Summary of Switch On Your Brain Part 1: How to Switch on Your Brain
1: Mind Controls Matter
The main Scripture is 2 Timothy 1:7. The spirit that God has given us is of the power of love and a sound mind instead of that of fear. The relevant science concept accentuates that we have been programmed for love with a natural bias for optimism. The scientific debate lies between the brain's actions defining the mind versus the brain performing what the mind says. According to the first idea, our thoughts originate from the brain as if the brain is producing every part of our mental experiences. Those who are of this opinion are known as materialists. This view highlights that our brain is responsible for our thoughts and feelings. However, this perspective is incorrect from religious and scientific points of view.

Dr Caroline Leaf takes the reader through some scientific discoveries about how we can all change our thinking and therefore our brains. I knew about neuroplasticity – the ability of the brain to modify and change in form and function – but I didn't know anything about epigenetics. This is all about how changed thinking and behaviours can physically alter the way our genes work. It doesn't affect our DNA sequence but does change the way we 'read' that sequence. In other words, instead of our brains being in charge of us feeding a potential victim mentality, it is scientifically proved that we can develop different responses and so take charge of what our brains tell us. Thus, we may have an inherited propensity towards a particular behaviour but we are not destined to submit to it, be it alcoholism, depression, violence, addiction, or anything else.
I confess I got a bit lost with the quantum physics references, but definitely worth the persistence of reading to the end. Dr Leaf maintains that science is in fact, catching up with the Bible in terms of altering mind sets, changing long set patterns of thinking, discarding anxiety and discovering peace as a biological reality. She shows how memories (strings of proteins) manifest themselves and can be established in our complex brains for good or ill.
She also has a 21 day programme for ejecting toxic thought patterns and establishing new ones which includes gathering information, focused reflection, writing things down, revisiting experiences and setting goals to move forward. 21 days is the length of time it takes to make those new pathways so that they don't vanish and revert to previous functioning. She encourages the reader to develop these cycles and go through them as frequently as is helpful, using separate ones for different issues.
The tone is not patronising or overly academic and every chapter ends with a summary of helpful bullet points. Accessible, intriguing and well worth a read.
