Maya has never had much to complain about. Sure, her parents are absent a lot, having important jobs in the government, but at the end of the day she has all the material possessions a girl could want. Not to mention a great best friend, and secure spot in the popular group at her school.
Yet she can never shake the feeling of displacement. Constantly searching for something that’s missing from her life.
Turns out Maya is part of something much bigger than her human existence, and after a mysterious stranger saves her from an ambush at a party, he brings her into his world.

Curse of the Gods (Reverse Harem Fantasy Romance series) UpperYA/NA Trickery. Persuasion. Seduction. Strength. Neutral. Pain.
“How are you handling it all?” she asked, her face serious. I shrugged. “Too soon to tell. I’m going to schedule some time for a breakdown soon, though.”
The third book of the series kind of follows the same pattern as the first two, with a little changes here and there. Reading this was nice and I still think it's something my high-school self might have loved, but I have to admit it's kind of predictable for me and it lacked plot twists to make me hold my breath. I'm still reading the last book; I think the author has some amazing ideas, but she keeps repeating things and I constantly feel like there's not enough depth to the story.
Callie shook her head as well. “You don’t have to deal with this alone. Just because you’re next in line doesn’t mean this is your problem. Emma is right, we’re a team.” “It feels as if I’ve known you two forever,” I said, my usual filters gone.
》》The Plot《《
Maya Lewis has no idea her life is about to change when she heads out for a party with Brad, her best friend. But her parents, who were a great deal of time away, working for the government, seem to have hidden a huge secret from her: aliens are real and she plays a very important part in upholding the treaty between Earth and Overworld. From here on, you know how the deal goes: hide from Laous, get friendly with the aliens and the other secret keepers, try not to get kidnapped and find your soulmate (told you there's a pattern here).
》》Characters and Relationships《《
“Oh. Em. Gee!” The shriek had me spinning around to find a pretty redhead heading in my direction. She was wearing a white shirt, black jeans with torn knees, and black Converse. What was this, the secret keepers’ uniform? This had to be Emma, the one enthusiastic about us being one big happy family. “This is perfect…” Emma ran her hands through her long wavy hair, her blue eyes sparkling in happiness. “Now we just have to find the last secret keeper before that asshole Laous. Then the four of us will be a team.” I smiled again. How did these two make me like them so quickly? I’d never had that happen before.
OK, so we meet Maya, the third secret keeper and we get to watch her and Chase, the overlord of Leights, fall in love and get Bonded, which was expected. I don't think any of us was waiting for anything else. However, that was not something I could classify as a highlight. What I really liked in this book was the relationship between the three girls: Emma, Callie and Maya.
“You feel it too, right?” “I feel it,” he said. “I’m not sure what we’re supposed to do about it, especially right now, but from the first moment I heard your name, I knew you were going to be trouble.”
Chase and Maya had that insta-love I'm not exactly a fan of, but I guess they were suitable for each other somehow, but I find it difficult to describe. I made sense for them to end up together, but again, insta-love? It just doesn't work for me.
》》Favorite Scenes《《
🔥 "This time, there was no holding back my screams, and it felt like three seconds later I was surrounded by half-naked men. In any other circumstance I would be thanking my lucky stars and searching for dollar bills to shove into their shorts…"
I don't even have words for it, but that definitely goes on my list of favorite moments. I mean, just picture that.
🔥 Emma, Callie and Maya having to figure out which pair of Converse was theirs
🔥 Daniel making sure Callie has coffee before leaving the first safehouse
“Coffee. Me. Now.” A note of crazy entered her tone. “You can’t make me leave without it.” Daniel smiled – all women needed to get themselves a man who smiled at them like that. “Just how you like it.” Emma let out a relieved, exaggerated sigh. “For a second there I thought they were going to make us travel with an uncaffeinated Callie.” “Better to take our chances with Laous,” Lexen agreed.
🔥 Every little mention of how amazing Emma with Lexen and Callie with Daniel were as couples; I mean, I feel like the glimpse of those relationships gives me more satisfaction then the scenes from the books where those relationships were actually formed
🔥 Briefly meeting the fourth keeper
"My mind kept flashing back to the girl. She was beautiful, and I had a feeling on dry land she would be breathtaking. Xander was in so much trouble."
》》Conclusion《《
Hard to say. The ideas are great, there's a lot of potential for these characters and their relationships but I definitely feel they are underdeveloped and it bugs me a lot. The insta-love is something I don't like but the fact that we see all the characters from the previously two books is great.
But for a really proper conclusion, just let me use this quote from Maya:
"He was an alien, a Daelighter. Why were the good ones always gay, taken, or aliens? Seriously."
Ok so I wanted to give this 5 stars really bad. Because it’s Jaymin Eve and all of her books are pretty much amazing. BUT....Well there were two major problems with this book and this series overall. 1. The girls are incredibly immature. We could make the argument that they’re young but some things are just ridiculous. At one point Maya and the gang have minutes to leave a location because they’ve been discovered. She takes time to put on makeup! Death is on the line and she stops to pick out a cute impractical outfit and matching blush?! Come on! Really???!!! She never seems to grasp the danger they’re in because she’s constantly worried about trivial things. 2. I was very excited to see a book that has a multicultural element. Every heroine and hero being white gets boring after awhile. However Eve unfortunately used every single multicultural trope that exists in writing these characters. Maya’s mother is a tiny ‘traditional’ Asian woman. And per every Asian character Maya herself has the colored streak in her hair to signify her ‘rebellious’ nature. Think every Asian female character you seen in mainstream film or tv. That’s Maya. Even Emma suffers from this. One black parent but other than thicker hair or naturally more tan she displays no other real connection with being biracial. I had hoped against hope this series would include a female lead that was black. Not for political reasons but because it’s always nice to see a character that looks like you when reading books. Also it could have been used to to explore the cultural differences between the houses in comparison to racial differences on earth. Instead it’s slightly alluded to without delving deeper. Fleshing these characters out more would have helped and not harmed. As it stands they have little to them besides being athletic, a bookworm and spoiled. I KNOW Eve is capable of building a complex and believable fantasy world but these ridiculous tropes get in the way of it in this series.
That said I’m definitely ready for the last book. The story is riveting and original. I’m more that ready for the villain to get his. House of Royal seems poised to be explosive. I just hope the heroines can get their act together and stop acting like indignant children whenever their men get so much as a scratch.
This series just keeps pulling me in deeper and deeper. You think you've found your favorite couple, only to realize you love the next one a little bit more than the last. Or maybe you love them all equally, just differently. For me, I seem to connect to each girl in some way, relate to them. As far as the guys, I just love them all! What girl has never fantasized about finding her soul mate, her bonded mate? I know I have, all my life. I find that I lose myself with in the pages of these books. I've said it before and I'll say it again, Jaymin has a way of sucking you into the world's she creates in her books. I could lose myself in her words, forever. Each and every book in this series has left me wanting more, left me needing to know what happens next, chomping at the bit for one more page. I've also said this before, but it's so true, her books are an addiction! I am in dire need of the next book, House of Royale.
This was the worst book so far for me. I was really excited to see Chase be the main character, and Maya was a good lead, but the book was just boring. It's the same formula as the first two, which makes it really predictable. I'm sick of listening to explanations over and over again. Nothing really happened in this book and it was way too short. I'm also really sick of the whole couple thing and the soulmate "insta" love. Hopefully Xander's book shakes things up.
While both the hero and heroine are cute and the book had some interesting parts like the magic trees, I'm so effing bored! It's the same thing as the last two books copy, paste and repeat.
Sep 2020 review: I’ve re-read this entire series a couple of times now AND I DO have a favorite couple. Chase and Maya are my favorite. I love their personalities the most.
July 2018 review: It’s hard to pick a favorite in a series when each story, and each couple for that matter, is so freaking awesome!
September is too far. I want, no, I need House Royale’s story now.
I had lost a bit of interest in this series after book 2 but picked this book up as in need of a book 3. I am glad I did as this book was almost as good as the first one. I immediately liked main character Maya and found myself invested in her story quite quickly. I liked that her story was slightly different from that of the other two so far. I am now looking forward to picking up book 4 and the conclusion to the series
While I didn’t care for this story as much as book two, Maya was a great character. If you liked the first two books you’ll enjoy this one. And I really can’t wait for the next book.
I can't wait for the next book. I love everything about this series. The characters are diverse, sexy, smart, and strong. The storyline is fascinating. I love all the twists and turns. The world building is incredible. I found this series by being a member of goodreads. I am grateful for all the people there who share a passion for reading.
Book 3 or book 1? This series has very similar storylines for all three books. First book loved, second book was a bit repetitive but thought it was still good, and now book three is along the same lines as the first two.
Book starts with the lead character/secret keeper is danger. Her secret keeper mate comes and rescues her from bad guy. Secret keeper and boy falls in love in two minutes. Guys says not to rush it.. they indeed rush it. Bad guys gets angry and retaliates while bursting the love bubble. Something bad happens. Good guys get away. Find next secret keeper. Book ends.
But seriously, the series started out great but damn some of these lines were almost the exact same from the previous two books. Don’t get me wrong, the book is still good but I could go for some variety. I’ve also noticed between her other series, they have very very similar stories lines as well. This will be the last series I read by her. She’s a great writer but the story is played out now.
This series continues to be incredibly innovative. It’s a rare mixture of fantasy and perhaps a little scifi. In each book the characters are credible and likeable keeping the series beating along at a goood pace and a strong story arc. I am looking forward to the fourth book which should finish up the series.
i really enjoyed this !! definitely more so than the second book but not as much as the first book, my fave thing atm is seeing all the characters we already know interact !!! i’m super excited for the next book bc i’m biased towards water & i find Xander very interesting!!!
House of Leights is book 3 in the secret keepers series. The story continues on from book 2 but from Maya’s POV I really like how this series has been written, Each new book in the series adds to story with great new characters and relationships growing and evolving. I can’t wait for the final book in the series. Hoping for a Brad and Star spinoff. :)
Why do I keep reading this drivel?! And this one even tried to sneak some socio-political stuff in as well. Sheesh. But will I read the last in the series? Probably.
This has been my favourite in the series so far. The first two basically centre around a couple, whereas this one has secondary focuses on the group as well, and it just makes the story more balanced. The insta-love has been explained by the previous couples' actions, so it's more believable in this instance. Plus, tree form. And a protective best friend along for the ride. There was a lot of fun and action leading up to the final book, hopefully we'll see a few big twists before it ends.
“I was a secret keeper? That didn’t feel right. It didn’t make any sense to me. I was an ordinary eighteen-year-old girl. School and cheer and stupid boy drama. I had no qualifications to be part of something that could destroy Earth and … Overworld. I couldn’t even choose a damn college!”
“You’re my everything, Maya,” Chase told me, still holding himself just away from me. “Beyond love. Beyond life. Beyond the worlds we are from. You are my first and only priority, and I will strive every single day to never fail you, this I can promise.”
Me gusto que se quisiera tomar las cosas con calma con Chase a pesar de la conexión súper fuerte que tenían.
“This is Maya Lewis,” he said. “She’s the third secret keeper, the one from House of Leights. She’s who we’re here to protect.” His eyes were the greenest I’d ever seen, almost luminescent. “It’s nice to meet you, Maya,” he said, holding out a hand for me to take. I didn’t want to. If his voice affected me to the level where I almost moaned out loud, then his touch would probably kill me.”
“You didn’t take my choice away – I chose you long ago. The moment I heard your name, I knew that I had to find you. I had to save you.” I was mesmerized by him, unable to look away. “I followed your energy, believing that my purpose – the reason I felt such a draw – was because I was supposed to keep you safe … and then I saw you at the party, dancing. You threw your head back as you laughed with such joy. That was when I knew that there was nothing I wouldn’t do to protect you, that there was no other for me in either world.” “Were you worried I wouldn’t feel the same connection?” I whispered, my voice hoarse. His eyes twinkled then as a slight grin lifted the corner of his mouth. “Not too worried. I figured I’d eventually convince you we were meant for each other. I had an eternity to try.”
Como siempre ame la amistad de las chicas y la amistad de los chicos y a todas las parejas en general como se protegen entre todos
“Emma is right, though,” Callie added. “I had no family at all, and now I feel like there are so many of you damn people I care about. And that scares me…” She trailed off for a moment. “But I believe that together we’re the strongest team I’ve ever seen. There is nothing we can’t accomplish. It’s … a true family. None of us will be left behind. Laous will not take any more from us.”
“Callie pushed her away gently, but there was a twinkle in her eye. She adored Emma, and I got it. It was hard not to like her. She was funny, and quick-witted, and super-nice. Both of the secret keepers were. I felt like an outsider, the one who didn’t know the jokes, who hadn’t done the miles to earn her place yet. But a part of me wanted to stick around long enough that I became a true member of this group.”
Ame a Brad y su relación con Maya era tan linda yo quiero una amistad así.
“Brad would always be my best friend, but our lives were changing, expanding. We were finding new people to love and that was a good thing. “Come back to me, you hear,” he said as he pulled away, dropping me down to my feet. “Best friends forever does not have an out clause. You’re in for life.”
También ame que empezara algo con Star o algo así Star ya merecía a alguien y el es bien perfecto para ella me encantan espero ver más de sus momentos en el siguiente libro
“The number of chicks I have had to see you suck face with…” I trailed off at the panicked look in his eyes. As his gaze shifted to Star, I realized what he was worried about – that once she found out about his past, she might not like the person he was. Later I would remind him that there was no point hiding his past. He would just have to show Star that he was no longer that same guy.”
Y esta fraseee de Maya
“If humans knew these sorts of “aliens” walked among us, there would be fewer movies with little green men and more with hot gods that everyone wanted to be bonded with.”
Trueee I totally want one for myself
4🌟romance 4🌟trama
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
We meet the 3rd Secret Keeper, Maya, this time. She's best friends with Brad. They both have parents that work all the time in Government jobs so they spend most of their time together!!
Chase of the House of Leights sets out to find & protect Maya. Things don't go as smoothly as he'd hoped. Laous & his men are already after her so the race is on to protect her, her friend & her parents whilst keeping her blood & the other Secret Keepers away from Laous!! 😳
I enjoyed all of the couples working together. Seeing the power the girls could produce through their bond as Secret Keepers was fun too 🙂 Looking forward to book 4!!
I was already intrigued by Chase so I am so excited his story was so perfect! I was on the fence initially about Maya, but she proved to be another amazing addition to the Secret Keeper group. The team of keepers and overlords experience so much in this book as they attempt to keep Maya and her family safe while looking for the fourth keeper. The romance between Maya and Chase is amazing and sweet. Plus you get to learn more about Laous and what powers the guys have through some epic battles. It’s an amazing world and while I’m excited to get the next book I’m sad to see it end soon. Xander’s story should be awesome! I highly recommend you read this series!!
Is it September yet???? Seriously, I cannot wait for the next installment in this freaking amazing series. I just cannot get enough of it! House of Leights is the third book in the Secret Keepers series by Jaymin Eve. To say I loved this story is an understatement. This series has drawn me in from the first book and this book just continued to enthrall me. This book reveals more of the major plot while giving us a better look at the House of Leights. This book is part of a series that needs to be read in order. This book is about the third Secret Keeper. If you have been reading the books then you know what this means. I was super excited for this book because I knew we would learn so much more about this world and what is happening in it. Furthermore, I was excited for Chase to get to meet his match. Watching these four friends get to meet their match has been a blessing. Speaking of matches, let me tell you about Maya. She is a strong character. She is another one who knows nothing about this world so to see her adjusting was amazing. I loved her personality and her ability to just roll with the flow. Then you have Chase. Man I knew Chase was a special one. He exceeded my expectations in this book. The heat in this book is there, but it is muted. I expect as such as this has a YA novel feel. With that being said, there is plenty of chemistry between these characters. It is enough to make you wish you had your own Chase. This area was done very well. The writing style of this book is great. The pace is steady and fits with the rest of the books. I also loved how the author was able to reveal little bits of details throughout the book. What I think is most important is that the author didn’t downplay things that happened in previous books. I don’t want to say too much, but let’s just say the events from the last book have truly affected the characters and that was seen in this book. Overall, I loved this book. I am in love with this series. I am dying to read the last book to see how this ends. I know where I want to see it go, but I cannot wait to see what the author has in store for us readers. I think when this series is over, I will have a hangover. I really enjoyed House of Leights, but House of Imperial is still my favorite in this series. Ratings: Plot: 5/5 Characters: 5/5 Heat: 5/5 Writing Style: 5/5 Overall: 5/5
Maya is a senior in high school and her life is pretty great. Until that is she goes to a party and gets attacked on the way home. Then she finds out that her loving parents do indeed work for the government, just not doing what she thought. They are ambassadors to aliens. Turns out she knows a secret, that she didn’t know she knew. Oh… and an alien baddie is after her blood. What is a gal to do but jump ship with her bestie to an alien world? Thank goodness momma and daddy get to come along.
Maya’s life is different from the other two keepers. Emma is an orphan and Callie was raised by a paranoid momma on the run. So it is easy to expect her to be a little entitled or snobby. But with her parents by her side, she tracks of to another world and tries to save the day. One cheerleader at a time.
I liked Maya, but her bestie Brad stole the show a few times. Their relationship to each other is pretty spectacular to see. She also took the backseat to Chase. Because that is one guy a gal could fall in love with in an instant. Dang. What was Jaymin thinking when she wrote him? Braxton still holds by heart, with Brace and Baelen tied at second. So she can write an alpha male that will make your heart flutter.
The romance in this one was a bit on the back burner as Laous is getting more powerful and people have died on both sides of the war. I am glad that the pairing of the secrets to a Daelighter is a bit clearer now. I hated the thought of insta-love without a reason.
Overall this series is good, fast-paced and pretty much brain candy. If you like gals who aren’t afraid to stand up for themselves and the rest of the world than you will like this one too. I really can’t wait to see where this is all headed.
My Rating 3 out of 5 stars
Favorite Quote He was an alien, a Daelighter. Why were the good ones always gay, taken, or aliens? Seriously.
Other People Brad- Maya’s bestie Emma- first secret keeper Callie- second secret keeper Laous- Daniel’s uncle, big baddie Daniel/Lexen- Chase’s besties
House of Leights is the third book in the Secret Keepers series by Jaymin Eve.
I didn't realize how much of a disconnect there was to Callie's character, in the second book, until Jaymin introduced us to Maya. While I loved the contrast in Emma's and Callie's characters due to the differences in knowledge regarding Daelighters initially, the contrast for Maya's character was smoother in transition.
I'm honestly most in love with this pairing. While Lexen's draygone abilities are intriguing, Daniel's Hades-like essence is irresistible, Chase's calm and connection to nature and godlike trees is seriously my favorite super power. I felt more in tune with these four relationships budding, and their intrinsic connections when so entrenched in Maya and Chase's introduction and growth with each other. So much so, that to look back on the previous books makes it more obvious.
I wish I could give this book a higher rating. Alas, my main concern with the second book is still valid and prevalent. That Brad and Star seem to be building something mysterious and heartwarming is cute and adds a certain depth to the story, all alone, but there could be more. There's this infinitesimal feeling of lack when you yearn to understand tertiary characters on a deeper level and are left unfulfilled. Like with another dying brother, in Frazier's case... if he's truly lost, with how little we got to know him, it will tarnish the next book for me.
I listened to this book on Audible and, I hope, that was why I wasn't as fond of this one. Maybe if I had read it, the rating would have been higher... Maybe. Good things: The plot does move forward (yay, progress!) compared to book 2, and there is productive action in this book. (Running away, getting chased, traps, etc.) You learn more about the Day Lighters and Overworld. I like the best friend and Maya is completely different (family/upbringing) compared to Emma and Callie. The author made a good effort at attempting to change the whole 'bond' thing up a tad with Maya/Chase Despite eye rollin moments, it was entertaining.
The not so great things: the audible narrator. -_- The 'bond' of Maya and Chase. At least while listening to this book VS reading it, the relationship seemed so... Clinical? A mathematical equation that had to happen? It's like they said, "This bond is here, it's so overwhelming, therefore I'll give in to this and forever connect my soul to this person who I find attractive but I don't really know.". O_o I don't mind "bonds' in the Fantasy genre, but this one did not fulfill its potential. If Maya and Chase had more time to actually get to know one another like the other 2 Secret Keepers did, then their """relationship""" would have been more than 2 dimensional and less forced.
Overall I will still read or listen to book 4 to find out how this all resolves.
This review contains SPOILERS! The third book in this series was probably my least favorite so far. I couldn’t connect with the main character about much of anything. She didn’t have as much character (if that makes any sense) as the other girls have so far. And she seemed to be the most unlikely to pair with Chase of House Leights (the tree and nature loving folk). Yet once she sees Chase and he shows her the beauty of nature, she does a 180 and sees it all around her. I liked how she had a best human friend and refuses to give him up through it all, even though it made it a little more unbelievable. I was highly disappointed in the scene where Maya is nervous about traveling through the Teraporter and asks what will happen if anything goes wrong. She’s told she could be lost forever, and immediately gets lost. It was just poor planning on plot points. It could have easily been suggested in a previous book; let alone right before the scene where it’s going to happen. It isn’t even like it could be called foreshadowing since it’s mentioned immediately before it happens. At least you get to see more of the other Secret Keepers and their mates, and the plot thickens as you continue to read through the series. The ending was dramatic and does perfectly lead up to the fourth and final book in the series. I really want to see how this final showdown will play out.
Jaymin has brought a new edition to the Secret Keepers series and man oh man is it good. Maya is the newest keeper to come to light and she wasn't exactly what I was expecting, and that's not a bad thing. When I first read about Maya at the end of House of Imperial and discovered how involved her parents are in the government, I assumed that Maya would be a little more knowledgeable about the whole situation - I couldn't have been more wrong. I suspected I wouldn't like Maya when she was first introduced as this kind of entitled, overprotected teen, and yet there was so much dimension to her character that I couldn't help but love her. As for Chase - I love him! He's so cool, calm and collected... until someone has grabbed his girl that is. I can see the culmination of this series, with the end just in sight, and yet there is still so much that I feel needs to be covered and I can't see how it's going to be wrapped in one book. I would love to see Lexen's siblings get their own books, as I think they deserve them after all they have been through, and I'd love to see them get their happy endings. Same for Daniel's siblings potentially... assuming they survive...?
