"Captain" Reid wrote many adventure novels akin to those written by Frederick Marryat and Robert Louis Stevenson. He was a great admirer of Lord Byron. These novels contain action that takes place primarily in untamed settings: the American West, Mexico, South Africa, the Himalayas, and Jamaica.
Quite a decent book with a mediocre story told about a man who appears episodically and with agenda not that different from his enemies (at least in my book stealing someone's daughter is an indecent deed), sprinkled with well-crafted storytelling tropes apart from the inconsistent tempo of narration and some interesting quirks of Mexican life back then. The book is likeable, it is engaging and easy to follow. I would have loved for the climax and resolution to be detailed slightly more, but alas. Breaking the infamous wall was ok-ish but could be done better. Borderline 3-4 stars, rather a 3.75
Ok, it was promised to be one of the best novels in the history, but felt to me as reading a typical soap opera. I used to what Santa Barbara and this is pretty much it. I might not be getting it. I guess the depiction of emotions and feelings of people is quite good, but still not good enough for me to like it too much.
Fantasies of a racist man who thinks is better than everyone else, takes no responsibility and justifies all kinds of evil because he was hurt once. The main character literally massacred a whole town, including innocent children (while saving his girl's dad ofc) and felt entitled to it.

Fascinating prehistory of the western genre inspired by Reid's seeing Aztlán while fighting in the Mexican/American War. Does for New Mexico what his THE HEADLESS HORSEMAN does for Texas, describes a strange, new world. Of course, the hero is white/güero. Mixed-bloods don't fare as well, mestizos, mulattos, and zambos are all nefarious double-crossers.
