LOVE ME FOR WHAT I AM NOT WHAT I TRY TO BE LOVE ME FOR WHO I AM SOMEONE IMPERFECTLY ME!!!!!!!!!!!!
William Finn you are one of the best composers and writers ever and I stand by that fact. This silly little one act show is just so!!! genius!!!! Yes deciphering a line upon reading/listening the first time is nearly impossible but this show is utterly brilliant. The flashbacks are fresh and interesting and gives you an idea of how Marvin grew up and why he’s a bad person that you just can’t help but sympathize with. “I’m a person” being said by the three girls, but not having names is genius and shows how self centered Marvin is. Ugh every time I come back to this show I feel more and more bad for his sweetheart. Embarrassed and ashamed by Marvin but she’ll never end it off since she wants someone to love her badly is so depressing and very relatable. This show is just so important to me and I need to see this show live!! High school ladies at 5’o clock supremacy
“Marvin always gets the things he wants, except the things he wants” 😭😭😭 William Finn I have things to say to you
I’ve been a fan of In Trousers for years now, so it was really cool to read the script and finally fit some pieces together that I had been missing! William Finn has stated that this musical is no longer part of the Falsettos storyline, and that is definitely understandable, but it’s still very interesting to see the first iterations of Marvin, his wife, and his relationship with Whizzer. Now that I’ve read this in full, I can see how it’s a little bit messy/hard to understand in some spots, and definitely not true to what we now know as Falsettos, but I still really enjoyed this! If you love Falsettos/In Trousers and want some clarity, or just some interesting lore, this is definitely worth picking up!
while not nearly as good as the last two parts of the so-called Marvin Trilogy, "In Trousers" is an interesting one-act musical that provides additional depth to the not so easily loved character, even if it's apparently not exactly canon anymore? idk i'm confused
as much as i enjoyed it, i don't think it's worth reading unless you're already familiar with Falsettos, as it's just not as good as a standalone play
