“Why do you want me?"
"You rescue lost people for a living. Is it any wonder you found me?”

I loved it! Such a great improvement from book 1. This one had all the right feels.

We get to know the main reason why Cam went into Kidnap and Rescue, the guilt he has been carrying all along. So heartbreaking. We meet Cam's family, i loved them all, even grumpy Keith!

Nic and Cam's relationship develop at a steady pace, I enjoyed their tender moments as well as the tense moments. The chemistry between these two is off the charts.

Now the best part for me was the case! i love me some cold cases, clues, trying to figure out who the unsub was....that kind of thing makes my blood hot! The author did an amazing job here, It was so heartbreaking to read and i was kept in the dark until the last moments.

My sweet Cam! Gah!!

Guilt isn't always a rational thing...
Guilt is a weight that will crush you whether you deserve it or not.

And guilt is something Assistant FBI Special Agent in Charge Cameron Byrne lived with for two decades now...
Ähnliches Foto

When a call delivering bad news sends him hurrying back to Boston and into the fold, Cam finds himself confronted with a part of his past that still haunts him to a point he never really could overcome, but he is also reeling from the entirely possible threat of losing someone else he deeply cares about.

It's a good thing that at least his relationship with Assistent US attorney Dominic Price is solid enough to take the next step by moving in together. Or is it? Saying that Nic is reluctant to move in with Cam puts it mildly. He has his reasons, though, and it's not the lack of feelings for Cam that makes him hesitate, rather the contrary.
Ähnliches Foto

He has his own share of ghosts from the past and losing someone else he loves could break him forever. But the imminent danger is looming ahead and with the threats of the loan shark his father is indebted to becoming more and more tangible, how could he possibly endanger Cam's life by coming him so close?

Slowly but surely it becomes apparent that their relationship is still a bit wobbly on its feet, with both men holding something back. So something's got to give or their secrets could signify the end of their love. When Cam complies with his mother's wish to bring closure to his family, it soon becomes apparent that he will need Nic at his side, but when his whole world is shattering around him, he has to gather his wits together or he could loose Nic for good...

*deep breath* I have to fess up...

I'mwellonmywaytolovingNicandCamtogethermorethanIlovedIrish&Whiskey.

There I've said it. Bordering on sacrilege, I know, and I can practically hear your gasps. But there's something about these guys that speaks to me on a whole different level and I can't help myself, I'm a goner. Everytime Nic calls Cam 'Boston' I'm that virtual puddle of goo on the floor.

This story in particular had my allergies kick in. Hard. Oh, what the hell? I admit it, I cried. No dust bunnies. No eyelashes in my eyes. Just tears, pure and simple. I can't even begin to imagine what the disappearance of Cam's little sister would have meant for him and the whole family and how it would affect them again after all this time... And the sick SOB who is responsible made my blood boil and my rage spike into heady heights. During the whole story I pretty much alternated between lovesickness, sadness, rage and heart attack due to the thrill.

At least Nic and Cam - and I - had the whole gang at their side to make it better and I can't wait to get my hands on the next book in this series. I was so sure I know who the mole is, dammit, and now? Gahh...

One word (or two, or three) to the audiobook: I'm probably repeating myself by saying that Tristan James will never be at the top of the list of my favorite narrators, but by now I'm liking him and his pleasant voice well enough - despite his lack of distinctive voices for the characters and his sometimes weird and flat intonation - to listen to the next one as well. :)

I absolutely loved this one!! My first 5 stars read of 2019.
Action packed, angst and a lot of feelings! I may have fallen in love with Nic and Cam.

I dived right into this second book after finishing the first one in the series. The Agents Irish and Whiskey series was great but I've read it somewhere in the summer and I kind of forgot to check this spin off until now. I was surprised there are already 2 books out and the third will be out soon. I asked for an ARC on NetGalley for book #3 but I was kind of sad I had 2 previous ones to read before. I still rarely choose series that feature the same couple as main characters. I was surprised I enjoyed reading the first book, but it was pretty difficult at first to connect with Nic and Cam. Maybe because I couldn't remember much about them from the other series.
Well I can't imagine how difficult it might be for other readers who haven't got a clue about Jamie and Aiden. About Mel. It might be too much. I think the beginning is too full of details and characters and action. But somehow it worked for me, and their back stories came to me as I read. It was good to
revisit them.

This second book was much better! We get A LOT of action and suspense! It's way different than the first one when it comes to the building relationship and all the feelings.
There were many scenes that broke my heart, especially those concerning Nic's father who was still treating him horrific, Cam's fear of coming out to his family, and what happened to Cam's sister who went missing 20 years ago... So much guil. So many people were heartbroken. This story kept me on the edge of my seat and it's really soul wrenching at time. But I love ANGST! So it's right on my alley.

“But I think what Cam wants most is for you to stay alive.”
Nic glanced out at the field again, hoping things went differently this time. Praying for the happy ending he wanted. That Cam deserved. “I’m going to try my damnedest.”
But if it came down to it, he’d always save the man he loved. Even if it meant a fist to his jaw. Or a bullet to his heart”.

And now I'm starting the next one 😁 really hope it will measure my expectations. When this second book was THAT good, I really hope the third will be magnificent!

OMG I FREAKING LOVED THIS!!!

Me, while reading.

Image result for feels gif

It was an avalanche of feels...and I loved every single minute of it.

Cam fell into him. Into the kiss he'd missed. Into the arms that held on tight and kept him from shattering. Into love, more and more each day with this man.

This book continues building the solid foundation of Cam and Nic's relationship, while also dealing with the unsolved disappearance of Cam's little sister 20 years ago...and the fact that Cam's not out to his family. They hid their relationship from their friends....and now they'll have to hide from everyone.

This book was the perfect balance of romance and suspense. It's stuffed with feels from every direction. Especially Nic and Cam's growing love and affection amongst the turmoil in Cam's life, and the growing danger in Nic's.

Nic and Cam need each other. Ground each other. Support each other. And fall deeper and deeper in love every day. They are a true team. Partners.

I was on the edge of my seat reading so much of this book, wondering what twists and turns Layla Reyne was going to throw at me. At the same time, I was a puddle of goo simply melting at the unbreakable bond forging between these two men.

Usually, in a trilogy the middle book can be a bit of a miss. A filler to get you to the third book. NOT HERE.

If the first book hooked me, this one swallowed me whole.

I can't tell you how many scenes I highlighted. The vulnerability these men showed each other gutted me. The honesty, a breath of fresh air. The need, the desire, the trust, the respect, the love.....done. I'm done. Romance reader down.

"Do you love me?"

Nic's lips trailed across his cheek, nuzzling, as the hand on his thigh inched higher. "More than I should."

"Then I'm ready to present our case."

Nic pulled back, meeting his gaze. His pupils were blown so wide hardly any of the blue showed, but the dark brows across the top of them were knitted. "What are you saying, Boston?"

Cam smoothed over them with his fingertips, then down Nic's face. "No more hiding, from anyone. Family, friends, the fucking Federal Building. I don't want to regret not telling anyone how much I love you."

Nic gripped his wrists. "You're putting yourself in the line of fire. I need you to understand that."

"I'm already there, baby."

I can't wait to see how this wraps up in the final book, but I also don't want Cam and Nic's story to end. I've fallen in love with the chosen family in this universe that Layla Reyne created...and I don't know how I'm going to say goodbye.

Craft Brew is book 2 in the Trouble Brewing series by Layla Reyne, and also a spinoff of Irish & Whiskey series. Although I did struggle a bit with book 1 in this series, I absolutely loved this one.

It has been four months since Cam and Nic became a couple, even though their relationship is still unknown to their friends. Nic is still looking over his shoulder because of his father’s activities are still a problem, with no solution in sight. Nic is determined to keep himself and his friends safe and out of harm’s way. He is almost relieved when Cam has to return to Boston for his family. But when open wounds get the best of Cam, he asks Nic for help. Together, along with Jamie, they try to put an end to a nightmare that has been plaguing Cam and his family for years.

While I struggled in book 1 with Nic and Cam being in a relationship, this story solidifies their feelings. Nic is protective and caring for Cam when Cam, himself, is struggling on many different levels. In fact, I moved Nic to the perfect boyfriend list.

I am thrilled that is going to be a third book. I hope that we finally get to see more of Nic’s past and hopefully overcome his demons.

Great continuation of the series. I really love Cam and Nic.

This was the perfect mix of romance and suspense.

And so many feels. I love those little moments between them.

While this one ended more of a HFN, Cam and Nic are solid.

And I'm looking forward to the next book which I hope will delve a bit more in to Nic and his family and past.

5+1 stars!!!

It's settled. I love Cam and Nic more than Irish and Whiskey! Sorry guys, you have to move! This couple is just so intense in a good kind of way that I can feel the love pouring off of them in waves! This book is a little different than others, I think, because here they don't just have a regular case investigation sprinkled with a dose of personal relationship, it's centered on family ties, opens doors to Cam's past and future.

When the call comes in the deep of the night, Cam drops everything to be with his family in their dark times. It's tense and filled with anguish but Cam has to stay strong because only he can bring his family resolution and peace that eluded them all since that fateful day that she disappeared. It's the hardest and the most painful case he has ever been involved in, and he will need all the help and support he can get.

Nic is set to be there for the man he loves but all is not simple. While his hand was forced many years ago to be in the open, Cam is not ready and that makes it even harder for Nic because he has to watch Cam tear himself apart over the tragedy that struck his family. There seems to be no change in the evidence but they get a lucky break - another girl is stolen, the trace is still fresh and they can find her and maybe put all the demons to rest.

It's thrilling, action-packed and engrossing investigation, all the stops are pulled out, no stone left unturned, and what they discover is horrible and atrocious but it finally lifts the cover of guilt and pain and brings relief and the ability to grieve and let go. This book is very emotional, very personal journey for Cam, and Nic is there to catch him when he drifts too far from the shore. I loved, loved, loved this book, Cam and Nic, Cam's family and all their friends! It was great! I highly recommend this book and whole spin-off!

NOTE: Craft Brew does not stand alone and should be read after Imperial Stout

I'm loving the Trouble Brewing series as much as I did Leyla Reyne's Agents Irish & Whiskey series, of which this is a spin-off. Interesting suspense plot that doesn't overshadow the romance, wonderful chemistry, and MC's that I love. Color me a happy camper!

Craft Brew starts off with a separation that takes Nic to San Diego for a few weeks. After the threats on his life, Nic feels the need to distance himself from those he cares about, to protect them. But things heat up again as Nic and Cam are briefly reunited, before a family emergency takes Cam back to Boston.

Craft Brew is all about family, in fact - both blood and chosen - and what that really means. Family watches your back, family chooses you, and family is always there.

We get to know Cam's family in Craft Brew. They're pretty tight, overall, but there is tension because of an old family tragedy. There is also a touch of delicious relationship angst that made me very happy. I just love the tension that gets created as our guys figure out where they really want to go.

I loved the pacing, the characters, the suspense, and definitely Cam and Nic. While Craft Brew does end with an HFN, our guys are definitely committed to each other. I can't wait for book 3!

Recommended.

Second part of Cam and Nick’s story and yeah…no disappointment here. I think I even enjoy this series a little bit more than the Irish and Whiskey series featuring Jamie and Aidan…it has to do with the underlying plot that feels more elaborate to me.

So, Cam, (35) an FBI agent and Nic, (45) US attorney are partnered in work and now in life as well, even if it’s only the beginning at this point. And Nic and Cam learn more and more about each other, about their past, about who they are. If Cam has previously shown his support to Nic, this time, Nic is totally present for Cam when needed, and he sure does need support and understanding with the family issues he’s facing. So much unsaid about the disappearance of Cam’s sister a couple of decades ago. It’s like opening a Pandora box : a lot was thrown on the table concerning Cam, his family, Nic as well and this new couple.

So many ticked boxes : MCs in their 30-40’s with some age-gap, a chemistry galore and a great dose of steam, plenty of feels and a deep connection that made me swoon, all this complimented with the right balance of plots, suspense and action and some family dynamics…I’m sold !!

Another win for this spin-off of the Agents Irish and Whiskey Series (which friends, yes, you must read that first).

There is definitely a formula in this universe and believe me, it totally works, really. As a girl who hates separation setups in my romance I kind of love how in these books it just sets up the longing and the hunger and well, the reunion. Add in all the danger and the family love and all my emotions come out to play.

This story packed quite the punch. We got a small taste of Cam’s childhood in Boston in the first book but this was so much more. Such pain, regret and guilt. The growth between these guys with each installment is perfection. The love, oh my God.

The storyline with Nic’s Dad is still happening in the background and I have a feeling that is what we are getting next. I pray that Nic won’t do what he’s talking about and I hope that what they’ve grown into in this book makes that a definite no.

So, yes, another winner; I can’t wait for the next one, I am sure it is going to be insane.

Cameron and Dominic's story continues, and trouble is definitely brewing.

Vaughn is still a threat four months later, although it's been quiet so far. But it's only getting worse, and Vaughn isn't backing down. Nic's father had to take out a mortgage on the house to keep paying Vaughn, but he's still behind on his payments. Things are starting to come to a head there.

But first, the main plot and mystery in this book, is Cam's sister's disappearance. When Cam gets a call from his family all the way in Boston that his mother had a heart attack, he races to get there.

Nic, having run away to San Diego for 5 weeks to cover for a lawyer who had been on paternity leave, came back, but that same day Cam gets the call and they barely get a chance to be together before Cam's leaving - and saying he doesn't Nic to come. Why?

We get an answer soon enough - Cam isn't out to his family yet, and with his mother in the hospital, he feels it isn't the right time to tell them he's bisexual and seeing a man.

Nic stays back in San Fran for 4 days working on the Vaughn case, but when Cam calls him for help, Nic goes to Boston.

The next few days or so, maybe close to a week even, is filled with both being pulled in all directions. A new girl is missing who might be tied to Erin's - Cam's sister - case, which Cam reopened personally at mom's request, and Cam and Nic are concentrating on that at the same time Cam has to worry about his mother, whose condition is worsening, and she might not make it. Also, Nic learns pretty damn quickly that Cam isn't out to his family.

Plus, there's everything happening with Vaughn that Nic still has to catch Cam up on when things aren't crazy.

Let's just say that it made for very little alone time between these two.

It frustrated me, which is why I took .5 stars off, how stretched thing they were that barely any time was dedicated to them and their relationship - except for at the beginning and the end, really. Plus, only two sex scenes? :( Disappointing lack of sexy times. What we had was good, but still.

I love Cam and Nic together, and the plot was interesting and their relationship did evolve and strengthen, but there is obviously going to be at least one last book to finish this series up. Truths still haven't been told.

But I did love seeing more of Cam's family and learning more about them and Nic being introduced to them and everything.

This was a solid second installment in the series for me - great plot, great chemistry between these two as always, and great character development. I just wish there had been a little more time dedicated to these two and their relationship - or just maybe even some private time between them.

Overall, I loved this and I can't wait for the third installment. I so badly want these two to get their HEA!

More intense than the first, this one worked so well with both the relationship building and the mystery. Cam is forced to deal with old family wounds and his own place in his family as he tries to fix things he has been feeling guilty about. His family is relentlessly obsessed with him finding a woman and settling down, yet the only one he can see himself settling down with, he is hiding from them.

Dom wants nothing more than to support Cam and is trying to be understanding of Cam's erratic behavior. He'll do anything to help out, even as he sacrifices his own feelings and potentially their relationship.

Plenty of drama, romance and creepy hunt for a serial kidnapper and killer all combined for a story that kept me on the edge of my seat with my emotions riding a roller coaster.

More serious turn of events in this book but still superb plotting

This one had a totally different feel to it than book one as it intimately involved Cameron's past and his biggest regret and guilty mistake - a case he'd never been able to solve.

Without going too much into the connection and the plot, there's more emphasis on the suspense and investigation elements in this narrative but there's still just as much attraction between the two men

Nic's still trying to avoid painting more targets on those he's beginning to realise are family and Cam's dealing with issues involving his own family back in Boston.

It's an interesting move to bring both men together but with huge fears still causing them anxieties but I think Layla pulls it off.

Tensions ramp up to a fitting end, it would have been difficult to narrate any other outcome I think but I would have liked perhaps a bit more of the aftermath from the legislative conclusions as well with the bad guy.

The tone of these is quite different to the Irish and Whiskey series but it's no less enthralling.

Cam & Nick really move into the fast lane in this book. Solving a 20 year mystery around the abduction of Cams sister unraveled guilt, pain and family angst. Nick was in fine form and played the perfect back up for Cam. This was fast paced with lots going on. Enjoyed this much more than book1 - will be keen to see how these two resolve the Vaughn issue.

This second entry in the series continues the exciting trajectory that book one promised. As the story opens, Nic and Cam are practically living together but when Cam wants to make it for real, Nic takes off. It’s only a temporary assignment but Nic is trying to protect Cam and keep him off Vaughn and his father’s radar. On the day of his return, trouble starts almost immediately with a fire at Nic’s building and Cam gets a call about his mom and has to head for Boston. When he faces his family, the details of his sister’s loss and Cam’s guilt over it finally gets fleshed out. He starts investigating her case once again, finding out his sister wasn’t the only disappearance over the years and that another has just occurred. Needing Nic’s assistance, he then faces the problem of not being out to his family and not having told Nic about it. I really liked Nic’s responses when Cam was presenting him as only a friend and colleague. He didn’t get all butt-hurt, remaining calm and understanding; he just hated not being able to touch and comfort Nic around his family.

Nic’s family was great, especially his mom and brother Bobby. Keith is the angry brother, as he was closest to their sister. Made me wonder if he’ll show up in another book. Detail around case work is just enough to satisfy my police procedural kink plus we’re given plenty of action and suspense to round things out and build up the tension. The heat level is pretty low because of all the activity, which is too bad but understandable. This episode is a little more character driven, with Cam’s family crisis being a big focal point. This leaves the resolution for Nic’s troubles for the next book, although a little more info gets added in between other events. The narrative is exciting and gripping but also provides a lot of warmth and feeling from the addition of Cam’s family and the assistance and support from their group of friends. After the more heartbreaking scenes, the ending does become a happy one putting Nic and Cam at a better point in their relationship. There's no cliffhanger, just not the completion of the story arc. This isn’t a stand-alone either, you must read book one at least but even then it’s helpful to read the Irish and Whiskey series, as those characters are intertwined with Nic and Cam. I’m anxiously awaiting the third book and hoping Nic and Cam get more quality time together!

I gave this a B- at AAR, so that's 3.5 stars rounded up.

Although I wasn’t wild about Imperial Stout, the first book in Layla Reyne’s new Trouble Brewing series, I wanted to read book two, Craft Brew, because I was intrigued by what was clearly going to be the series’ overarching plotline, and hoped for progression. I got a little of what I wanted, but Ms. Reyne is clearly keeping her powder dry for the final book, Noble Hops, so Craft Brew focuses on a different story and shines a light on a past tragedy and a desperate search for closure.

In Imperial Stout, Assistant US Attorney and former Navy SEAL, Nic Price, discovered that his father – from whom he has been estranged ever since he came out more than twenty-five years earlier – was in hock to some pretty unsavoury characters. Knowing them to be ruthless gangsters who will stop at nothing to get what they want, Nic tried to keep this news to himself out of concern for those around him, especially for his lover, Special Agent Cameron Byrne. Of course, the truth will out, and Cam found out about the threats made against Nic and his father, but Nic fears for Cam’s safety should anyone discover they’re a couple, which is why he stubbornly avoids giving Cam an answer to the latter’s suggestion they move in together.

Nic has just returned from five weeks spent in San Diego covering for an absent colleague and he’s pretty much just set foot inside his front door then where’s a fire in his apartment block – in the apartment right above his – which is quickly proven to be arson. This convinces him more than ever that he can’t afford to move forward with Cam until he’s got to the bottom of things – and in the middle of all this comes really bad news for Cam. His mother has had a heart attack and is in a bad way, and he needs to go home to Boston at once. Cam is understandably cut up and preoccupied as he gets ready to head home, and Nic senses there’s something else lurking behind his concern for his mother, but it’s not the time to tackle it. Cam sets off for Boston accompanied by Jamieson ‘Whiskey’ Walker, his long-time best friend and husband of Cam’s FBI partner, Aidan Talley.

The Byrnes are a close-knit family, and Ms. Reyne sketches the familial relationships well.  Cam is closest to his brother Bobby, with whom he shares a bit of a chequered past, but is not on the best of terms with his youngest brother Keith,  who still blames Cam for the disappearance of their sister, Erin, some twenty years earlier when she was just twelve years old. Cam has been weighed down by guilt he has never been able to assuage over what happened that day, because he was supposed to have met Erin to take her home, but instead, went off with Bobby to “score some real cash.” (We’re not told what that involved.) Cam has tried several times to find out what happened to Erin, but the case is so cold it’s dead and buried, and he’s been unable to make any progress.  But now, his mother begs him to take it up again, and even though the rest of his family are against the idea, Cam can’t possibly turn down what might turn out to be Edye Byrne’s dying wish.  Unbeknownst to him, she’s embarked on an investigation of her own over the years, making notes in the backs of her beloved romance novels; Cam agrees to go through them and then see if he can tie them into something that will give them some more concrete leads.

Craft Brew is a more cohesive read than Imperial Stout, which was short on character and relationship development, with a frenetically paced, somewhat superficial plot that required way too many suspensions of disbelief.  By the time this book opens, Nic and Cam are in a relationship although still keeping it quiet, and we’re learning a little more about what makes each of them tick. The storyline concerning the mystery of Erin’s disappearance – which turns out to be linked to a number of other disappearances of young girls over the past twenty years – held my interest, although I can’t deny that there are still some very creaky plot elements (how was Cam’s mum able to come up with so much information while Cam, a highly trained FBI agent, wasn’t able to?) and unlikely coincidences along the way that stretched my credulity paper thin.

After reaching the section where Cam goes to Boston leaving Nic behind, I wondered whether they were going to spend the rest of the book apart, which is never a good recipe for a romantic novel.  Fortunately, one of those coincidences I mentioned means that Nic’s presence is required in Boston and naturally, there’s no way he’s not going to haul ass in order to be with and help the man he can now admit he’s in love with.  But that little niggle Nic had as Cam was leaving?  It turns out that Cam has never told his family he’s bisexual; and it’s obviously not the right time to come out to them now.  Nic is understanding and supportive, and puts no pressure of any kind on Cam, rightly saying that telling them is his decision… but he also makes it clear that while he’s prepared to wait for Cam to come out to them in his own time, he doesn’t want to wait forever.

I like Cam and Nic, I like the secondary cast of familiar characters from the  Irish and Whiskey  series and the close-knit relationships between them and I enjoyed meeting Cam’s family and finding out a bit more about his past, which was something missing in the previous book.  We also learned more about Nic and the secrets he’s keeping, although it’s clear there is more to come, and Cam has yet to learn some of the things the reader is now privy to – which I’m guessing will happen in the next book.

But the plot contrivances I mentioned above drag the book down as a whole, and I lost count of the number of times Nic told Cam to ‘just breathe’ at times of stress and worry. I also had to wonder at the way the author so often brings up Nic’s former rank as a SEAL captain as a way of impressing people or getting them to do things.  Would it really be that big of a deal given he’s been a civilian for well over a decade?  Small things maybe, but they took me out of the story each time I came across them.

I’m going to give Craft Brew a cautious recommendation with the caveat that if you haven’t read the previous book – or the  Agents Irish and Whiskey  series – you’re likely to be completely lost.  If you’re already invested in the  Trouble Brewing  series and characters, then this is an enjoyable, if flawed read that satisfied at least some of this reader’s need for more character growth and development in the central relationship.

I enjoyed this story much more than book one. First, because I knew the MCs, and second, because past characters came into this story slowly and their backstory was filled in. Building on the drama surrounding Nic’s father and the events of book one, this story added more, but it appears the resolution to that will not occur until book three.

The early section of the story surrounds Nic and his father’s debts and his budding relationship with Cam. On the heels of Cam asking Nic to move in, Nic takes a temporary 5-week assignment in San Diego, in other words he chooses to run from the commitment, making the moving in a moot point. On his return, someone sets fire to his apartment building—another disaster in a long line that seems to be following Nic wherever he goes. He worries that if he lets his relationship with Cam become common knowledge, whoever is causing the trouble for him might go after Cam.

With no choice after losing his apartment, though, he agrees to move in with Cam. Then just as they start to settle in, Cam’s past comes crashing down around him. His mother has had a heart attack and when he flies home to Boston to see her she asks that he solve the cold case of his sister’s disappearance twenty years before. A disappearance that Cam feels personally responsible for since he was supposed to pick her up the day she disappeared, but he blew her off, leaving her to head home alone.

What he finds when he starts to investigate is that his sister may have been the first of a long line of girls to disappear in that area, and he calls Nic to help. Cam also needs his love and support, but since he’s not out to his family, he has to hide those needs and simply introduce Nic as a friend and colleague. Of note, Nic was super mature in his support of Cam and didn’t throw a hissy fit or downgrade his love for Cam just because Cam couldn’t face coming out.

The action is fast-paced and interesting, involving both brainwork and footwork and involving Jamie from the previous series. Since I didn’t read that series, I appreciated the author’s handling of his insertion in this story and the background information we were given. It was much easier to assimilate and in fact I do believe I’m going to have to purchase Single Malt to see what all the fans are raving over.

I digress. Cam and Nic do solve the mystery, and Cam does come out to his family, unable and unwilling to hide his love for Nic from the world. That was a great scene as was the family support in putting Erin’s body and memory to rest. We had a lot of opportunity to get to know Cam’s family, and I’d sure be happy to see either Bobby or Keith or both show up in a future book.

This doesn’t end on a cliffhanger, but it’s quite evident that Nic’s story—involving his father’s finances and a gangster who doesn’t seem to take no for an answer—will continue into the next book. I’ll be in line for that one, for sure.

Audiobook Review

4,5 stars

I liked this book more than the first one. There was just something about it that had me hooked from the first minute, and keep me in the book with an iron grip. I had a really tough time putting it down and enter RL again, and I was just wishing to get back to the story again to find out what happened next.

Craft Brew feels more personal than the first book. It starts with Cam promising his ill mother to once and for all finding out what happened to his sister two decades ago when she vanished without a trace. In a desperate attempt to fulfil his mother’s wishes he enlists Nic for help, something that might just have some of his tenuous walls crumbling.

Digging up the past is harder than he ever thought possible and he meets resistance at every turn - even from his own family. Emotions run high and the stakes are even higher, but I think that's what makes this book so great. It is jammed pack with feelings, it's messy and wonderful. The characters and their reactions feel genuine, it's not all hearts and flowers. Sure there's a lot of love, but there is also a lot of hurt, past and present. It was all handled just beautifully. In a way that makes you believe in the characters, they just feel real.

Tristan James is not one of my favourite narrators. But he does narrate some of my favourite books, or my most anticipated ones. So he's kind of like that one relative you don't really like. The one's that is always at gatherings, the one you have to hang out with if you want to spend time with the rest of the family. Tolerated for the greater good. James is mostly like that for me. His deliverance is mostly monotone and kind of flat, it lacks emotion and connection to the story and characters. To me that's what makes a great narrator, being able to add that emotion, the range of voices.

For the most part we never get that emotion with James. He is brilliant with accents and has a very nice voice, but it also ends there. But this is also kind of okay, because I expect it going into one of his books, it's never news or a surprise to me. It's a known factor and I went into this book with my eyes wide open. Here's the kicker though, this time around James held my attention from the get go. I was present, I was connected, I was there. A rarity for me, but one I was happy to discover.

This series keeps getting better and so far Craft Brew is my favourite in the series and I just can't wait to see what happens next. The story is far from over and Nic and Cam haven't quite reached their happily ever after just yet.
Highly recommended.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4.5 stars

raft Brew is the second book in Layla Reyne’s Trouble Brewing series, a spin off set in her Agents Irish and Whiskey world. In the first book, we got the set up for three different series threads: the relationship between Nic and Cam, the mystery of Cam’s past, and the threats against Nic (along with some mysteries about his own past). I really appreciated how well this second story advances all of those areas. Often the second book in a trilogy will feel a lot like a placeholder, or things can seem stagnant. But Reyne does an excellent job here giving us progress on all fronts and really keeping this middle book exciting and intriguing.

I don't know why this wasn't on my list of books read this year. I got a sneak peek of this from Layla ages ago, and also listened to the audio book on the way home from GayRomLit.

This is probably one of my favorites of Layla's. I loved Cam and his family and how they pulled Nic into that orbit. Bits were bittersweet, but the whole thing was just awesome and pulled at the heart. And it's a lovely setup for the end of Nic and Cam's story (which I've also read).

I enjoyed this second installment of the Trouble Brewing. I like this couple way more than the couple of the original series.

Nic and Cameron's relationship is still very new. They haven't told their friends they're dating and they've been apart for a month or so while Nic works in San Diego. Nic is struggling with his feelings for Cameron and the issues with his father.

Cameron gets a call that his mother is ill and he leaves for Boston. This leads to Cameron reopening the case of his missing sister. Cameron is also having some issues in regards to their relationship. Namely that he isn't out to his family.

The book is part solving the mystery of the missing girls and part Nic and Cam's relationship. I enjoyed both aspects and thought this was another solid book in the series. It's probably best to not read this as a standalone.

YES ... as good as the first time

October 2018
I loved the first book and the second one is no different. Maybe I am biased as I love Layla REynes books (definitely auto buy) and I especially loved the Whiskey and Irish series. so this series is great because of that alone.

but I really like Nic and Cam - both have their flaws and their hero complex. this book is more abouth Cams demons and Nics are a bit in the background. which is totally fine.

I have to confess, I like Nic better than Cam (whom I really like .... so as you can see, both characters are loved by me ;) ) and I enjoyed that Nic and Jamie found a common ground.

all in all, for me a real treat and I loved it. can't wait for the next one

Layla Reyne continues to show why she is one of the best in this genre here with Craft Brew. With solid writing, a strong plot, and characters who you want to keep following I was dragged quite willingly back into this series for another round of Cam and Nic’s story, and more development of their relationship.

This time around there’s family drama on Cam’s side that takes him back home to Boston, which leads him to take another look at a very personal case…one that he needs help to try and solve, and which is the center of this story. This leads to Nic coming to help, but since Cam is not out as bisexual to his family you already know there’s going to be some tension regarding that fact. There is also the continuation of the issue with Nic’s father going on in the background, so we get to learn more about that though it is not the focus of this book.

You’ll find the action and suspense that we’ve all come to expect with this author’s books, along with a strong dose of family and of course the furthering of Cam and Nic’s relationship. Tension levels remain high for much of the story, and while we do get closure on the main case in this particular story, there’s still more to come on Nic’s side with his father and the mess with Vaughn. We do get some pieces of that here, but just enough to keep everyone on edge for where the series is going.

Craft Brew was just as good as—if not better than—Imperial Stout, and just made me become even more invested in Cam and Nic’s relationship. This was a clear 5-star read for me, and I really can’t wait for the third book to come out to feed my need for more of these guys! This book is not meant to be read as a standalone; you really need to read the series in order, and for the most enjoyment I’d recommend reading the Agents Irish and Whiskey series first so you can get the full background of the supporting characters you’ll see here. Craft Brew is meant for readers 18+ for adult language and sexual content.

I enjoyed the first book, but I REALLY enjoyed this one.

Cam and Nic are still struggling to cement their relationship. Not that Nic isn't out and proud, he just doesn't want to risk Cams safety while he's dealing with his father's "issues" and he doesn't want to come between Cam and his SD family.

Nic didn't have much of a childhood, so the concept of family is foreign to him, he's struggling to try and become that with Cam, Jamie, Aiden and Mel.

Meanwhile, Cam gets called back home as his mothers in a bad way and she makes him promise to finish what he tried to start 20 years earlier. There's a lot of tension between the Byrne brothers and the intensity level is definitely increased in this book.

The third book we'll still be dealing with Nic's dad. Discovering what Nic's tattoo represents, I hope we find some closure with that as well

As always, Layla leaves me with many cravings, usually for food. This time it's for stout. I absolutely love the name and logo she chose! It really makes me want to go drink lol
