The organization of the exercises in this book is excellent. It starts with checkmates in one arranged by the piece delivering the final check. Then it moves on to simple tactics: gain a rook, gain a bishop, gain a queen, … Then checkmate in two, followed by more tactics. The 1306 exercises are in five stages. The first stage is suited to those new to the game. By the time the readers get to stage five, they should have a grasp of most common tactical ideas and mating patterns. I’m USCF A Class, and I’ve faltered on about 5% of those in stages four and five.
