These books are always fantastic - and now there's going to be a Netflix series? I'm a little nervous for the voice-acting...

The Hilda books just keep getting better! Hilda's character is great, we love her free thinking, independent personality, the way she is kind and helps tiny creatures, her outdoors-y-ness, her blue hair and stick legs and the way she does what she thinks is right without caring what others think.
In this episode she has an adventure with her mum and deer/fox pet inside a mountain of trolls. There is lots of excitement and action and some references to Greek mythology. The end has a very interesting twist and Oh no it's a two parter and I don't think the second half has been written yet! Tenterhooks all round!

Ah, so the two parter starts with Hilda lying to her mother about her whereabouts. Because her adventuring had been curtailed, she had been increasingly lying about her mother by saying that she was either out with David or Frida, both of whom are from the Sparrows. (I wished that Luke Pearson had expanded more on their friendship and adventures, the same way that the TV series had. Can't have everything, I guess :) )
Hilda breaking more and more of her mum's rules led to her getting grounded. In an attempt to see the fireworks for the bird parade, Hilda and her mother get pulled through the cracks and were dropped into the middle of a troll cave.
On re-reading, it makes a lot of sense why the troll "mother" felt that Hilda was more troll than human: she craved the feeling of being free, adventuring, and running around with no limits. But as a mother, I understood Hilda's mum's perspective too: it's ridiculously scary not knowing where your child is at any one time, and when your child is free-spirited, and doesn't keep her word, any wonder Hilda's mother had been attempting to erect boundaries that neither were accustomed to.

Božííííííí! Jako vždy! Tentokrát to bylo i hodně napínavé a přišlo mi, že Luke Pearson se posunul dál v tom, co se týká dynamičnosti příběhu vyjádřeného přes obrázky :D Nedokážu to nějak lépe popsat, ale zdálo se mi, že to mělo mnohem větší akci, napětí a spád. Supr! :)) Už se těším na Hildičku číslo 4!

Oh, this one was adorable! A whole bunch of characters from previous books make appearances which is a lot of fun. This time, Hilda's mum gets dragged along on her adventure. They get lost inside troll mountain and are chased by a big two-headed troll. Both Mum and Hilda get scared at different points and comfort the other. Unlike the other books in the series, this one ends with a twist and a "to be continued". I can't wait for the next book!

Hilda nám jde do puberty - to byla asi první věc, která mě po přečtení tohoto dílu napadla. Opakované spory s matkou, ještě větší potřeba Hildy se vymezovat vůči svému okolí a pak ten konec (kdy sakra vyjde další díl ?!)
Vrací se trošku poetika první dvou dílů, toho města tam zase až tolik není (byť scéna s piknikem je skvělá). A především se tu objevují aluze na předchozí příběhy - bez jakéhokoliv vysvětlování, takže bez znalosti předchozích příběhů to raději nečíst. A ten konec - naprosto čistokrevný cliffhanger, u kterého zůstaly děti s pusou dokořán a pak začaly vymýšlet teorie, jak se to vůbec mohlo Hildě stát. No, však uvidíte.
Pobaví i grafické odkazy na práci Philippa Rice, což je Pearsonova životní partnerka.
Asi to není ta nejlepší Hilda (u mě to zatím vyhrává Hilda a černý pes), ale i tak je to skvělé. A už chci ten další díl :-( Luke Pearson má na svém Twitteru (@thatlukeperson) ukázku ze začátku, je to jen jedna stránka, ale i tak po dočtení stojí za to na to mrknout.
Kontext: Hned jak knížka dorazila (ještě že to PPL jezdí i v sobotu), tak se na mě děti vrhly, že to musíme přečíst. Usmlouvala jsem to, že si nejdřív musím dočíst ten předchozí příběh, ale pak jsem skončila obložená dětmi a přečetli jsme to na jeden zátah celé.

Hilda je prostě kouzelná. Vždy, když si ji čtu, přistihnu se s takovým připitoměle zasněným úsměvem. Zahání chmury - aspoň v té chvilce, kdy čtete. Ale vzhledem k předchozím knihám, které se mi líbily o malinko víc, dávám Kamennému lesu prozatím 4 *, třeba přihodím hvězdičku po dalším navazujícím dílu. Na ten už se fakt těším, protože takový cliffhanger na konec, to je skoro trestuhodné, že člověk musí čekat na pokračování dalších několik dlouhých měsíců.

Reread 2018: there’s a lot more drama between Hilda and her mother in this compared to the Netflix series. Also, her friends are included much more, not only in the plots, but Hilda’s own world-view and adventure-sense.

I'm a big fan of the Hildafolk series and this is perhaps my least favorite. Not sure why. Hilda and her mom are fighting about Hilda's adventures. Her mom wants her to not go on crazy adventures. Hilda won't take no for an answer. Things are pretty conflicty and then they wind up on an adventure together. And it's pretty intense having Hilda and her mom in danger together. Dealing with relationship stuff and danger. This one's a cliff-hanger and the end is kind of creepy. I don't know. Just not as cute and silly as some of the other ones. Not that that's a bad thing...

Hoe lang is het geleden dat er een nieuwe strip voor kinderen is gelanceerd die ook nog eens goed, mooi, spannend, fantasierijk en grappig is? Veel te lang, maar hier is hij dan toch, Hilda!
Hilda is een energiek blauwharig meisje dat woont in een magische wereld, een wereld waarin wezens als trollen, onzichtbare mini-wezentjes, houtmannetjes en rare vogels leven. Ze woont samen met haar moeder, Tontu en Takkie (een hertenvosje) in een stadje tussen de bergen en ze maakt altijd wat mee. Te vaak. Als op een avond haar moeder weer eens aan een gedekte tafel zonder Hilda zit vindt ze het welletjes. Tijd vergeten, horloge stuk, even een stukje lopen, ben zo terug… Hilda’s moeder gelooft alle uitvluchten niet meer en vindt het tijd om in te grijpen, huisarrest! Op dat moment begint dit avontuur waarin ze samen met haar moeder in een andere wereld belandt en ze samen terug naar huis moeten zien te komen.
Luke Pearson (1987, Groot Brittannië) is zowel de tekenaar als scenarist van Hilda en een zeer getalenteerde illustrator en cartoonist. Hij tekent voor tijdschriften, kranten (o.a. The New Yorker, The Guardian, Süddeutsche Zeitung), ontwerpt boekcovers en meer. Hilda is zijn bekendste werk en hiermee heeft hij precies de juiste touch te pakken. Hij tekent in klare lijn met prachtig warme ingetogen kleuren en de personages, verhalen en stijl staan dichtbij jonge lezers (zeg vanaf 8 jaar tot ‘inpikken en zelf lezen’ als volwassene). Al lezend valt het rustige tempo en het prettige taalgebruik op. In het Nederlandse taalgebied een strip die nog vraagt om ontdekt te worden, in de Engelstalige en Franstalige landen is zij een groot succes. In Groot-Brittannië ontving hij een paar jaar terug al, terecht, de Young People’s Comic Award.
Een minpunt dat eigenlijk een pluspunt is, dit is deel 5 en dat is niet het beste boek om Hilda mee te beginnen. Het leukst is om ze allemaal te lezen en zo haar wereld langzaam te zien groeien, want al bladerend in de vorige delen zie je haar één voor één vrienden maken die in dit album terugkomen. Dat geeft zo’n fijn veilig gevoel als kind om al je favorieten waar je je net aan hebt gehecht te zien terugkomen en weten dat Hilda niet alleen staat in een spannend avontuur. Daarnaast heeft in dit deel haar moeder ook een grote rol die zowel voor ouder als kind voor heel herkenbare typische situaties en reacties zorgt, met perfect bijpassende lichaamstaal, heerlijk om naar te kijken. Hilda is fysiek gezien een meisje, maar het is een verademing dat het daar dan ook bij blijft. Op deze manier is ze vooral een kind dat zich niet in een stereotype laat vangen… ze is vreselijk ondernemend, verzint van alles, is grappig, lief, ondeugend en leeft in een geheimzinnige wonderwereld.
Al met al een fijne strip, met laagjes en humor en goed verzorgd uitgegeven. En net als je denkt dat alles toch tot een goed einde is gekomen, is er een onverwachte wending en een heuse cliffhanger… In het volgende album begint het past echt!

I was worried about reading this latest installment of the, rightly-acclaimed, Hilda series. The four that had come before had set a high benchmark with their pacy, multi-layered mythic narrative and easy humour. There was something touching in Hilda's natural connection to the landscape and the fey folk and although I was really sad to see her and her mother leave that liminal space between the wilderness and the city of Trolberg in Hilda and the Bird Parade, I was happy that the connection to the magical remained.
I should affirm then, that nothing is lost in this addition to the Pearson canon and more is gained. Nothing about the Netflix adaptation or novella versions of the book have stopped the creator from losing himself in the steadily-growing world he has created. There is no laurel-resting to be found here: instead we have a plot that focuses on the friction between Hilda and her mother. We are presented then, with a mirrored, liminal space, that desires for the developing youth to become independent of a parent's comfort. A bildungsroman of sorts.
In Hilda and the Stone Forest, mother and daughter find themselves within the belly of a mountain amongst the trolls - a diverse and highly ambiguous race of creatures. Some are violent and angry, others caring and thoughtful and Hilda and her mother must find a way to compromise their differences if they are to escape.
Although some of the emotional resonances here felt a little empty and I was left with more questions that answers as to the plot, this is a jam-packed graphic novel that begs for more to be told. Fortunately the story's second half will be with us soon with Hilda and the Mountain King. This first half doesn't disappoint and closes with the best end to a Hilda story to date.

От я й дочитала останній на разі комікс про Гільду (Люк Пірсон безсовісно завершив його на "далі буде").
Наша героїня Гільда — це мила жвава синьоволоса дівчинка, яку хлібом не годуй, дай де-небудь полазити і знайти пригоди на свою дупу. Вона мешкає разом зі своєю молодою мамою, яка працює вдома, та домашнім улюбленцем — невеличкою лисичкою з ріжками. За порогом їхньої хатинки красивий і чудернацький світ, густо заселений щонайхимернішими створіннями, з якими Гільда вміє добре знаходити спільну мову. З третього випуску ця маленька сім'я перебирається жити до містечка, оточеного кам'яними мурами. Спочатку я відчула трохи розчарування з цього приводу, але наша Гільда, по-перше, повсякчас вибирається за ті мури (це постійне джерело конфліктів між Гільдою і її мамою, яка переживає за безпеку своєї донечки), а по-друге, знаходить чудернацьких створінь і нових друзів і в самому містечку.
Ця мальована історія, хоч і створена британцем, має якийсь такий скандинавський вайб — холодні, але красиві пейзажі, міфічні створіння, приглушена синьо-вишнево-вохриста кольорова гама, люди завжди вбрані тепло (Гільда зазвичай носить светр, шалик, берет, чобітки), навіть візерунки на обкладинці першого випуску нагадують ті, що мають скандинавські светри. Але я не маю нічого проти — все це працює на атмосферу. Сподіваюся, скоро ми матимемо всі випуски українською.

I was convinced Ben Hatke was my most favorite kids graphic novelist... but he and Luke Pearson are going to have to brawl for the title at this point or it will have to just be a tie. I absolutely adore Hilda, the art, the humor, the magical characters, the mum,, the adventure, the story, the dialogue, the color scheme, the variety of frame style, orientation and shape, the busting out of frames, just... everything.

Cracking take with Hilda’s mum being dragged, literally, into the middle of the adventure with some angry trolls, some less angry trolls and a by now familiar cast of Hilda’s oddball friends and mythical creatures. Hilda is awesome and the mother daughter dynamic is recognizably fraught and loving. So much fun with a cliffhanger ending!

Třetí Hilda. A je stejně boží jako ty předchozí. Zábavné, napínavé (a ano, i trochu infantilní) čtení, které si doporučuji vychutnat plnými doušky.

Volver a vivir una aventura con Hilda siempre me aporta mucha felicidad. En esta última entrega en castellano, Hilda se enfrenta a su madre. Ésta, harta de que su hija desaparezca de casa constantemente, la castiga sin éxito. Debido a un desliz de Tontu, acabarán juntas en un extraño lugar, del que les costará salir con vida.

The hardback of this was the most pleasurable reading experience. The colour theme, the thicc paper, the cosy drawings and the plot that is slightly different to the Netflix show made this worth reading even though I've seen the show.

Jag tycker så rysligt mycket om böckerna om Hilda. Det här är en fin skildring av relationen mellan Hilda och hennes mamma. Hur det ibland liksom blir fel fast att det inte är någons egentliga avsikt. Slutar ju också med en riktig cliffhanger!!!

Hilda gets in trouble for not being honest with her mom about her exploits. They get in a tiff over it, and eventually that leads to them both getting lost in a strange cavern full of trolls both mean and kind. Can they find their way out together?
Although the mother daughter tiff thing is quite normal, I didn't really like it. Up until this book the two have had a really good relationship. It's sad to see it get a little rocky. The ending of this is a cliffhanger with a really weird twist. So weird. Not my favorite Hilda book.
Notes on content: No language issues or sexual content. Some violence threatened but only magical creatures are harmed and they seem to be able to rebound well.
