"I write because if I don't...my head will explode, and ruin the drapes." ♥
Brooke writes complex, character-driven stories about kismet, reunited lovers, first love, and the kind of romance that we should all have the chance at finding. She prefers her stories laced with some humor just for fun, and enough drama to keep her readers flipping the pages, and begging for more.
When Brooke isn't spinning tales, she spends her time drawing/cartooning, reading, watching movies then comparing them to books, wrangling five kids, mugging on one hubby she lovingly refers to as her "nerd", and attempting to conquer the Mount Everest of laundry that is the bane of her existence.
Brooke is also an avid Autism Awareness advocate, and a passionate foster/adoptive mother, who loves to share her experiences with anyone who will listen.
I have been reading a number of anthologies lately. It is a wonderful way to get to know authors that I may not have otherwise and, also, to read different genres. Although ONCE UPON A SUMMER definitely has a romantic theme, each story was uniquely different. I loved being transported into the lives of the couples as they went everywhere from Australia, to a suspensful treasure hunt, and beyond. Great job!
This review is only for Stealing Haven by Mark Love, one of the short stories in this anthology.
This 20,000-word short story is a wonderful introduction to Jamie Richmond, a reporter who is always attracted to curiosity and adventure. Set in South Haven, this relaxing tourist spot is not only a haven for a budding bittersweet romance but also a criminal case. Jaime’s friendship with her best friend Linda is endearing, full of playfulness and bashfulness. Jared and Randy are key supporting characters, and the conversations between the foursome is laced with humour. During moments of unlocking the case, their unique attributes serve as a building block for them to work as an effective unit. The two sources who help the ladies in the case adds a layer of progressiveness and is refreshing. Finally, this story also addresses themes of overcoming doubts and embracing the present. Overall, it is a satisfying read, and I ended it with a smile on my face.
I received a copy of this short story from the author and voluntarily posting this review.
