Flesh-eating zombies on campus. A virus gone wild. Do I stand a chance against the undead?

My name is Jane, and tonight is my first night on the air.

I’m looking forward to my isolated night shifts at the school radio station. It's the only place I can escape the bullies and quiet my anxiety. When rumors spread of a viral epidemic ripping through the wintery campus, I’m happy to be safe in the snug studio. But after communications go down and the infected break into the station, my peace turns into panic.

Fearing for my life, my only path of escape runs through the dark, snow-covered campus. But it may be too late to escape the gaping jaws of the walking dead. Will I be able to fight off the zombies and outrun the apocalypse, or will flesh-eating terrors teach me a deadly final lesson?

Picked this book to have a dose of my zombie fetish. I haven't read much but so far this is my least favorite out of all of them

I hate when the character does this,
How rude of me. I didn’t introduce myself. My name is Jane. At the time of this story, I am in my second semester of college away from home, and the introvert in me is coming out again.

The thing is

1. She's absolutely not an introvert.

2. ‎Her "I know he's into me" spiel about the professor is ridiculous.

"I swear he gives me one of his sly smiles again. I look away, wondering if anyone else notices. Maybe I’m reading too much into what’s happening. "

"It seems like every time I look at him, he’s already looking at me. It’s eerie."

3. ‎Cure for cancer on the news and no one bas heard of it in class? Impossible.

4. ‎Is she dumb?

As I walk by, I see people hitting each other with chairs, punching each other, basically tearing each other apart. I see a guy bite someone. What’s wrong with people?

5. There's just too much wrong in this book for me.

Ok. So, I hate starting out a review like this, but….. YOWIE WOWIE! D: Closed Campus had just so many problems. I hate just opening up a review with “This book was bad”… but… this one was tough read.

I’ll start with the good parts.

The premise of a zombie apocalypse ground zero at a college campus was pretty fun. Lots of great things you could do with that! Not to mention it gave a fresh feel to the zombie genre. I also thought it was interesting with the whole radio station and walkie talkie communication part of the plot. Another cool plot point was how the main bad guy could control the zombies. I don’t want to say too much about it because I don’t want to give away any big spoilers, but I thought it was an clever little twist to zombies.

Another highlight of this book is that it had a very fast pace. Pretty much right away stuff starts going sideways and the action keeps building through the whole book. There were very few slow downs and the characters kept moving quickly. I have always loved the zombie genre and to me, a key part of the genre is a quick flow to the story. Even if the characters are just trying to fortify a house the whole time, as long as there is forward movement of some kind- trying to board up the house, looking for weapons, learning new info from a radio/ tv, etc. A zombie book where the characters find a place to hid and then just sit around and talk about their feelings for the whole time, with no zombie action *COUGH* The Walking Dead after season 1 *COUGH* gets SUPER boooooring! We want ZOMBIES. That is why we are reading a ZOMBIE book (or watching a zombie movie / tv show or playing a zombie video game). If the characters aren’t constantly dealing with the zombie problem or, in some cases, trying to find the cure, the story gets very stale FAST. Closed Campus did not get stale. The author constantly had the main group dealing with the zombies, trying to escape, trying to figure out what the hell was going on.

Ok, so now to the bad parts.

Oh boy. I hate to say this….. but…. this book felt more like highschool fanfiction. D: It didn’t help my mindset when I read an afterword from the author saying how she only just discovered the zombie genre recently after her husband got a zombie game to play. D: I know I’m being kind of a book snob here, but it’s a really big pet peeve of mine when an author does a certain genre when they don’t really know much about that genre. It happens a lot with horror books and it just…. really irks me off. I’m NOT saying this author did not research zombies before she wrote this book, but…. *shrug* You can feel the author’s passion for the story, but something just felt off. :/

Some of the dialogue was just… strange. I don’t really know how to explain it. It was just kind of…. clunky, maybe? And some very strange vocab choices for these college kids. Ok, granted, I haven’t been in college for, like, 11 years give or take… but, I feel like words like “fracas” aren’t exactly a go to word for young college kids to just throw around without trying to be ironic, sarcastic or a hipster, which none of them were. There were several times when the words just didn’t seem to match the characters, if you know what I mean? It felt so… disjointed… that it left me feeling a real WTF sort of feeling.

Along with odd vocab dialogue, there were problems with the way things were explained to the reader. Now, I can’t write my way out of a paper bag as far as writing a story goes, but I read a lot. I always have. And in Closed Campus, the writing felt very… simplistic. Especially when things were being explained. The book is filled with stiff dialogue like “We went to this building. Now we are walking to that building. Now we are at this building. Now we are going up a ladder.” Those aren’t direct quotes from the book, but it is what it felt like when the author was describing locations and plans of how to escape. Very basic. A little too to the point. D: This sort of choppy writing made the book hard to read.

At first, I was super happy to see the main character suffered from anxiety problems and was an introvert. I thought it was so cool getting to see a main character in a horror book like that. Someone I could easily connect to because I also have anxiety and an introvert. So I was like YAY!

The thing is…. Jane is totally NOT an introvert! Like, at all!! 😡 She was pretty out going and seemed to have zero problems talking and semi-flirting with people. She had no problems telling people what to do, or giving directions or sort of public social talking. I get it that there is a spectrum of introvert / extrovert. Everyone is a little different. Some people are more, some people are less, some people are right in the middle between the two. But Jane didn’t really show any signs at all that she was an introvert. The only time she “showed” it, is when she just would randomly say “that’s me being an introvert again.” *Looks around* Where? Where exactly were you being an introvert, because I must have missed it. :/

Jane kinda-sorta-but-not-really being an introvert wasn’t the only problem with her. For being a somewhat smart character, sometimes she acted so damn stupid!! Ok, so she has a lot on her mind right now…. she’s homesick and she has this big new radio DJ job she is nervous about… so, yeah, ok, she’s got a lot going on… But seriously. You walk by a restrunt where there is a huge fight going on and you see people BITTING other people and tearing them apart and….. you just fucking keep walking like you are on an everyday casual Sunday stroll?? REALLY? You aren’t going to stop and gawk? You aren’t going to question WTF is going on in there? You aren’t going to alert anyone, like cops, or 911 at least? You aren’t going to whip your phone out and start filming this so you can upload it to social media or make a meme out of it? What kind of college kid are you?? Nope. Jane just keeps on walking. La dee da. Whateves. I don’t think she even brought it up when she arrived at the NEWS radio station.

Was this scene supposed to be satire? Like in Shaun of the Dead, how he was oblivious to the zombie like society around him? Because it didn’t read like satire. And it just made Jane look mega stupid. D: There are other times in the book when she does stupid stuff like that but this was the biggest YOU-GOTTA-BE-KIDDING-ME moment example of it.

Closed Campus had a lot of ridiculous moments that were just too unbelievable. But Ami, it’s a zombie book, of course it’s going to be ridiculous and unbelievable! Yeah, ok. Zombie stories are normally pretty crazy. But in this book, there were just a lot of little ridiculous things that built up and it just didn’t work. Like, in one day Jane get’s hit on by two creeper characters- her teacher and the star hockey player. Really? -.- The whole ending / reveal is just… oh boy. Not to mention it was really predictable and cliched. It also feels like there are a lot of contradictions with the story and with the characters. Like, sometimes the personality just seems to change for no reason. I don’t know. It was just so awkward.

I really, really wanted to like this book. I love reading zombie stories and this one had such a fun premise! Zombies in college! Awesome! But, wow, the execution was just so rough. With all the problems I listed above, it was really hard to finish this book. Closed Campus is a book 1 in a series. I wish this author all the best with it. I do not think I will be picking up book 2 though.

A "Book Review Campaign Manger for best-selling author Gayle Katz" emailed me from my blog to see if I was interested in reading a free book - A Zombie book - Sure, why not. I've read a ton.

A couple months later I got around to reading said book: Closed Campus (Jane Zombie Chronicles). As I read a great deal of SPAs (Self-Published Authors), I was looking forward to enjoying a decent tale of brain-eating, chaos, and destruction.

But man. This book needs some major love. Usually that translates to "needs a real editor." But actually, the editing isn't bad. It is the story and how it was presented that needs love.

The dialogue is pretty stiff and vanilla. The story and some of the action sequences are borderline preposterous - even for a zombie book.

There is a 'great reveal;' the motive behind the madness, but it comes more toward the middle of the book with little-to-no actual build up. And that too is so bizarre - but it is more akin to a short plot point that if the reader skimmed those two pages, they may miss it completely.

Jane, in one day - before zombies - almost gets a me-too hashtag by two different dudes, then is attracted to one guy then another and it feels like love. Weird.

For a college radio station, all the employees, sans Jane, seem to be clueless on the layout of the campus in the small town.

Outside of the rather 'plausible' motive and successful viral unleash in this book. I did find an interesting take having Patient Zero (for lack of better label and for not giving it away) having control over the hordes. Sorta like a zombie-vampire den.

Who knows, maybe the story, characters, dialogue, plot, creative license, suspense, action, and whatever I'm not listing -- will get better as the series and author matures.

For me personally, it really did feel like a high-school short-story was expanded on a bit then published.

ARC provided.

Closed Campus is a Must Read!
Two of the things I am most passionate about in this world are zombies and higher education. Closed Campus by Gayle Katz combines both with a great plot and well-developed characters. I was thoroughly impressed by Ms. Katz ability to perfectly describe the campus in a way that was so evocative, I felt that I was there. Furthermore, Jane and Jack’s heroic adventure was framed nicely by their heartwarming personalities.
I loved Closed Campus so much that have already pre-ordered the second novel in this series: Rotting Rage (Jane Zombie Chronicles Book 2). Gayle Katz is an excellent writer, and I am happy to welcome her to the zombie genre!

Jane a young college student starts her first overnight shift as a DJ at the campus radio station. When the day shift comes in and takes over Jane decides to stick around for a while instead of heading back to her dorm as her first class starts shortly.

Jane is taking it easy listening to the morning DJ’s and seeing how they run the show when someone busts through the doors. They start to tell them about what is going on outside with all the students that they are all acting crazy and that they attacked them and bit the guy on the arm. The next thing they know the guys tries to attack them. They decide they need to get out of there quick and get help.

So they make a plan. They will split up into groups of two. One group will make their way to the snowplow machines on campus and the other will try to make it to get one Jane’s professor’s 4X4 truck on the other side of campus. So Jack and Jane make their way across campus to get the professor’s truck. Hopefully, they can find some type of transportation so they can get off campus and find help before it is too late.

I love me some zombies and once I found out about Closed Campus and Jane and her zombies I had to give it a try. I don’t think I will ever get tired of zombies. I really loved following Jack and Jane as they made their way about in the snow up to their umm rear almost and fighting zombies the whole way. Jack and Jane make a very good team and both have hearts as big as an ocean and will put their own lives in danger to save the other.

When I was reading Campus Closed I felt as if I was right there beside Jack and Jane stomping through the snow and feeling the burn just as much as they did and feeling the adrenaline rushing through my veins hoping they would make it to their destination without coming across any zombies or at least make it safely. Once I started reading Campus Closed I couldn’t put it down I devoured it in just a few hours. I can’t wait to read more of the Jane Zombie Chronicles.

I would recommend Campus Closed to anyone who loves zombies and young adult books with lots of action around every corner.

I was not sure if I would like a story about Zombies but the author put a nice twist on the story.

This is the first book in the series and the first time I have read something from Gayle Katz. I will read the other books in the series because I am hooked.

I think you may like the books also.

MOST FUN ZOMBIE INVASION EVER!

Like zombies with your Christmas? Well, you’re in luck! Here’s some Holiday Horror served up just for you. And that clock ticking in the background? It’s counting down the minutes before the invasion begins!

Jane is about to hit the airwaves. In just a few hours, the struggling pre-med student will be taking over the late-night DJ spot at the student-run local radio station and she can’t wait to get started. She’s already had a run-through and now comes her solo which entails going live all on her lonesome. Yes, tonight she’ll be all alone, locked up nice and safe straight through til morning. Her only mission? To keep the music playing. She’s sure she can handle that responsibility. Because the worst that could happen is having a spate of “dead” air mar her debut. But, unfortunately, it’s not the worst situation that could occur … not even close. Her critical thinking came up short on disasters and never considered that there are lots of different concepts and scenarios connected with the word “dead.” It’s why Jane is about to experience the worst option of all because many years ago, a pair of indulgent parents bought their son Benjamin a chemistry set for Christmas … and good ole Ben grew up to be a professor at Jane’s university. In fact, he’s the self-same professor that she, and an entire classroom of antsy students, are anxiously waiting to start this morning’s chemistry class. But Ben is AWOL. In the throes of a panic over a problem encountered with a new strain of virus he created, he has no idea how his experiment went so horribly wrong. But he’s a smart guy … and an egotistical one. It’s the “playing God” side of him that leads him to believe he can correct the mutation before any further collateral damage occurs, but he’s going to fail. Uber and catastrophically. And it’s this ineptitude that puts Jane directly in the path of an oncoming “undead” invasion that is set to derail her inaugural appearance as DJ and turn her into somebody’s dinner if those hungry zombies have their way.

That sets the stage for the wild doings in CLOSED CAMPUS: A FIRST-PERSON ZOMBIE EXPERIENCE. It’s quite an adventure, but where better for a zombie to find a Smörgåsbord than on a college campus? Gotta say I LOVED THIS BOOK! It rides the edge of horror counterpunched with humor. It’s a difficult combination to pull off, but author Gayle Katz does a superb job in avoiding all the pitfalls associated with the undertaking which leaves us with this little polished gem to chew on … and chew I did! I mean I bit hard! This book is sheer rollicking fun with some mighty grisly bloodbaths thrown in for entertainment! Think of a human-parts Thanksgiving dinner laid out with all the fixin’s and you’ll get the idea!

The story unravels at the speed of light. And it’s the fast-paced action that gets us from thrill-to-thrill. Sudden twists keep a’coming and had me guessing about what came next. The excellent writing helped a lot. If I had to describe it, I’d say it was combination of “just enough description to set the scene” and “let’s put Jane in even more danger and see how she gets outta this one.” It’s this all-out assault on the very likeable Jane that provides the momentum to power us through the action and have us pulling for our feisty heroine to prevail. And did I mention that it isn’t just Jane fighting for her freakin’ inalienable right to remain human? No? Well, I am now because there’s an entire team of stragglers not yet exhibiting cannibalistic tendencies who band together and form a team whose major objective is to keep from being bitten at all costs! They know better than to fall for the puppy dog eyes helpless act because the number one motto is: Never Trust a Zombie Not to Bite. So, the tight-knit band helps Jane and themselves avoid a very ugly transmogrification while trying to figure out what the heck is going on besides the mayhem. After all, zombies don’t just grow on trees … but there just might be some growing in that crazy college professor’s secret lab.

But it’s Jane our headlights are trained on. I mean, how in the midst of all the chaos does she manage to find a hunkadoodle named Jack to commiserate with her? And pull various body parts of hers out of the fire and away from sets of pretty sharp severe choppers. Who knew devastatingly gorgeous and concerned men were such clutch players? But her good fortune in finding him begs the question of why some girls have all the luck. And, truthfully, we could tell pretty quickly she was going to need all that luck to outmaneuver what was going on. Who knew zombies were so crafty? And resourceful? And hungry?

Definitely download this baby! This first entry in the series is priced FREE, and nothing beats FREE! So it’s a win-win with no downside. That’s especially true if you’ve been searching for a little Christmas horror to tide you through the drinking of eggnog! So put down the reindeer sugar cookie and kick Santa to the curb for a minute to give you time to click and get your copy. It surely is a great read from beginning to end, but are zombies ever really finished? Doubtful. Can’t wait until I find out what else they have up their nasty little sleeves because it’s five stars from me.

While "fun" isn't normally the word you'd use for a zombie thriller, I'm going to use it here; this was just fun to read. It was fairly light and fluffy (again, for a zombie book), with a protagonist who was a bit silly at times and flailed about at others, but no more than any other college freshman would do when confronted with zombies and crazy people (a Venn diagram that overlaps at the edges but has plenty of room in each circle). It's a pretty quick read and easy to get through.

In skimming the other comments, I noticed some of the things that people were complaining about. I agree there were some things that just rang false; Jane, for example, frequently describes herself as a lonely introvert who's not that great with people, but her behavior shows that that is untrue on all counts. There is also something weird about how suddenly, right before things go bad, all of a sudden a whole bunch of men start paying attention to her--very intrusive, demanding attention. Given her surprised and confused reaction to this, it's not something that was a frequent event before. Since this was repeatedly noted by Jane as weird behavior, it makes me wonder if it is somehow tied in to the virus. I would also think that it's possible that the virus was already acting on Jane, which would explain why her perception of herself did not match her actions at all, but she seemed totally unaware of the contradiction.

Since this is book 1 of a series, I am going to assume there were plot points that set up future books woven within this one. The book felt slightly "off" to me, but I think it's entirely possible that this was on purpose. At least, I am going to give the author the benefit of the doubt until I read further into the series; I'm not going to slam her for something that could easily be a plot device, until and unless I establish that it isn't.

For all of the above, that it was a fun read and I wasn't sure if some of the criticism is really fair, I'm still not going above 3 stars. It was a fun way to spend some time, but not a lot more than that.

Title: Closed Campus (Jane Zombie Chronicles Book 1)
Author: Gayle katz
Length: no page # given. Only have 1907 locations.

➡What was the story about? ⬇
It's about girl going out of her safely zone from her parents to go to college. But her world is turned upside down from sociopath teacher!!

➡How was the character's? main/multiple character's in this book?⬇
Only in first person point of view. College student named Jane.
She started out okay but little girly and shy. But as time went by she started standing up for herself with some bully's but for one that was the teacher guy he was way to strong from the infection in him.
Jack's character was done well and I liked the old guy bill.

➡Did you like this book & how you felt about the book?⬇
Yes I did like it but it was touch and go for me plus it is book 1. Hope to read more from this series. I can see it going somewhere. It was little different on the virus. We all know how and where and why it all started. Don't have to wait until book 3 or 4 to get answers. Loved the whole group they work out all together. I hope the two who fell made it?!

➡dislikes about this book?⬇
There was few mixed up word's here and there. ( errors)
Also guessing it's maybe for the YA reading group. Not bad. It had that type of writing flow to it.

So sure, I’m 43 years old and love a good, thorough thriller that makes me think for days and try to find the next satisfying read to take on next. I just finished Fairy Tale by Stephen King and nothing can compare yet. Fun books like this are great palate cleansers that read fast. This one is definitely geared toward and perfect for YA but I love YA, as most of us older readers still do.

It’s fast. It’s silly. It’s zombies. It’s not ground breaking material, but it’s fun and I read it in a few hours. I’ve new reading so many crap domestic thrillers that people are just raving about - if I read about one more rich housewife with secrets or a husband with secrets I will literally become a zombie myself.

So yea, it may be fluffy reading, but it was fun. Not everything has to be Shakespeare, man.

Jane is in her sophomore year at college and her chemistry professor seems to have taken an unusual interest in her. She also is working the night shift at a local radio station. Then, everything falls apart.

You've got zombies, the military, an insane professor, terrified (and quickly ending up becoming zombified) college students and an attempt by Jane and some others to make a desperate attempt at fleeing.(Which they do in a rather intelligent way, actually.) Still, the professor's not done with her by any means and neither are the zombies.

It's an interesting take on zombie stories and it's fairly well done.

I know there are lots of zombie lit out there but if you are a zombie fan then this is so easy to get into, the pacing is just right. Characters are well liked and it flows. This is a first piece of work I have read by Gayle and she has done a fun job. Doesn't bog the reader down with too much science like some zombie fiction have a habit of doing. But she also doesn't get bogged down with excessive gore a bit of a shame but then it almost makes it accessible to teens and up.
The dog is handy and totally for the win!

Oh boy! This isn't horrible, but it's not really worth reading either. One dimensional characters in unbelievable circumstances. Don't get me wrong! Zombies ARE unbelievable circumstances and I DO like a good zombie story - unfortunately this isn't one of them.

I picked up the entire series on KU - so fortunately I didn't pay for them, but after finishing the 1st one in the series I'm returning the rest, unread.

If you're looking for light reading and don't mind discrepancies in characterization and plot, you might like it.

It was good. I enjoyed reading this book but at times found the MC to be very juvenile and dislikable. For example, one point she is complaining about losing books and make-up from her bag while being attacked and fleeing for her life, and there are other times she makes questionable remarks that I can't see someone making during an apocalyptic situation.

Overall though it did keep me entertained.

This is a great start to an interesting zombie series. It is written like a young adult book but is a good story. This is a short story that didn't feel rushed by the end of it. There is mystery, action, adventures and all the things you might expect from a zombie story with a twist. There are more books in the series that I will definitely be reading so I can see where the characters end up at the end of it all.

This is the sort of story I really like!

This is a zombie story with just about everything in it. A mad professor, the good guys bore able guys , an animal and a g
ood ending. It has enough suspense that it kept me interested from the start to finish and I read it on a hot afternoon so I didn't have to move too much.

Well worth reading.

Pretty good start to a new series

I enjoyed this book. It is a quick read and the pacing is fast n full of action. The characters seem to get out of impossible situations a little too easy though. Thats really my only gripe with the story. Fun read i definitely recommend it

3.5 stars: This book has quite a few mixed reviews and I can understand why.

Overall, I genuinely liked the premise of the book with a zombie outbreak on a college campus. There were even a couple of twists that were fun to read about, making me want to know more about the characters! However, the writing lends to not a ton of detail being described about the environment/scene, character personalities, or plot development from the plot devices. I would have liked to see the book be a little bit longer with more elaboration on key points in the story.

I really wanted to love Jane, the female protagonist. I am a sucker for a strong female lead, even if there is a comjng of age portion of their development. Jane was interesting at first being new to college and trying to find where fit in. She is portrayed as a shy, inexperienced introvert but her encounters with various campus boys and professors doesn’t support that backstory. I also DESPISED how she became a sniveling, frozen with fear character multiple times over. I understand being scared in a zombie apocalypse, but this is a fictional story and I need my lead character TO DO SOMETHING. The story read as Jane being the main perspective but Jack being more of the lead character. Very strange.

Despite some clear issues with the book, I still enjoyed reading it! The dialogue was clunky, but the writing was decent. It was a very easy read; a great addition to my current state of reading multiple books at once. I would say if you expect this to be a mediocre to decent apocalyptic young adult, zombie book….then you will likely enjoy this well enough too.

lacking so much

To much emphasis on how all the guys have 6 pack abs and want to have sex with the lead female, even the professor has 6 pack abs and is obsessive about having the lead. The lead is an introvert who wants to be more extroverted and is often frozen during stressful situations. Given that she is a loner with odd behavior and nothing suggests she does any kind of fitness, I can’t help but think this whole story is either the leads wish fulfillment dream or something.
The story itself had potential, in that I thought it was going to be a mutated sexually transmitted disease that increases the emission of pheromones but eventually zombifies its victims given the information in the first two chapters. Instead the story just lacked cohesion and weird things happened that never show up again or are explained. One example is this blood attacks the professor and grabs his finger, crawls up it and enters a wound, but that is the only instance blood acts differently. The author focused so much on how everyone was making out in full view of others, specifically focusing on the saliva streaming out between the mouths of two people making out in public. Given the fact that this was a zombie story with chapter one introducing the sentient blood and then the focus on people making out and sharing saliva is what led me to my premise but nothing in the first two chapters were revisited.

I usually like an end of the world, zombie story but this one just didn't do it for me at all. I wouldn't bother reading it if I were you there are way better to be found in this genre.

The Blair Witch Project meets The Walking Dead in this hair-raising apocalyptic tale seen through the eyes of a feisty female heroine.
