her comprehension is just fine. This will help as she gets older to let us know what she wants and needs when she cannot say the words but is getting better at her fine motor skills.

This is a great book. My kid has learned almost all of them so I bought another one that has 200 signs! Highly recommend this book. Only "complaint" would be that it's not always easy to understand the illustrations so I do watch ASL videos to learn as well.

An excellent resource for anyone who has occasion to interact with a non-hearing child. The book not only shows drawings of the sign, but also gives you memory tips, when to use the sign, and things to watch for as the child is learning to use the sign. I found it extremely he!pful.
