There are three things you need to know about Rinna.

Firstly, she has been raised to fear Elmentants.
Secondly, her family, who rule over the eight clans of Nortland, has spent centuries burning all possible Elmentants in wicker cages, even girls as young as four years old.

About the author

Renske de Wolf was born in Heerlen, the Netherlands, on a cold Thursday in December 1987. She has been a lifelong writer and first began writing screenplays when she was 7 years old. An avid Oxford comma enthusiast, Renske has been an archaeologist, a salsa dancer, a stage actor, an ex-pat in Barcelona, and a university finalist for Strategic Business Plans. She was excited to become a whiskey connoisseur, until she sadly discovered she found whiskey, in fact, disgusting.

Renske currently resides in a small village near Eindhoven, the Netherlands. In her free time you can find her annoying her cats, dancing, reading a good book, or performing on stage with the International Theatre Collective Eindhoven. The King of Wolves was her first book. Her second book, The Smoke Wraiths, is expected on 25 October 2024.

This cover 🥰😍. It immediately pulled me towards this book.
And what I also really appreciated is that the writer is Dutch, but the book is only available in English. You have to dare!

Like with every fantasy book I first had to get used to all the terms, locations and infodump 🤣. But thankfully the story started quickly.
Rinna lives in a world where women are more like bridal gifts than human beings. It’s forbidden for women to read books. The horror! 😱
Rinna has a very special hobby. She is a falconer. How cool!
Unfortunately she also has the idea that she could be an Elmentant. This means she has some special powers. Elementants aren’t accepted in her world at all.

The story was nice written and really fascinating. It was a fast read, rough I do read a bit slower in English.
It was really exciting. There happened quite a lot in the book and it was never boring. And ofcourse there also was a little bit romance.
The end is closed, but I want more of this! I’m glad this is the start of a series 😁

It was exactly like I’d hoped it to be.

Wat een verhaal! Spannend, meeslepend en geen moment saai! Door Renske haar manier van schrijven werd ik het verhaal in gezogen en zag ik alles helemaal voor mij gebeuren. Wat een geweldige film zou dit zijn! De hele wereld is zo goed uitgewerkt en beschreven. Ik heb erg genoten van Rinna, het grote avontuur en de persoonlijke groei die ze doormaakt. En Daalzen en de wolven al net zo leuk. Zeker lezen! Ik kijk al uit naar het tweede boek!

De meeste Nederlandse auteurs geven eerst in het Nederlands uit, en pas daarna komt de Engelse vertaling. Maar Renske de Wolf deed het anders met The King of Wolves, het eerste deel van The Crowfield Chronicles. Dit Engelstalige boek gaat over Rinna – de wat verlegen dochter van de koning. Maar wanneer haar koninkrijk en kroon bedreigd worden, blijkt ze veel meer in haar mars te hebben dan ze ooit dacht…

The King of Wolves start meteen met actie: een man is gevangen genomen door bandieten in het gevaarlijke Crowfield Forest. En dan hoort hij de wolven aankomen. Dat zou niet moeten kunnen, want wolven zijn al tijden uitgestorven nadat de koning destijds, een voorouder van Rinna, ze heeft laten uitroeien. Maar de wolven komen dichterbij en vallen aan…

En daarna is het even gedaan met de actie. Na de proloog moest ik even in het boek komen – zoals vaker bij een fantasy serie moet de wereld geschetst worden voordat de actie begint. De volgende paar hoofdstukken zat ik er dus niet helemaal in, maar al snel weet The King of Wolves op een andere manier spannend te worden.

Rinna kan namelijk niet iedereen vertrouwen: er is een soort House of the Dragon-achtige intrige aan het hof. Naast de reguliere roddel en achterklap is er ook sprake van moord en verraad, en de spanning in The King of Wolves loopt weer op. Rinna is zelf eerst vrij afzijdig: als vrouw aan het hof heeft ze weinig keuze. Ze moet trouwen voor een alliantie – dat is de enige manier om zichzelf nuttig te maken. Maar wanneer haar familie wordt verraden, kan ze niet anders dan actie ondernemen.

Rinna is op het begin erg timide – bij gebrek aan een moeder luistert ze vooral naar haar tante hoe ze zich moet gedragen aan het hof. Haar tante is streng, maar ze is altijd als een moeder voor Rinna geweest. Maar zodra ze visioenen krijgt, begint ze uit haar schulp te kruipen en ook wat meer risico’s te nemen. Rinna is bang dat ze een Elmenant is – een gevaarlijk wezen met magische krachten. Maar Elmenants belanden op de brandstapel, dus ze is voorzichtig met deze informatie. In de bibliotheek – verboden terrein voor vrouwen – gaat Rinna op zoek naar antwoorden.

De zaken nemen een wending en al snel loopt alles uit de hand. Rinna leert wie echt loyaal aan haar zijn én ze leert haar eigen krachten kennen. Ze maakt een duidelijke karakterontwikkeling door en wordt steeds sterker. Haar magie, gebaseerd op de vier elementen, is goed uitgewerkt en de worldbuilding is niet te ingewikkeld en precies goed gedoseerd.

De wereld en het karakter van Rinna zijn sterk opgebouwd en dragen The King of Wolves. Intrige aan het hof, magie en een klein beetje romantiek zijn zo gedoseerd dat je blijft lezen. Een soort House of the Dragon met wolven! Rinna is een karakter waarmee je kan identificeren en ik ben heel benieuwd wat het tweede deel van The Crowfield Chronicles in petto heeft!

Although I usually don't read in English, I decided to try this one, and I'm glad I did. The English is perfectly understandable for a beginner but doesn’t feel childish. The story is young adult, yet it includes many mature themes and surprising twists. I love how the author incorporated the four elements—ones that have been used many times before—and still managed to make them feel refreshing.

The characters are well-written. It took me some time to warm up to Rinna, but the more she discovered herself, the more I enjoyed her. Her dry sense of humor played a big part in that. This book also has some villains you'll truly despise.

The best thing about the worldbuilding is the language. It feels natural, and you immediately understand what it means, but it’s still unique to this world. For example: "What in Water's name" and "It flowed around her like a wyvern spreading its wings."

Definitely a recommendation!

Ik heb ELKE minuut genoten van dit boek. Wat heerlijk! Als ik een pauze had met lezen, bleef ik maar aan de personages en aan het verhaal denken. Dit verhaal hield me echt vast. Wat zou er nu gebeuren.... Ik werd heel nieuwsgierig door dit boek. Het is ook zo fijn en meelevend en realistisch geschreven. Ik zag letterlijk alles precies voor me. Ik leefde ook heel erg mee met Rinna en Daalzen. Dit boek pakte me écht heel erg, dat is lang geleden bij een boek. Heel benieuwd hoe dit verder verloopt! 😊

I highly recommend reading this book from this new author. Especially if you love fantasy/YA/kingdoms and a world reminding of wheel of time.

I loved how the Crowfield Chronicles portrays the world of Nortland, with its own history, clans, religion and political intrigues and deceit. I really like to read from a female protagonist point of view as it quite accurately reflects what tons of women must have gone through in the medieval ages. The story immediately captures your attention and shrouds the reader in action and mystery that remains through the whole book. Although it has some common fantasy story element, Nortland and all its magic still is unlike anything ive read before and very original in its approach. Its vaguely like game of thrones but way better written.

Incredibly original and refreshing
I had high hopes for this book and they definitely came to fruition. This was such a original story! I loved all the twists and turns. It was fun to learn and grow alongside the main character and to see all that came her way. I can't wait for the next book. 4.5 stars!
And to Renske, who will probably read this, thank you for taking me on this journey and for being a one of a kind author who listened to my wishes of getting an epub, that means a lot!

It was a great story! It did bother me a bit that there were these random big spaces between sentences sometimes. And a few rare grammar mistakes.
The ending dit feel a bit cheep/wattpaddy to me, it didn't really suck me in and had me anxiously waiting for what was about to happen next.
Overall the plot was great!

Exciting and approachable page turner for fans of the fantasy genre!
Touches on the topic of individuating your own sense of self and values. I think this is especially nice/relatable to read as a young adult or adolescent.
Also nice to find yourself drifting away in forest scenery.

I got this book as a Christmas present and once I started reading I just didn't want to put it down. I thought it was really well written and I was really absorbed by it. I also thought Rinna was a very relatable character. I hope there will be a second book soon!

I first learned about this book from a former colleague, but even if I hadn't, the captivating cover alone would have compelled me to purchase it from the bookstore.

Initially it took me a while to get used to all the terms and locations that mentioned in this book. But thankfully the story started quickly and captured my attention with how it's portrays the world of Nortland, with its own history, clans, religion and not to mentioned the world where the protagonist lives in a world where women are more like bridal gifts than human beings.

Overall, I found the story to be refreshingly original, blending elements reminiscent of both Game of Thrones and The Wheel of Time.

Looking forward to the next book already and though the comparison above, surely hoping it won't keep me waiting as long as Game of Thrones did for its sequels! ;)

I was looking for a little escapism and picked up "The King of Wolves", a fantasy book set in a world of warring clans. We follow Princess Rinna, as she gets caught up in political games through a strategic betrothal, and in a burst of anger realises she has magical powers. Adventure ensures, including a troup of wolves, a mysterious stranger and a plot to overthrow a usurper.

It sounded very good to me, but I never actually managed to get immersed fully. Probably because the pacing and plot development at times really seems off ( maybe because it's this author's debut?) For instance, Rinna and her best friend see each other every day, yet manage not to find a time to privately talk about her visions for weeks? She lives in a completely patriarchal society that burn women for magic, yet her brother and his warriors accept her magic AND autonomy in the space of 3 pages? Why would both the king AND the Prince marry women from the same family, that is not strategic at all?

There seemed to be some commentary on the despicable way women are being treated in this book, which I appreciated. However, the laissez-faire attitude on killing irked me.

Overall, I still found it enjoyable, but quite predictable in terms of plot, probably won't continue the series.

I loved it, one of the better books I read in 2022. The book is set in an imaginary world, but the characters and their relations are realistic. For instance the position of the talented main character, a young girl named Rinna, who is expected to follow her father, brother and husband.
The book builds up nicely to the end, once I gor halfway I finished it in no time.
I sincerely recommend this book!

‘The King of Wolves’ is het eerste deel in The Crowfield Chronicles. In dit deel volgen we Rinna. Heel haar leven heeft ze geleerd dat Elmentants slecht en niet te vertrouwen zijn. Haar familie, die over de acht clans van Nortland regeren, spenderen al eeuwen aan het verbranden van alle Elmentants. Zelfs meisjes zo jong als vier jaar oud. Als Rinna dan wel een hele rare droom heeft, die zo echt aanvoelt dat ze begint te twijfelen of ze zelf een Elmentant is, weet ze niet wat ze moet doen. Bovendien is er een oorlog gaande, dus heeft ze wel belangrijkere dingen om zich op te focussen. Als ze dan ook nog moet gaan trouwen, weer een visioen krijgt en er rare dingen in het kasteel gebeuren, staat ze voor de keuze.
Zal zij haar plicht doen als dochter van de koning en iedereen trots maken, of zal ze opzoek gaan naar wie ze werkelijk is.

Aaaah! Ik las mijn allereerste Engels boek en wat heb ik genoten. Toen Renske mij vroeg of ik haar boek wilde recenseren zei ik meteen: Ja! Dit was een mooie gelegenheid om ‘gedwongen’ aan een Engels boek te beginnen. Ik was altijd erg bang dat ik door het vertalen in mijn hoofd en het googlen van de woorden die ik niet wist, de film van het verhaal niet zou zien in mijn hoofd. Gelukkig was daar absoluut geen sprake van. De schrijfstijl vond ik lekker vlot en er is geen gebruik gemaakt van google waardige woorden. Hierdoor kon ik lekker in het verhaal blijven. De wereld Nortland is beeldend neergezet waardoor je echt het idee krijgt dat je er zelf loopt. Het kleine wereldkaartje vond ik erg handig om af en toe even terug te spieken welk deel van Nortland nou ook alweer waar lag.
Het verhaal begint direct spannend. Een man is gevangengenomen in Crowfield Forest door bandieten, wanneer er plots wolven verschijnen. Dit zou niet moeten kunnen. Wolven zouden namelijk al jaren geleden uitgestorven zijn.
Verder maken we dus kennis met Rinna. Een erg onzeker meisje dat alles doet wat haar tante haar opdraagt. Rinna’s moeder is lang geleden overleden, dus haar tante heeft de taak op zich genomen. Wanneer ze dan ook gedwongen moet trouwen met een vreselijke man beginnen er rare dingen in het kasteel te gebeuren. Leugens, bedrog en verraad beginnen de overhand te nemen. Wanneer Rinna door een gebeurtenis wakker wordt in Crowfield Forest en hulp krijgt van de knappe Daalzen begint ze te ontplooien. Langzaam maar zeker verandert Rinna van een onzeker meisje naar een sterke vrouw.
De spanning wordt goed vastgehouden door het verhaal heen waardoor je door wil blijven lezen. De verschillende twists in het verhaal houden het interessant en ik vond het erg jammer dat hij al uit was. Ik kan niet wachten op deel 2!
Als je houdt van een sterk vrouwelijk hoofdpersoon, magie, wolven, spanning, twists en een vleugje romantiek. Dan is dit boek echt iets voor jou!

Ik kan wel zeggen dat The Crowfield Chronicles een grote verandering in mijn leven heeft gebracht, omdat ik met hem heb geleerd wat een leuk boek is! Ik was niet lui om te lezen, ik had nog geen leuk boek als dit gevonden.
Ik ben geen boekenwurm en lees graag in het Nederlands, maar ik kreeg de uitdaging om dit Engelstalige boek te lezen en ik heb er absoluut geen spijt van! Het is een heerlijk boek om te lezen. Ik kon niet stoppen met lezen en werd met elke pagina nieuwsgieriger! Dit boek en het tweede (The Smoke Wraiths) zijn mijn cadeau-opties voor mijn vrienden.

There are so many poorly written filler fantasy stories out there … and this certainly isn’t one of them! What a debut. I skeptically started this one, and about a chapter later I was hooked. The story is clever as is its main hero. The English is very good, funny and sharp. The use of magic is intriguing and the love stories are not as sugary as one sees in many YA novels. One of the best I’ve read in years. I cannot wait for the second part!

And here I was thinking I’d have to pay a nice but undeserved compliment to yet another friend writing a book. Little did I know I wasn’t capable of putting it down during my holiday, and this time the compliment could be sincere and well deserved.

I really enjoyed the book, the clever writing, the twists and turns, the world building, the feminism. All of it.
