“THE BEST MAN” part one! Batman and Catwoman decide it might be better to elope rather than go through some big, stodgy wedding ceremony, but no sooner do they put their marriage on the fast track than The Joker appears! And when The Joker kidnaps the Caped Crusader, will he give his old foe a piece of his mind or bash in his brains?
I should have never delayed this volume, I saw the title The Wedding, and I thought "No more romance for me." it was getting too cheesy and that's not really why you read Batman in the first place. The entire volume was literally fire though, first moron in chief Booster Gold, Dumb and Dumber 3 Booster Gold screws with the timeline as a "gift" for Batman. And then the crazy in chief Joker, decides to make the entire wedding about himself. It couldn't be better. But honestly why does Batman tolerate him? So he is against killing, The Joker is a mass murderer that even Batman himself understand will only ever stop when he is dead, if he is threatening you to blow his own head off, guess what? He is finally giving you a way out of catching him long after his killing sprees has started!
I'm not necessarily glad Joker's been brought back to life at all (don't even get me started on there being multiple), but King does some very clever stuff here. The audacity of having Joker and Batman kneel in front of an altar together.
Not the way I see a one on one fight between Batman and the Joker going. This is more like an episode of Harley animated series. I cannot say there was anything I liked about this issue.
Well base simply on Joker's dialogue, this will be a 5 stars. But in story wise its a 2. Like WHAT THE HELL joker just killed almost a dozen people and not a single cop shows up also bats is getting soft on joker for some reason here.
HISHE: J: Pray with me, Batman. B: Ahh excuse me, you just killed this guys and you wanted me to kneel next you? Can I just arrest you right now and maybe we can do this praying stuff in Arkhams Cathedral section? J: Just humor me B: Nope *Throws batarang* J: *Joker dodge* *Bomb goes off* *Joker falls down* B: I knew it.
Yes, very good dialogue from Joker. Also, the whole church thing, praying, it worked for me. This issue was all Joker and Batman being his browning self. Plus, Catwoman at the end, dammit.
This was a great surprise for me, I've long felt like King was spinning his wheels until the actual wedding issue and thusly coming off as very hit or miss, but this was definately a hit. As someone who didn't read War of Jokes and Riddles because he was too busy and too poor for comics at the time, this was a great introduction to King's take on the Joker, who, with time, might just become my new favorite. This story had some of the best Joker comedy I've ever seen and also featured an unexpected and extemely welcome twist of Joker wanting to be Batman's best man instead of, what I thought would happen, him being mad that someone besides him would be so close to Bats. I know it's been the thing to do for the last few years, but I've long since grown tired of the "Joker is actually in love with Batman in a twisted sense" kind of stories. I know there are good ones out there, it's just been done to death in my eyes. But as I said, this is a different and really interesting direction and I can't wait to see where King goes with it.
Love the way Tom King writes the Joker. He is able to blend both comedy, tragedy and genuine horror within the writing of the character. I would kill (not really) to see a scene like this in a Batman movie or TV show.
It was scary, surprising, darkly hilarious and so good.
Weirdly, I wasn't able to hear Mark Hamill when I read this. When I read a Batman comic, in my head it's always Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill. I don't know if it's cause the characters feel a bit different, evolved even- or if it's cause the art just isn't growing on me. It's not bad per say, I just wish this script had been adapted by a different artist. That should be a thing. Multiple artists adapt the same comic script. Fun little experiment.
Anyway. Comic good. Joker really interesting. Tom King is a writer I can count on to deliver every single time. I can't emphasize that enough. I see his name on something, I know I'm gonna devour whatever he writes and feel satisfied.
That was f**king terrible people! Is that worth 4 or 5 stars? I think some of you are just jumping on the Joker bandwagon cause that was absolute crap! Batman did absolutely nothing to stop Joker!!! This comic was so off the mark for Batman and he was written like he was an idiot!
This was great. The whole thing takes place in one setting with not real action. Just great dialogue and character moments. Then we get the ending with Catwoman. Fantastic issue.
