Melissa Gladstone is up and running again - her new store in Dellville is successful and her old shop in LaChance is being rebuilt. Delighted at the thought of making a new friend, Missy is over the moon with excitement when a woman from California buys the ice cream shop across the street. After a few odd slips of the tongue, coupled with the odd hours that the newcomer keeps, Missy begins to suspect that her new friend may be hiding something, and that the consequences might be deadly. Not everything is as it seems in small-town Louisiana, but Missy is determined to crack the case, even if it means losing a friend.
This was a very good book how ever I do wish the author had done more to make it more interesting. I look forward to reading more of this author's work.
This was book 4 in the series. I have not read book 2 or 3 so I may have missed some important details. What I saw was the romance started in book 1, had not advanced too much between the main characters. The second thing I noticed was the main character sure gets in lots of trouble! This was another quick read. Looking for something that you can just sit down and enjoy, well then go for it.
With construction progressing well on the rebuilding of her cupcake store in LaChance, Missy is spending most of her time at the Dellville store. Mrs. Clemmons tells her that she has a buyer for the ice cream store. Missy is both happy for the elderly lady and sad to see her leave. When the store actually sells, Mrs. Clemmons introduces Missy to the new owner, Echo Willis, who recently relocated from California. Missy welcomes Echo in the typical Southern style, but is a little concerned when Echo seems to have an attraction for Ian Nesbitt, Mrs. Nesbitt's nephew.
Missy has created a new Lemon Cupcake with a cream cheese frosting, that she feels will be a hit. She also give one to what appears to be a homeless man who uses her phone to call Mrs. Nesbitt about a job picking peaches. When Mrs. Nesbitt is found dead and one of the lemon cupcakes is found in the kitchen, Missy becomes the prime suspect. Because of his relationship with Missy, Det. Chas Beckett cannot investigate the case and it falls to Detective Gilbert Johnson. Missy feels that Det. Johnson is very abrupt, bordering on rude.
Who killed Mrs. Nesbitt? Who is the stranger who was looking for a job? Can Missy convince Det. Johnson of her innocence? Will Chas and Det. Johnson be able to find the killer?
This story focuses on some of the other characters found in the series. The story is fast-paced and has plenty of twists and turns.

I have to admit, I keep coming back to this series not because it's particularly good, but because I can bang out these books in an hour or so.
The plot is overly simplistic, even for a cozy mystery. There is very little foreshadowing, very little mystery, and even less surprise at the end.
In this particular book, it's baffling how the main character, Missy, is even a suspect. I think it was only used as a plot device to keep her and Chas apart in order to build a bit of angst and maybe some emotional conflict. Unfortunately, any opportunity to do so revolved solely around a couple instances of them telling the other 'I miss you,' and not a whole hell of a lot else. It also veers away from the standard cozy mystery format where the main character seems to stumble across the bodies, because in this instance, Missy doesn't, she's just an acquaintance of the victim.
The second the killer is brought on stage, you know immediately it's them (and if you don't, you've got to be pretty bad at contemplating mysteries) because it's so poorly done.
I get it though, this is a cozy mystery. It's supposed to be more about characterization than a whodunnit, but even the characterization is pretty badly done.
Will I read more? Probably, if only to pad my reading numbers for the year.
How Missy keeps getting in the middle of murder investigations as a prime suspect is beyond me. She works very hard with her muffin shop that she doesn't have time to commit murders but never less she keeps getting into the middle of it.
Though this is not the standard mystery book as she is not actively searching or helping much in the investigation, we still get to follow along. Chas keeps her so well informed that it is helpful. I will say though, the change in voice messes up the flow for me. Even though it is all written in 3rd person, when the focus is removed from Missy for only a few sentences without a break it's a little weird.
I do like that we get to know more information about Echo in this book. It gives the character more depth and a richer feel to the story. It is a good continuation.
Excellent series. This book had a storyline that made you keep turning the pages to see what would happen next. I love watching Missy and Chas develop their relationship and see the beginning of Missy and Echos’s friendship.
Things are going well for Missy. Her second bakery is busy, busy and her original shop is being rebuilt. She’s going to have a new business neighbor who is opening a vegan ice cream shop and she and Chas are enjoying their time together. So of course something has to go wrong and it does. A long time business friend is found dead and one of Missy’s cupcakes is on her table. Missy’s now a person of interest in the case and someone is trying to frame her. Missy isn’t leaving it up to the police to clear her name, she’s determined to do it herself!
Everything is moving along nicely with the construction on her original store and the new store is doing better, right? Until a strange man comes in and samples a new cupcake and takes one for his grandmother and then borrows her store phone to call about a job for peach pickers and from there everything goes straight to chaos, a neighbor is murdered, Missy is a suspect, someone puts hundreds of snakes in the new store and her new friend Echo who bought the ice cream store is dating the neighbors creepy grandson. Twists, turns, suspense and chaos ensue with more surprises than you can shake a stick at and the worst part is that she can't talk to Chas because it might compromise his career. Well all kinds of crazy things happen but in the end they find the murderer. Great read.
Once again, the newest, updated, revised book in this series doesn't fail to disappoint. The characters are people you want to know and the setting is someplace you want to live. And the mystery is always entertaining and fun to figure out.
I don’t know if I just like the rewrites or the fact that I love reading this series of cozy mysteries over again. Chas and Missy are just perfect for each other. And now the entrance of Echo makes it great.
I love your book series, it's fun reading and your main characters are great. Looking forward to more great adventures that keep me coming back for more. You are a good writer, keep up the great writing.
I really am warming up to this series with each new book. Missy is a great character that always finds herself in crazy situations. The stories are always entertaining and the mystery never dull.
Great series just hate that poor missy gets pulled into it blamed every time! Chas beckett the handsome detective comes to the rescue and along with the other detective figures out who really did it! Great set of character follow thru each book!
I admit I am a fast reader, but it would be nice to have these stories a little longer. The story line are nice but Missy always being a suspect gets a little over done. The romance should speed up some.
Another well written mystery with lots of twists and turns in this series. Missy makes a new friend of the new owner of the ice cream shop, but all is not right when Missy becomes a suspect in a murder case.
I finished Echoes of Murder and had to reread this one to figure out the ending to the first one. I love this series. I’m going to start them all over again
