Rate this book
Now ruler of the Sidhe, Scarlett must learn how to be the queen her people need.

Since absorbing the power of The Life Tree, everything has changed. Scarlett is queen of a realm, until a few weeks ago, she didn’t even know existed and has more magic than she ever thought possible. But she worries it still isn’t enough to protect those she cares about or to find a way to bring Raith, who had sacrificed himself to save his mother, back.

With a looming war against a new enemy no one knows much about, Scarlett and Kaelem must find as many allies as they can. When a magical book teaches Scarlett dark magic, she must decide how much of herself she will risk becoming the leader everyone needs her to be.

I feel like I've said this with every book in this series, but yet again, Raith was my favorite character. It was so cool to see his choices, and the things going on inside his head.

I loved the new magic in this book, and the consequences of using it. Scarlett did some dumb things in this book, but it didn't bother me at all. Instead of being annoying, they just seemed like the kind of mistakes anyone might make in those circumstances. I thought that was pretty cool.

I still want more of Cade and Poppy. But it was nice to see them make mature decisions too. Can't wait for the next book!

I thought this was the last book in the series. 😭 Around the time that 94% rolled around I realized it can’t be and I was correct. 😶 I still have so many questions! 🤷🏻‍♀️

Blog | Twitter | Instagram | As a note, a copy of this novel was sent to me by the author in exchange for my review. This does not effect my opinion. Review also found here.

Holy crap, you guys. This. Book. Was. Wild. Although, if you've read the explosive, fantastical Whims of Fae series you know that everything usually is. A Dark Eternity was so brilliant, fast paced and thrilling, I almost couldn't catch my breath. Describing it one word? Fiery. Once again, Nissa Leder enthralled from the first chapter and as the story unraveled, the more wrapped up in the story I became. (Insert obligatory: hello, hey, hi, Nissa Leder is SO UNDERRATED, buy her work, remark here.)

Also, can we take a moment to swoon over the delicious makeover the cover art was given recently? I'm still not over how beautiful they are. Can I marry a book based on its cover-art? And, *Magnus Bane voice* I'm back. Got a little distracted looking at its cover, again. Word of advice? Add pretty cover art to your review after writing it, or else you'll* get too distracted.

*Just me?

Anyways, where to begin with A Dark Eternity? First of all: this series just keeps getting better and I am probably forever yelling about how good it is. I felt like, after the previous books conclusion, this was going to be darker than the first three books and I was totally right. It has such a fitting name. So. Much. Has. Happened. So much will continue to happen. Scarlett's world, and powers, keep getting bigger and honestly? I am here for it.

As per usual, Nissa Leder's worldbuilding skills are on-point. The romance is ON FIRE. And angsty. I'm not crying, you're crying. I loved seeing the dynamic between Kaelem and Scarlett grow deeper and more physical. I wasn't wholly sure it was going to head where it has when we first met Kaelem and while I started out as team Raith (my son, aha) I'm officially torn between the two.

A Dark Eternity gives us a lot of answers about the fates, new developments there, Scarlett's mother and father, a little more Ashleigh and some romance blossoming. Much like with the series as a whole, this installment will keep you on the edge of your seat in wonder and interest. Leder is the type of writer that will grip you and not let go.

I highly recommend this book, and this series, to any fantasy lover. ASAP. It's fast become one of my favourite series and it truly is criminal how underrated it, and Nissa Leder, is. A Dark Eternity is can't miss and full of so many twists and turns, it just begs to be read.

I'm happy to see the author taking her story in a direction that separates it from other novels I've read. I enjoy this series, although I must say I'm quite ready for the conclusion.

A whirlwind story!

Ok let me first start off by saying, the grammatical errors in this story were just atrocious and so many it was appealing. I would have rated this 3 stars but the story surpassed the bad so this is why I gave it 4 stars. For the love of good reading, I need this author to get it together and proofread and their editor should be fired if they can double check correctly, anyway enough of that.
The story was literally non stop action all the way through and we found out so much more of Scarlett's life that we didn't know, I feel like a lot of questions have been answered but is there going to be a book 5? Because the story left off like there would be.
Also I have more questions about here sidhe heritage but I don't want to let out any spoilers. This may have been the best book of the series.

Took me a while to get back into this world as it's been a while since I read the last book, but I forgot how much I love it. My ship of is well and truly cemented. I can't believe I ever though was the one for her.

We had some great reveals in this book and I can't wait to read the next one!

I struggled a bit with this one, partially because I took a long break after book three. Partially because, up until the end of the book, I really didn’t like Scarlett again. I love Sage and enjoy reading from Kaelem’s point of views though!

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Not as enjoyable as the past books but still really fun. The pacing was a little slow and I found myself getting bored in some parts. Overall I am still really having fun with this series and looking forward to the next.

PS - Kaelem > Raith. There I said it.

Best one so far!

This was the best one of the series so far! I loved how the characters developed into more fully realized and multifaceted people, and even though some of the plot twists were predictable they were incredibly exciting and enjoyable.

I DEVOURED this book. Like. Always.

First of all. I ship Scarlett and kaelem, Raith can suck it. I'm over him. Done. He had his chance. He forfeits his role in this triangle. Ive baned him from participating in this any longer. Over it! Lol. Second.. Anyone else wish this got a little steamier? 😏
(P.s. does kaelem remind anyone else of magnus bane?? Mixed with someone else I cant put my finger on?).

Okay, lets get serious here. Scarlett is a crazy fool, but somehow she figures her life out. I'm a proud mama. Couldn't be happier. These fae are growing up so fast! 😅 BUT not too fast you know? They are going at just the perfect pace. I am still loving the character development. I noticed even more in this book the different paces and styles of relationship developments there are in the series. It really adds depth to the story. I find myself rooting and caring about more than just the main MAIN relationship. Which is a change of pace. Usually there is only one relationship focus. This one has many. I find myself shipping more than one couple. I am loving all the relationship developments in the story, romantic or not. There are toooo many to list, I would be here forever trying to gush about it.

Scarlett is developing into a force to be reckoned with. SERIOUSLY she kicked BUTT in this book. I am HERE for kaelem's character development. At first he was just a sassy mouth to laugh at, but now he is pulling at my heart strings. I want more. Give me all you got Nissa. I can handle it. Raith. *sigh* you were once my favorite. Look how far you have fallen.. I vote you off the island. You need to do some serious groveling. I'm not sure you can come back from this dumpster you crawled into. Ashleigh, Ashleigh. I seriously disliked you from the start. Thought of you as that spoiled selfish brat.. But you have grown a heart. I almost didn't think it was possible. Cade and poppy, I love the slow burning romance you guys have. I hope in the next book there is more between you two, but at the same time I am enjoying how their relationship is slowly building. Sage and Aria need a serious lesbian ship. YES.

I have a serious book hang over, all I want to read about is more fae. But I want to read more about THESE fae. I. Need. More. Fae. I can't wait for the next book. I, seriously, never want this story to end. My heart is invested. My soul is invested. I AM invested. And I'm strugging not to gush and spoil all of the little details.

¿¿¿Next book where you at???

*Recieved an arc copy. Yada yada yada. You know the drill*

One thing that does bug me about this book (and series), and I suppose most books that have a connection to modernity rub me the same way, is the random usage of slang and terms that really date and place a book. Saying "diss" instead of "insult" really takes away from the book's atmosphere and makes it sound less refined. I suppose one could say it's a lingering reminder of Scarlett's mortal upbringing, but I don't think that was the author's intent. I think the author just went with everyday vernacular, since all the characters use words like that even though there's an alternative that still sounds okay but doesn't have that same "people in 201X say that!" vibe.

It's not necessarily that I'm like against the use of slang, but I feel like trying to use it in books is always a guaranteed way to write your book and characters into a corner and no matter how else the book is written, it's automatically given this casual, inelegant air and it personally really rips me out of a story. I know that this book is like faerie-world exists alongside the human world, but I think too much reminder of the human world really detracts from the immersion, especially when these words are used by non-human characters.

I don't know. I feel like slang and modern vernacular tend to be best left to actual speaking with people and books should opt to use these things sparingly, even in a modern context. As much random vernacular as I pick up each year, I don't just insert the term because I can. There's a time and place for everything.

Otherwise, the story is still engaging, but wildly simplistic. I'm starting to feel like like this story is a really good outline for the plot points that a lot of other stories have utilized because we're checking off a lot of them. I'm still interested because the author is laying and trying to keep things all connected and meaningful to the story in some way, but like... I see what's up.

4 down 2 to go!

This was okay except for one thing. I thought I was at the end of the series when in fact there's two more books and the worst news of all was that the last book is impossible to get. There's no audiobook and you can't even buy the physical book anymore.

I'm feeling very saucy about that. I don't start a series if there's no end in sight and this is just frustrating.

The book itself was okay. Some of the mysteries are revealed. Some of the characters are more developed and the author plays around with the dark side of personalities which is interesting but also a little bit 180 for some of them.

And not in the good way where you feel like you're relating to an actual person, but more in the that was really a cop out kind of writing.

Overall though the world building is still interesting, some of the build up to the clashes of the little overdone for what actually happens but yeah it was okay. I guess I'll have to go read reviews on the last book for those people who are actually fortunate enough to be able to get it and read it.

Narration was okay, but honestly sometimes people really need to pull out the dictionary and see how to pronounce words instead of just faking it because it just doesn't work.

Lastly spoilers
For someone who has been obsessed with saving her sister regardless of any cost, she seems to have very little interest in her parentage or questioning if those who cared for her when she was younger were actually her parents. Especially when she discovered that she was Queen and that her grandmother was the previous queen.

It's a strangely large oversight

Meanwhile we've all known Like was her father since he was first introduced, which makes her disinterest even more strange.

Scarlett: "I'm going to do something stupid and acknowledge that it's stupid to make it seem like maybe I'm not actually stupid, but then do it anyway."

(Bad things happen)

"...Well that was stupid, I shouldn't have done that."

Face-palm.

There were a number of my questions answered, some of my hunches confirmed, and a lot of irritating character things beyond the aforementioned Scarlett moment. For example,

Despite my complaints, there is also a lot of good here. The story has become much less derivative and there's plenty of action and overall interesting plot going on. The reveals made around Scarlett's heritage were fun and though I suspected some if it, I didn't guess it all. The author has managed to subvert my expectations more than once during the series. I'm deep enough in at this point that I am invested in how it ends.

So as the previous books before it, A Dark Eternity picks up right where the previous one leaves off. It is an easy transition and flows perfectly together. One thing to point out as well is the seamless transitions between character scenes throughout all books! Some books are very choppy and I’m always weary of books with so many character stories (ex. The Dark Artifices) but this one is flawless!

So much has happened with this series and I know there is more to come! This instalment has been a roller coaster with twists and turns no one saw coming! I very much started out on team Raith but can we take a moment to appreciate the awesomeness of Kaelem?! I look forward to seeing where that goes for sure.

We have lots of information given to us on all main characters, including the Graces. We learn more about each individual character with more on the horizon. The world building is absolutely brilliant-throughout the whole series thus far. I can not stress that enough!

The romance is wickedly good-it definitely delivers the feels and leaves you wanting more (in a good way!). The characters are actually quite relatable and the description of each court is phenomenal.

I can’t stress enough how brilliant this series is! I really have grown to love this series and I feel like it’s an under appreciated series and Nissa Leder definitely deserves more recognition and love from the YA and fantasy readers community!

At this point I'm just expecting every book to be full of grammatical errors and typos and *sigh* I was right. Please, PLEASE find a new beta reader. Or just look through all the errors I logged on kindle, I pretty much did the job for you. I get annoyed about this because it has so much potential and yet I can't understand how these errors slipped through so many eyes.

I kind of wanted to slap Scarlett multiple times in this book. She chose to hide away in the library reading dark magic to actually learning how to use her magic in a useful way or learning how to fight properly with Rowen or Vida. And then creates a portal to the most dangerous area of the realm where literally everyone wants to kill her, by herself without letting anyone know and then omg shocker it doesn't go too well. Again Kaelem to the rescue! If he hadn't smashed the vial around Decuma's neck then Scarlett would have been well and truly screwed. I'm glad Raith came back to normal but I'm sensing the love triangle might finally be ending. Hurrah!

This is the 4th book and the main character, Scarlet, has not grown at all! I’m so tired of the female main characters in these stories being so unsure, whiny, and ignorant. Why can’t the heroine begin by being strong/ independent while learning through the tests of her strengths? I think maybe these books are meant for a younger audience, but I don’t want my daughter to read these when she is older. The books have been very predictable with the exception of the grandmother in the book. Girls do not have to begin by being weak, and you can have a love relationship develop without a triangle or people within that triangle having to continually save the girl. Raith is dead weight as a love interest. Focus on the struggles of Scarlet and M. They are worthy by themselves.

Scarlett was hugely annoying in this book. How dumb can you be to trust partial visions and venture off alone when you’re scared of your own magic 🙄

Kindle copy had typos.

Dumb uses of words continued.

Despite this it held my interest and I’m eager to see how this plays out.

Raith or Kaelem. My wish is the latter 🤭

But her heritage...I knew Laik was her daddy but hadn’t guessed he was half unseelie. But Kaelem did say the pill would only work if she had unseelie blood...so the former queen had a unseelie bae! Wonder if it was Kaelem’s dad or granddad...

This book has kept me enthralled through the whole book. I never wanted to put it down. I enjoyed the ever growing characters in this series. Fingers crossed for Cade to continue on the path he’s on. Oh Kalem!! I hope him and scarlet get together and marry!!! That would be the best! Wrath, wellllll. Not sure I like his turn of character. I really didn’t like his timidness anyways. Like Kalem’s, take what you want attitude. All of the characters are growing as fae. I’m enjoying it. Can’t wait for the next book in the series. Fingers crossed.

I've been binge reading this series thinking it was a complete series, however I was wrong. This aggravates me.

There is so much left up in the air. So many loose ends, I really have no idea what direction the story will go. If I had known this wasn't the last book, I am not sure I would have kept reading the series. It was not bad but I put on hold reading other books I really wanted to read to read this series only to find out it's not finished.

Anyone know when the next book will be out?

Great again 👍

Just like all before the action came at the right time. This time the good side took a hit but i cannot wait to see what is in store. As before I said i loved Scarlette as much as everyone in the book well, I'm starting to root for her and Kaelem 😈😍😘😵😱 I know, I know but I can't help it. I was also glad to learn more about Scarlette's past.

Great ending

I think this series is becoming my favorite because of how fast action everything is. Also, I am loving how you can see what others are going through at the same time that the others are in a different situation. I can’t wait u til Scarlet learns how to use her powers cause she is going to be so strong and we haven’t seen it yet

I guess i have lost any patience for stupid stories. Sometimes it's better to drop a book than torture yourself to read it. This is a prime example. Book 4 and I still don't see any good qualities in any of characters. I still hate them and I still dislike the story. So, I decided to say goodbye to these series and move on. I recommend everybody to do the same.

A page turner!

The characters in the books have grown significantly since book one and the author has done a wonderful job of intertwining their fates and building on their relationships! This series starts slow, but will have you hooked before you know it!
