The Devil you know isn’t always better.

When a U.S. Senator’s son turns up dead in New York, a Russian ambassador is suspected of murder. But with diplomatic immunity, the U.S. has no recourse—at least no legal recourse.

Led by Brady Hawk and Alex Duncan, the former Firestorm team is reunited to help track down a killer and get justice. But they find a dark secret and a far-reaching conspiracy that not only endangers their own lives but also the lives of millions.

Hawk and Alex enter a high-stakes race to stop a potential disaster and gain justice outside the confines of the law.

THE FIRST SIGNS that I might like writing -- and that I might be slightly competitive -- appeared when my year two (or first grade) teacher, Mrs. Holland, asked my class to write and illustrate our day. Mine read like this: “The Red team beat the Blue team, 1 to nil. And I won.” The next 47 entries covered my exploits on the soccer pitch while growing up in Ipswich, England.

In South Carolina as a teenager, my dad told me that I could get paid to watch sports provided I could write about it. Sounded easy enough and by the time I was 16, I landed a job at my town’s daily newspaper and had a column on Major League Baseball players from our area. I also covered my first riot there at a sporting event -- and it’s safe to say I was smitten with journalism.

After graduating from one of the best journalism schools in the country, I took a job as a sports editor in South Georgia and learned firsthand about the passion of high school sports in rural America. I thought I knew before, but I didn’t. This was another world.

I also had the opportunity to cover major sporting events like the Olympic Games, the World Series, the Super Bowl, and the Final Four. It was a thrill!

But nothing was as thrilling to me as uncovering the truth in investigative assignments. I once broke a story about a prominent southern football team’s NCAA violation -- and found out the violating coach had committed suicide only a few months earlier. The story won a national writing award and stoked my desire to write about these issues. It made me realize that the sports world was just another fantastic backdrop for drama.

After writing non-fiction books with athletes, for athletes, and ghost writing for many others, I decided to enter the world of fiction writing. It had been something I wanted to do but never found the time. So, I made the time--and had a blast in the process.

I’m not out to become the next Faulkner or Hemingway -- I’m just out to tell a good story. I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I enjoy writing them!

New Beginnings

Brady Hawk and Alex Duncan are starting off married life with a honeymoon cut short by their boss, former senator J.D. Blunt. Firestorm is gone and Blunt heads a new group, the Phoenix Foundation, with the same mission statement but a closer alliance with the CIA. Their first assignment starts out in Venice to steal intelligence from a Russian oligarch, becomes a search for the killer of a prominent politician’s son and quickly evolves into an international conspiracy and the unearthing of an organization more dangerous and wide-ranging than the recently destroyed Al Hasib.

Characters from previous hooks in this series, both friend and foe, make appearances that twist the plot into more positions than a yoga instructor on a caffeine high. The action is fast and unrelenting, jumping from Venice to Washington to New York to Cuba to Miami and back. It will leave you breathless until the very end. It seems the team’s new beginning will continue with a new enemy. The next few books should be very interesting and I can’t wait!

There is no way to describe getting pulled into this authors 21 book story. Exhilarating to be able to read one book right after another and get deeply involved in these characters lives, lives and history and the police stories evolving around them. There are more following another character but I needed a break and are involved in some other stories before I follow the rest of the saga. Read these and enjoy. I read most in one day.

Firestorm has been disbanded and Hawk and Alex are enjoying downtime, after getting married. Called back by Blunt to spearhead a new team called Phoenix, they investigate the murder of a Senator's son. What they find is a conspiracy that again puts the president in danger and a race to stop another terrorist attack.

Keep your eyes on your enemy. They're right there!

Close calls is not quite what this story is about. It is more like you have one second before you are next to die. Exciting with every turning page.

Great thriller series

When asked to look into the murder of a politician's son, Hawk and crew discover a lot more than any of them bargained for. With action, suspense, and complex situations, it's not a series to be missed.
I would recommend this book, series, and author.

Another good one

I’m enjoying reading about Alex and Hawk being married. I hate romance novels so I’m glad that these novels still include action and intrigue.

AGAINST ALL ODDS. by R J Patterson. Brady Hawk. S
I love the cover, the archways, the shadows, awaiting for us, as though danger is lurking behind each, and adventure to begin.
Honeymoon for Hawk and Alex, in Venice, when Blunt request, a short mission, they may not have a chance like this again, as Alex says, how can they say no. In Washington DC, Blunt telling Alex and Hawk they will be part of a new agency, The Phoenix Foundationn, acting as ghosts for their missions. The first is Thaxton a son dead, by an assassin, father made a call to Blunt find out who, and eliminate, there are Russian ties involved. They know the method and manner how the assasins are contacted, by pulling that string, they will find out who. Blunt wants a dead Russia , not who ordered. The case comes full circle, and was a surprise, who knew he was capible of doing it. They now have the begining of the next, a list, and the name . A page turner, that.begins in the muddy canal, right to the end. Another must read in this series, that readers will love.
