High school freshman, Danny Burns, loves life, art, and boys. From the outside, he looks like a happy-go-lucky guy with no concerns. He blows off the bullies and he’s an amazing friend. What people don’t know is that he’s had a boyfriend since the summer, and when Danny decides being a secret isn’t enough for him and tries to end it, it’s not as easy as he expects. High school freshman, Noah Glass, thinks he knows exactly who he is, what he wants, and where he’s going. Unfortunately, when the strict religious rules he’s grown-up with don’t line up with him being able to have friendships with people he cares about, he begins to question his own beliefs. Guidance Counselor, Mrs. Shaw, formed a special club forty years ago. Each year, she handpicks twelve students to participate, but no one knows what they talk about, and former students never tell. Danny and Noah are two of the chosen this year. When Mrs. Shaw partners them up, their lives begin to alter in ways that they couldn’t have imagined. While Danny is confronted with a stalking ex, Noah begins to question his values. As their friendship grows within the nurturing circle of Club Shaw, will that foundation be enough to get them through the troubles ahead? Will Noah be strong enough to set aside his preconceived notions and be there for Danny? Will Danny trust in Noah’s friendship and strength to help him move on from his ex to give the new guy Noah introduces him to a chance? This is book two in the Mrs. Shaw's Club series. We’ll continue to get glimpses into the lives of the students, and with each book, we’ll see a romance bloom. This is a standalone, but more fun if you watch them all grow together through the year.
I LOVE DANNY. But seriously, how can I hang out with this kid? He is soooooooo adorable. All the kids are wonderful, but he has my heart.
Although there's plenty of happy fluff here, this is a serious book that deals with serious problems of sexuality, religion, and owning our personal truths. Powerful stuff, especially for young readers looking for guidance.
We Have a Decision is a very unique high school story.
It all starts with Mrs. Shaw, who pairs up kids, and forms a club for these kids each year. She hand selects them after observing them carefully. She seeks out kids who need help.
This book revolves around Danny and Noah. It is really sweet to see them start to change their perceptions of things and form a unique friendship. Danny is openly gay and is being bullied, as well as stalked. Noah has grown up planning on becoming a pastor. His church believes that being gay is a sin. Thus, Noah is at a crossroads when his new friend Danny wants to date his best friend, Josh.
I have to admit that every damn school needs a Mrs. Shaw. She is extremely observant, caring, and understanding. I don't want to spoil the story for anyone, but she is an amazing teacher who really helps her students to change their views on people and things. She is truly refreshing!
I highly recommend We Have A Decision to anyone looking for a coming of age story. It appears that each book will feature different people from the group.
What a wonderful YA book about friendship and romance, fighting for those that mean something to you and acceptance for all. Danny had a romance over the summer but with someone who didn't want anyone to know. Nothing has changed since they returned to school so he breaks things off b it ends up with a stalker. Whilst this is going on, Danny has become a member of Club Shaw, a group of students handpicked by Mrs Shaw, the school guidance counsellor. Among them is Noah. Noah is a bit of a loner at school but we'll liked in his group at church that he attends with his family and plans to become a minister. Danny is determined that they'll be friends and so it becomes. There are a few bumps on the way, some lifelong friendships made and a couple of hard decisions for several of the group but its worth it in the end. I loved this book! It's not often I read a YA but I'm very happy to have got the chance at this one. Mrs Shaw is a hoot and she adores who she thinks of as "her kids". She has this inner knowledge of who needs help most and who would go well with who as she pairs up the kids in her group. Danny and Noah are both wonderful boys. Each having their own thoughts, feelings and worries but working well together as friends. We get to know others in the group and hear the rest that were in book 1. There is as scene that may be a little hard to read for some but the coming together of friends and family after and the rallying support for Danny is wonderful to read. I'd definitely recommend this to anyone who reads YA and those looking for a sweet romance. It is worth knowing that Danny is gay whilst he does have a relationship there is no more than hand holding and kissing. There's plenty of cute moments! I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.
4.5* I haven’t read a YA novel in the last year or so, but when I heard about this series, I couldn’t wait to dive in! Totally worth it! This book has all the best of YA – first loves, first heartbreaks, teenage angst, serious real world issues, and tight knit friendships. It is not necessary to read them in order (I read the second one first) as they focus on a different set of characters but have an intersecting timeline. I liked the series more when I went back to read the first one as it filled in more of the story for me. The second book deals with heavier issues than the first does though. Would absolutely recommend and I cannot wait for the third book in the series!
We Have a Decision follows Noah and Danny as they grow a friendship between themselves and the others in the group. Danny has a huge heart, is loyal, and is willing to go the extra mile for anyone he cares about. He loves art and make-up and always dresses well. Noah is from a very religious family and spends most of his free time outside of school attending church functions before being asked to join Mrs. Shaw’s club. Noah and Danny get paired together for the year by Mrs. Shaw as a support team for each other and to help each broaden their views of the world. The more Noah gets to know Danny and understand the world around him, he starts to question some of the religious teachings of his current church. Noah also becomes a huge support for Danny when Danny starts getting bullied and stalked by his ex.
“I asked if you wanted to know the answer to your question, and you said you didn’t know… Until you want the answer, you’re better off minding your own business.” (Loved that scene between Charlie and Noah!) And LOVED Danny!!!! He’s just so bouncy and awesome!
I received an ARC of this book from LesCourt Author Services. This is my honest opinion and review.
I truly enjoyed this story. The concept in interesting and the characters are well-written. The group of kids are learning about who they are as people and how they interact with others. I'm assuming each book is about a different pair of students in the club. I loved how the story progressed in this book and that you don't need to read the first book to enjoy this one.
Danny is a very bubbly person and likes to make friends. He doesn't hide that he is gay. He wants to be friends with his partner in the club, Noah, but he isn't sure how Noah's beliefs will affect their chance at friendship.
Noah is learning to open his eyes and his mind, to think outside the beliefs of his church. His time with Danny let him open himself up to new beliefs and to seeing his best friend in a new way.
The characters are compelling and the story holds your attention. This isn't a teen romance book, but a book about opening yourself up to new ideas, experiences, and people. How family can be more than just blood and how you need to think for yourself.
This is a book, a series, that I will be recommending to my children when they get to be older.
I am so glad I accepted an advance copy of this wonderful book, and now I’ve got to go back and read book one for more on all the characters! This is a coming-of-age tale for a current generation, in the truest sense of the phrase. The voyage to adulthood that these teens embark on in Mrs. Shaw’s Club is complicated by the society in which each lives. Growing up means confronting long-held beliefs, often planted by parents and those closest to us, and determining for ourselves just what we believe deep down. This book tackles acceptance and tolerance in a loving and moving way. I loved that the author surprised me occasionally, and the love that develops among the kids in the group is beautiful and affirming. Mrs. Shaw may be a Svengali, or perhaps she’s just an extremely insightful and experienced counselor, but there’s no doubt her club is changing her students’ lives for the better. In the same way, I think reading We Have a Decision could make a real, positive difference in the life of a teen, or an adult who loves and supports a teen. This is a lovely, clean, innocent read. I am eagerly awaiting book 3, to see what the next pair will learn together.
This is the second book in the Mrs. Shaw’s Club series. Let me say, I wish there was a Mrs. Shaw at my school when growing up and now for children growing up today. She is truly a wonderful caring woman to not only the kids in her club but all kids.
This story is about Danny and Josh as partnered in the club and their developing friendship, acceptance, and a whole lot more. I could not have loved any two kids more than I loved them. They are so sweet, caring, and protective of those close to them. I really don’t want to give away anything that’s happens in this book as I believe it’s best to take the journey with the kids as they learn who they are, developed their voice, and take a stand for their beliefs and friends.
I love all the other kids in the club and can’t wait for the next book to continue the series.
This is a wonderful story of the strong friendship that grows between two completely different teen boys. Danny is sweet, funny, loving, and gay. Noah is deeply religious, serious, straight, and fairly oblivious to the struggles of those around him. The mysterious Mrs. Shaw invites both boys into her secretive club at school, and they begin a special relationship. As Danny and Noah become close friends, the other group members and those around them also find their lives changing. It's the "magic" of this wonderful club. This is listed as book two in the series. I haven't read book one, but I didn't feel that I was missing part of the story. I'm interested enough in this sweet YA world, that I will probably end up reading the prior book soon. This was great!
This is a YA book and is a genre that I don't usually read but I'm glad I was given for my voluntary and personal review of this book as it is truly wonderful with much to teach young people about personal growth, acceptance, love and friendship. I recommend this book so much that I brought a copy for my own children to read. This is the second book in this series and although I haven't, I think it would be a good idea to read each of them in order, Mrs Shaw is a wonderful character, the one you wish was in your own life, the rest of the characters are well written and engaging you just want to protect and love them all throughout these books.
I'm in love with Mrs. Shaw and her group. I would have liked a Mrs. Shaw at school as well.
Danny is a very open person and loves to make new friends Noah learns to think outside the box and learns that there are many other things besides the teachers of the very strict church to whom his family belongs. We meet Josh, a friend of Noah, he and Danny fall in love.
The book is about stalking and bullying, about friends who stand up for each other, about a family that leaves everything they know to help a young man.
An absolut worth reading book. The series should become mandatory in every school.
I rarely venture into the YA Genre of books. Simply because I am more of a Historical and Paranormal book person. But, this book/series is one of those rare finds that grab you and take you along for a wonderful journey. Every character and situation is relatable, no matter your age. Every teenager and those of us that care for teenagers in some way, should read this series. We all could use a Mrs. S in our lives....... *WINK*
I haven't read a YA LGBTQ book in ages. I can't say I was expecting the story to be, but I enjoyed it. LGBTQ books that have characters who are so real and come across that way through the writing is a really big plus because it connects the reader. I liked it but I wish I had read the first one because there was just something I missed which made this more a 4 star read. Still it was really good. I look forward to reading more.
Seriously this series just keeps getting better. I can wait for all the others. Danny is great. Noah is great. All the kids are great. The relationships their all building, what they’re learning, life keeps happening and they have each other. It’s a beautiful thing.
This book needs to be a part of every school curriculum. This book touches on bullying, first love, learning about your own sexuality and so much more. I can't wait to read more of Mrs. Shaw's club.
this was totally awesome and adorable.. i loved the first and was totally psyched to read the second.. i love the storyline and the characters and it was wonderfully written. amazing!
This is such an adorable story! I love that book has everything from first love to bullying. Everything that happens to teenagers as they are learning about themselves. This is such a great book to read for any teenagers. It has the good and the bad of being a teenagers. Any young read needs this series in their life.
