When she accidentally peels the covers off of her family secrets, Tyese, known for reserved and quiet, must rise up to lead her friends and family in a war against an ancient evil, all the while battling the ghosts from her past, her changing identity and fighting for the future of all those she holds dear.
After all, it's not just anyone who can be The Alpha, even if she never wanted to be anything else but human.
In 2002, Phebe Yawson volunteered her services to a non-profit in Ghana, West Africa after graduating from DeVry. In 2015, she relocated back to America to raise her family. Now able to pursue her dreams, she spends her days with her husband and kids and her nights with her pen. Phebe is now an award winning author and poet.
This novella was a mix of fantasy and coming-of-age. Tyese is graduating from high school and finding out who she is in a tremendous, extraordinary way (I won't say more, as I don't want to give away any spoilers). She also learns of some rather important and life-altering secrets her family has kept from her.
This novella is fast-paced (at time whip-lash fast), YA fantasy full of surprises and twists. A great story for teens and adults who love strong characters with a huge dose of fantasy!
I enjoyed this story of Tyese, who graduates from high school and soon finds out her entire life is not what she thought it was. Yawson has created a cool fantasy world, complete with a magical artifact, feuding families, shifters, and of course plenty of good and evil.
I loved the focus on family. I especially liked Tyese’s Gammy and the relationship between the two of them.
This is a lot of story packed into novella form! I’d have liked more space for character development and action—however, I did enjoy this fast-moving read.
Ties that bind also cut deep! Author Yawson delivers a complicated and interesting family dynamic in this coming-of-age tale of a young woman as she comes into her ancient and awesome powers. Centuries-old supernatural feuds blast into our present day, requiring our reluctant heroine to mature quickly to save her loved ones. Including those she's only just met.
The book ends with a call-to-arms as the family prepares for the cataclysmic battle sure lead off the next installment of the series. This reader would have preferred, however, to experience a sense of closure for this book's narrative arc. Though characters enjoy great triumphs and endure debilitating losses, many of their insights, reflections and applications are glossed over or simply non-existent. Personal preferences suggest much of the dialogue ought to have been streamlined into an alternate form of exposition, to prevent long segments of dialogue from obscuring pertinent and interesting story details.
Our author has laid a foundation for enjoyable storytelling. This reader looks forward to her continuing to refine and strengthen her craft, her conflicts and her characterizations as the series progresses.
I had no idea what I would find insie She Cried Wolf. I was thrilled to discover everything I enjoy about a good YA fantasy story. This tales has it all- characters with real emotions, a believable heroine, and an imaginative plot that left me crying for more. Phage Yawson is a very promising new author and I expect many more thrilling stories from her.
Thrilled and honoured to have won a copy of She Cried Wolf, I nonetheless dove in with limited expectations simply because I rarely read either young adult literature or fantasy. As they say, though, Phebe Yawson had me at hello, or should I say at a rainy graduation day. Immediately, Yawson sets the scene, introduces us to her main character Tyese, and pulls us flying through the pages. Tyese has been raised by her grandmother along with Tavaris, a cousin; a not uncommon situation. But things are not as they seem on the surface. Her mother is distant, her father is lost, but a monstrous secret lies behind the family’s pain. And Tyese is stronger — much stronger — than she thinks. While Yawson’s writing style is deceptively smooth and simple, she employs the perfect words to evoke emotions and describe scenes. She also (unlike many fantasy/paranormal writers) manages to restrain herself to a specific set of creatures, allowing for the suspension of disbelief. Beasts do not mix with vampires, thank goodness. Among the bits I loved: “Her howl of victory reverberated through the house and echoed out into the woods. More howls joined hers from the beasts the witch had summoned, fading as they fled into the distance.” There are a few spots that require a little attention, but these are minor. In all, Phebe Yawson has created a novella of roaring pace and true human feeling, conflict, and power.
She Cried Wolf is an amazing read of good vs. evil! It’s so much more than a shape-shifter story. There are twists and turns throughout! Tyese learns of who she is and what she’s capable of and you find yourself cheering her on!!
There are so many great lines in this book! I don’t want to give any spoilers so I’ll share the one line that not only gives Tyese hope, but as you read it, it gives you hope. “You have everything you need within you.”
I can NOT recommend this book enough. I can NOT wait for the second book.
Ms. Yawson created two engaging and likable characters in Tyese and Tavaris. It’s hard to review the first book of a series on the plot and characters’ arc because there are so much more to come. However, the author has started with an interesting premise and had made the reader care about these young people. I’m looking forward to the next adventure and hoping to get more in-depth development in the plot and the cast. Good job!
