"பூமாதேவி கை கூப்பி சூரியனை வணங்கினாள். சூரியன் தன் மெல்லிய காலைக் கதிர்களால் அவள் தலையை வருடிவிட்டு என்ன வேண்டும் என்பது போல் நோக்கினான். பூமாதேவி சூரியனின் கண்கள் கேட்ட கேள்விக்குதன் கண்களாலேயே பதில் சொன்னாள். ‘பாரம் அதிகமாகிவிட்டது. தாங்க முடியவில்லை. உங்களைப் போன்றோர் உதவி செய்தால்தான் நான் நிம்மதியாய்ச் சுழல முடியும்” என்று மெல்லிய வேதனையோடு பேசினாள். ‘என்ன பாரம்? ஜனத்தொகை அதிகமாவதா?” ‘ஜனத்தொகை அதிகமாவது ஒரு விஷயமே அல்ல. இது போன்ற மூன்று மடங்கு ஜனங்களை என்னால் தாங்க முடியும். ஆனால் ஜனங்கள் செய்கின்ற பாவ பாரத்தைத்தான் என்னால் தாங்க முடியவில்லை.” ‘ஜனங்கள் பாவம் செய்வதற்கு என்ன காரணம்?” ‘ஜனத்தொகைப் பெருக்கம் காரணம். ஒருவரை ஒருவர் முந்த வேண்டும் என்ற வெறி ஜனத்தொகை பெருக்கத்தால் ஏற்பட்டு வருகிறது. தன்னை முன்னிறுத்திக் கொள்ளுகின்ற ஆசை¸ பேராவல் ஜனத்தொகைப் பெருக்கத்தால் அதிகமாகிறது. எனவே பாபங்களும் அதிகமாகின்றன.”

‘முன்னேற்றத்திற்கு தவிப்பது பாபத்தைச் சேர்க்குமா பூமாதேவி?” சூரியன் அன்பொழுகக் கேட்டான். ‘ஆமாம்¸ வெற்றி என்பது எளிதில் கிடைக்கக் கூடிய விஷயமில்லை. வெற்றி என்பது ஒரு வேளை கிடைக்க முடியாது போனால் என்ன செய்வது என்கிற ஏக்கம்¸ தாபம்¸ குறுக்கு வழியைத் தேட முயற்சி செய்கிறது. அந்தத் தாபத்தால் குறுக்கு வழியை முயற்சி செய்ய பாபங்கள் அதிகமாகின்றன. அது மட்டுமில்லை சூர்யதேவா” சூரியனை நிமிர்ந்து பார்த்துக்கொண்டே பூமாதேவி பேசினாள்."

கர்ணன் என்றொரு கதாபாத்திரத்தின் வழியாக அன்றைய கால சூழலோடு இன்றைய அரசியல், சமூகம் சார்ந்த பல விஷயங்களை மனம் திறந்து பகிர்ந்து இருக்கிறார். வரலாற்று சிறப்புமிக்க இந்த கதை படிக்கவும் சுவாரசியமாகவும் சுவை மிகுந்ததாகவும் இருப்பது இந்நூலில் சிறப்பு.

"எல்லாப் பிரிவும் அபத்தமானது. அற்பத்தனமானது. இங்குள்ள மனிதர்களின் கோபமும், குரோதமும் வேர் இல்லாதவை. வெறுமே மேல்புத்தியில் தளும்பி நிற்பவை. அண்ட பேரண்டத்தின் பிரமாண்டத்தை உணரும் பொழுது, இங்குள்ள மனிதர்கள் புழுக்களாக, புழுக்களின் புழுக்களாகத் தெரிகிறார்கள். அவர்களுக்கு கர்வம் இருப்பதும், காதல் இருப்பதும், காமம் இருப்பதும் சிரிப்பாய் இருக்கின்றன. அந்த நிலை தெரிய வந்தால் எந்தப்பிரிவும் நிலையற்றது என்று தெரியும். கற்பிதமானது என்று புரியும். அப்படிப்புரிய மறுபடி மறுபடி பிறக்கவேண்டும்."

About the author

Balakumaran was born in Pazhamarneri village near Thirukattupalli in Thanjavur district in 1946. As a child, he was highly inspired by his mother, who was a Tamil scholar and a Siromani in Sanskrit, used verses of Sangam and other ancient literature to motivate him when ever he was emotionally down. This created a deep interest in Tamil literature which made literature his passion. His first stories were published in a literary magazine called ‘Ka-Sa-Da-Tha-Pa-Ra’ and for which he was also a founding member, a self-anointed militant literary journal that had been launched with a mission to blaze new trails in modernist literature.

He has also contributed to Tamil periodicals such as Kalki, Ananda Vikatan, Saavi and Kumudam. Later he became a famous Tamil writer, author of over 200 novels, 100 short stories, and dialogue/screenplay writer for over 14 films. His writings are noted for a distinct philosophical and religious tone. He is fondly called 'Ezhuthu Sithar' by his fans. He is a disciple of "Sri Yogi Ram Surath Kumar".

In his many novels he shows immense interest in enlightenment. He is considered as "Maanasiga Guru" for many individuals, who are in search of the formless almighty. His lucid but powerful expressions of man-woman relationship and human-God union is a tribute to mankind.

Balakumaran's Karnanin Kadhai is one of the many takes on POV for Mahabharatha. However, what sets this apart is it ascertains a cosmic significance for the entire war to rid the world of Kshatriyas. This was a new take.

I liked the way the book took Surya's view point to decide to fight on the other side of Krishna (not against) and the known stories of loyalty. It also gave a peek into how he turned the Anga kingdom into a prosperous place by his karma.

The disadvantage of the foregone conclusion is evident in some of the episodes. Like when Duryodan asks Karna for his advice, the son of Surya is adviced to allow the war to happen - which glorifies Karna. Also weird was the portrayal of Duryodan himself whom Karnan seems to admire in the beginning and later feels constrained around him.

This is a one man show - beautifully written nonetheless.

இந்திய துணைக்கண்டத்தில், புராணங்களில் இது போன்றதொரு நட்பு வேறெங்கும் விவரிக்கப்பட்டதில்லை. கர்ணன் துரியனின் நட்பு செஞ்சோற்று கடனால் ஏற்பட்டதன்று. இந்த நட்பு அதிகம் போற்றப்படாமல் போய் விட்டது. இருவரும் அதிர்ஷ்டமில்லாதவர்கள். கர்ணனின் ஆற்றலும், துரியனின் அன்பான குணமும் கடைசிவரை பாராட்டு பெறாமல் போய்விட்டன.
துரியோதனனும் கர்ணனும் தத்தமது நட்பையே தர்மமாய் கொண்டவர்கள்.
கர்ணனில்லா துரியனை கற்பனை செய்து பார்ப்பதும் கொடூரமாய் உள்ளது !

தான் தானம் செய்ய முதல் விதையென துரியனையே கைக்காட்டுகிறான் கர்ணன். அன்று பெரும் அரங்கில் அதிரதன் தன்னை பெருமையோடு "கர்ணா" என்று ஆரத்தழுவிய நேரத்தில் "இவன் தேரோட்டியின் மகனா" என்று ஏற்பட்ட சலனத்திற்கு இடையே கர்ணனை ஆதரித்தவன் துரியனாவான். கர்ணனுக்கு அங்க தேசத்தை தானமளித்து பெரும் அரசியல் சிக்கலுள் சிக்கினான். அணிகள் உருவாயின. நிர்ணயிக்கப்பட்டது குருஷேத்திரத்திர்க்கான களம்.
பானுமதியோடு கர்ணன் சொக்கட்டான் ஆடுகையில், துரியனை கண்ட பானுமதி மரியாதை செலுத்த எழுந்து திரும்ப, தோல்வியை மறைக்க அவள் செல்வதாய் எண்ணி பானுமதியின் மார்பை மறைத்திருந்த முத்துச்சரத்தை கர்ணன் வெடுக்கென பிடித்திழுக்க, அது அறுந்து முத்துக்கள் சிதற, எதேச்சையாய் உள்நுழைந்தும் "எடுக்கவா கோர்க்கவா ?" என்று இருவர் மேலும் நம்பிக்கையை வெளிப்படுத்தியவன் துரியன்.
மரணம் தன்னை நெருங்கும் என்னும் நிலையிலும் ஒருவர் மற்றவரை விடவில்லை.
நூறு சகோதரர்களும் மடிவர் என்று தெரிந்தும் கர்ணனின் சொல் கேட்டு போரில் இறங்கினான் துரியன்.
பாண்டவர்கள் சகோதரர்கள் என்றறிந்தும், தான் மடிய போவது சாஸ்வதம் என்று அறிந்தும் சேனையை வழி நடத்தினான் கர்ணன்.

கர்ணனின் கணைகள் துரியனுக்காகவே அம்பிலிருந்து புறப்பட்டன.
துரியனின் சேனையில் அவனுக்காக போரிட்ட ஒரே வீரன் என்று கர்ணனை மட்டுமே காட்ட முடியும்.
பூமி தாயோடு சூரியன் கொண்ட நட்பே உயிர்களுக்கு பிரதானம். கர்ணனும் நட்பில் சோரம் போகவில்லை. "செஞ்சோற்று கடன்" என்ற சொற்தொடர்கள் கர்ணனையே வாழ்வுள்ளவரை நினைவுக்கூற வைக்கும் ! _/\_

Though most of the things in the book are know things, but the presentation is good. The philosophy that rides around the book and portraying the importance of Karna in Mahabharata war is the take away of the book.

Balakumaran sir had his touch in the book while describing the internal feelings of Karna while he finds our the real reason for his birth. The fact on why Kauravas was hated and things around Pandavas being celebrated + it is only if both sides are equal in some means there is possibility of such big an event is well explained in the book.

It is not the number of people who increase the weightage on earth, but the number of unethical , arrogant people out numbering and making others vulnerable or powerless that increases weight on earth, and only in such instance equilibrium tries to get back through different means is well explained. This could well be connected with current occurring and situation.

Go for the book, you will like it if you are fan of balakumaran sir. For others u will have a different presentation of situation of Mahabharata war.

நான் சிறு வயதில் இருந்து வாசித்து இரசித்த கதைகளில் ஒன்று மஹாபாரதம். எத்தனையோ பதிப்பகங்களினால் வெளியிடப்பட்ட பலதரப்பட்ட பரிமாணங்களில் இக்கதையை வாசித்தும் ஒவ்வொரு முறையும் முதல் முறையாய் உணர வைக்கும் ஓர் சிறந்த படைப்பு.
அதில் ஒரு பாத்திரமான கர்ணணை மையப்படுத்தி பாலகுமாரன் அவர்களால் எழுதப்பட்ட நாவல் இது.

For me, Karnan is the most interesting character after Shikandi of course.

I love the way Balakumaran written Karnan. Karnan is one of the conflicted character because of his birth, upbringing, education, most importantly caste. Balakumaran used the cast dynamic so well.

There is no reason for pity in suffering but when comes to cast hierarchy. It's completely unfair game.

P.S. Justice is not same for everyone but it is try to be equal to everyone. It's a very fresh perspective to Karnan from the words of Balakumaran.

I thoroughly enjoyed it.

கர்ணனின் கதை – பாலகுமாரன்

மகாபாரதம் நாம் அனைவரும் அறிந்த ஒரு மாபெரும் இதிகாசம். ஆனால் கர்ணனைப் பற்றி புராணங்களில் விரிவாக பேசப்பட்டதாக உணர முடியாது.
பாலகுமாரன் அவர்களின் எழுத்தில், கர்ணனின் பார்வை (perspective) நமக்கு ஆழமாக வெளிப்படுகிறது.

பூமாதேவி சூரியனிடம்,
“என்னால் இந்த பாரத்தை தாங்க முடியவில்லை. நீங்கள் ஏதாவது செய்ய வேண்டும்”
என்று கேட்கிறாள்.

சூரியனுக்கும் குந்தி தேவிக்கும் பிறந்த மகன்தான் கர்ணன்.
குந்தி தேவி, ஒரு ரிஷி கூறிய மந்திரத்தை “இது வேலை செய்யுமா?” என்று சோதிக்க நினைத்ததின் விளைவாகவே அந்தக் குழந்தை பிறக்கிறது.

இந்த நூலில் எனக்கு மிகவும் பிடித்த விஷயம் ��ன்னவென்றால்,
கர்ணனின் உணர்வுகளுக்கு மதிப்பு கொடுத்து,
ஒரு மனிதன் எவ்வாறு உணர்வான் என்பதை
கர்ணனின் பார்வையிலிருந்து நமக்கு அழகாக புரியவைக்கிறார் பாலகுமாரன்.

என் அம்மாவின் மிகவும் பிடித்த எழுத்தாளர் இவர்.
என் சிறுவயதில், அவர் எழுதிய புத்தகங்களை அம்மா வாசிப்பதை நான் பார்த்திருக்கிறேன்.
குறிப்பாக உடையார் நூலை அவர் வாசித்த காட்சிகள் இன்னும் நினைவில் உள்ளது.

இப்போது அவர் எனக்கும் மிகவும் விருப்பமான எழுத்தாளர்களில் ஒருவராகி விட்டார்.
அவருடைய எழுத்துகளை மேலும் மேலும் வாசிக்க
ஆவலுடன் காத்திருக்கிறேன்.

I have read many a times about Karna from various books and authors and was curious to know what Balakumaran sir had to say of My superhero. In a way it was a disappointing that the book was exact text of the Tamil movie on Karnan the scenes even dialogues to large extent. There is nothing new for folks who have watched the movie.

A Great character seen from a different angle !

An Excellent Story about the Great character Karnan of Mahabharata. The author throws more light on the positive aspects of the character Karnan. He explains certain thing in the way that nobody would have evert thought of. Even though one would have read about Mahabharata war many a times, reading about from the angle of one great character such as Kartnann, throws enormous light on our little knowledge. This story is written in a wonderful manne with due authenticity towards certain philosophies. Very enjoyable !
