Dirty Rubles: An Introduction to Trump/Russia

Rate this book
Trump/Russia is the greatest political scandal in American history. It’s also the most complex. In this remarkable and necessary work, novelist Greg Olear weaves the loose threads of Trump/Russia into a short, easy-to-follow narrative. Dirty Rubles is an ideal primer for those new to the story, a useful review for those already in the know, and a guidebook for the agnostic #MAGA fan—a compelling overview of Trump/Russia that every American should read. "If ignorance is your bliss, Dirty Rubles isn't for you. Greg Olear deliciously tears down that barrier Trump has erected between the truth and the American people. —Cheri Jacobus, USA Today columnist, political pundit and Trump target “While Donald Trump represented the greatest threat to the United States since the Civil War, the US Media abdicated its duty to tell the American people the truth. Luckily, skilled writers and patriots like Greg Olear stepped into the fray, keeping readers rapt as he helped condense complex conspiracy into lucid narrative. Dirty Rubles is a long-form version of that lucidity, a cogent book that will catch people up to speed as they realize the story of the century was kept from them. To help America get back on track, read this book and share its insights with family and friends.” —Eric Garland, strategic analyst, author of Future How Businesses Can Anticipate and Profit from What’s NEXT and How to Predict the Future and Win.

A lightning fast yet detailed read providing an excellent summation of the insanity we find ourselves in right now, spanning 2016 to last month. And yes, I read it with a hi-lighter poised to keep track of all the lied-about meetings, contacts, shady business deals, etc. Of course I did. Highly recommended.

Speaking Truth To Power

This book is a Cliff’s Notes of the Trump Russia connection. It connects the dots between various factual actions taken by Trump associates and the conspiracy perpetuated against the citizens of the United States. Some of the connecting lines are razor sharp, some blurred, and some speculatively dotted. In the end, a single candlelight of truth will not be extinguished by a world of dark lies.

*And I still feel the same, every day, because in all ways, Dirty Rubles lays out a reality we will be dissecting for years to come.

The greatest, the biggest, the whatever superlative might fit. And Olear is so good he even searched on Wikipedia how the Russian coins are called.

A quick and dirty summary of the Trump/Russia scandal. He touches on all the major points and players. If you don’t want a major time investment this is a good start. Personally, I would suggest Russian Roulette. I think he’s got a fair bit of bias against Comey and Obama, and that it isn’t really justified. And since I am listening to the audio I am knocking off a full star for his narration. It is juvenile and hurts his credibility.

A fantastic summary of events. If you haven't been keeping up, a good way to catch up. If you have been keeping up, a good way to review. I needed this simply to confirm that the pieces I had been putting together still fit together the way I thought they did. Greg Olear is a hero.

When I came across Greg Olear’s column on Twitter about a year ago, I was so struck by his political acuity and concise writing, it felt like he was speaking to me. People like Olear, Louise Mensch and Bill Palmer are the Nixon-era Woodward and Bernstein of our time but working at 10 times the pace to keep up with the barrage of crimes being committed by Trump and the GOP.

Today’s journalists post almost hourly updates with important insight and factual accuracy. Dirty Rubles also provides a wider perspective. In the ongoing struggle to stay updated while also remaining sane, Olear has been a bolstering voice.

As someone who has read almost all the latest books about events leading up to the final days of Trump, although I knew most of the facts, there were some big ones I had missed. That’s why this book is so important. Although the Dirty Rubles timeline ends shortly before the gut wrenching Khashoggi murder in October 2018 and well before the premature termination of the Mueller investigation in April 2019, it is an important logbook of the horrible legacy of a crook installed to the most powerful position in the world.

Olear prefaces the book as a summary of events, which is true for those who have not followed in real time and/or read other books on the subject. But for political junkies like me, it is more than that. It recaps timeline in shocking detail, and it could probably be used in law schools and even by state and federal attorneys general to aid in their ongoing investigations of Trump and his corrupt GOP co-conspirators.

Some may find it skewed anti-Republican, but to them I say, prove it. It is pure fact. I hope Olear is planning on releasing an updated edition or a whole second book detailing the remaining months of chaos.

I know I shouldn't fault a nonfiction book for what happens long after its publication, but I can't help being disappointed by Dirty Rubles after the completion of the Robert Mueller investigation, which seems (at this moment) to have absolved Donald Trump and his campaign of any collusion with the Russian government. Yes, the book is intended as a backgrounder in Trump/Russia, but it's also a partisan, steady buildup to a conclusion that happens after the final page - a conclusion (at this moment) that refutes most of the book's premise.

I think this could be enjoyable for someone who is very skeptical and can appreciate that this is all VERY speculative. But reading it and finding myself believing some of the stuff that's merely speculation, I had to put it down. I'd rather read something that's based in verifiable fact and not get caught up in what "might have" happened.

Information that was needed before 11/16

The writer has a great deal of information about Trump and Russia in this but it's just scratching the surface of the conspiracy and crimes committed. It ends before the downfall of Manafort and Cohen, Ukraine, the pandemic. It's just the very early days of this criminal organization in the White House.

Read this book like your life depends on it. And it probably does. It’s 2025 and the Orange monster ours back in power, seemingly with no restrictions. Read and do all you can to stop him and his criminal, billionaire comrades.

A very short summary that could have been a New Yorker article, if the obscenities were removed, but costing $9. The small fraction that you haven't already heard is conjecture.
