Shinobu Ohtaka (大高 忍, born May 9, 1983 Tokyo, Japan) is a Japanese manga artist. She is best known for the creation of the manga series Sumomomo Momomo and more recently, Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic.
I swear, this series is a masterpiece. More people need to experience Magi. The fact that the show never got past season 2 is an actual crime against humanity.
Oh wow! There was a lot to take in compared to the previous volume. I've seen people getting tired of all of these information but I think it was necessary for the story to move on. I also admit that I too felt lost at some point because there were so many things in this volume.
First of all, with this volume, the backstory regarding Alma Torran and Al Thamen ends. These are some of the things that we learn in this volume.
-King Solomon and David -Ugo as the great magician and his true role and identity -Aladdin's origin -Al Thamen's origin -Il Illah and the rukh -Djinns and metal vessels
I liked it in general despite the fact that it was a bit tiring to read. We learn lots of interesting things and I am sure the following volume will be much better.
I tried, I really tried, but this is world is a hot mess.
World: I really tried, I really wanted to like the art, I started liking the art at the start of the series but by now the art is a bit messy and the swirls of magic try to be kinetic but it just is blobby and sense of motion is lost making it hard to follow. The characters also have weirdly elongated bodies and clearly the author has a fixation on the torso. The world building is the biggest issue I have with this series, well that and the story and the characters too but a large part of the reason I wanted to read this book was the world building and the setting and here, it’s a hot mess. The world’s laws and the magic system is all over the place and is there to serve the story which changes willy nilly all the time making the world fluid and without form. I don’t want to get into the details of it, I’m not all that interested in it anymore.
Story: The story is also a hot mess with story points and world building pieces coming together when the author wants it so, things are like sand and move around at the whim of the very very visible hand of the author and the set pieces she is clearly trying to set the story to. I think the perfect example of the issue I have with this story is the same issue I have with Capcom’s Biohazard series where the creator has stated very clearly that they create scenarios that they want to happen in the game and then the story and the world building stitches it together in order to achieve those scenarios. This is the case with Magi too, the story and the world building feels like wet clay and not all the pieces really fit (especially the world building) because the author is set on some things happening on the cuff and some logical leaps and just throwing out previous logic is needed to make it work.
Characters: This was the best part of the series and I really liked the first 4 issues of the book when we spent time with the three main characters and their journey. I loved their individual journeys and where they wanted to end up and the beautiful back story that was provided. Then the world expanded when we got to Balbadd and it just became Sinbad show (which I am not a fan of) and their individual stories just got washed away into this overly ambitious world and large cast of characters. We don’t have time to build these characters anymore and now for this book in particular it’s about Solomon and this other world and while it is good to get answers in the world building department the amount of characters is just too vast to allow for these great emotional moments to have been earned. Solomon is basic in his drive as are Sheba and all the other characters we see. Sure there’s some basic rudimentary drive to the characters but not the depth and relatability that I wanted to make it matter.
I’m sorry, I’m very negative in this review I know and it’s not just this book it’s the bubbling of frustration I’ve been having since Balbadd and argh...yeah I’m sorry. I’m done. This series is not for me.
Ah, Shit, here we go again.
Oh, the tragedy and twisted web that Ohtaka is creating! I'm hooked on the story but I have to say once again that I'm missing some of the lighthearted humor from the first volumes. This is turning into quite an epic that doesn't really leave room for laughs, but I loved that lightheartedness and it was why I fell in love with the series. My other complaint is that as detailed and gorgeous as the art is, I still had a ton of trouble being able to tell which character was which.
It's always entertaining to see how Japanese interpret elements of Christianity, and this volume was no exception. As usual, the cover art's my favorite part of the volume, though Ugo seems a little too built to look even kinda natural. Still like his character, though, even if he trends toward insecurity.
The past arc finally concludes in this volume. I (no surprise here) lovvveddd it. Everything ties so seamlessly with the present time and the main plotline. I wish we could know more about what being a god truly entails in this world.
Disclaimer: I watched the anime and needed to read the manga as I loved this story. Unfortunately, I binged every volume back to back each moment I was free so its hard to distinguish what happened in each volume.
4/5 estrelas

Setelah rangkaian BAM BOM BUM yg terjadi krn perselisihan ideologi antara bawahan dgn atasan, dan pemindahan seluruh tribe yg tersisa ke dunia baru oleh Ugo si magician terakhir yg terkuat (siapa yg menyangka?? O__O), maka kisah Alma Toran pun akhirnya selesai didongengkan Aladdin. Dan kembali ke present time. About damn time. Aku sampe stop baca utk sementara krn kisah Solomon puanjanggg bnr, bknnya tdk bagus, tapi sudah terlalu panjang dan bertele-tele apalagi kalo bacanya pake cara nunggu update-an chapter per chapter, ketimbang baca sekaligus beberapa chapter. So akhirnya aku nunggu sampe chapter-nya numpuk byk baru dibaca aja deh.
This Manga starts our humorous. I really enjoyed the characters at the beginning. The farther you read the deeper the plots become. Enjoyable at the beginning, and a must read for the later books. I can NOT wait for books 27 + Characters are real and raw. Everyone has there faults and I feel the author/artist dose a wonderful job of bringing everyones points of view, twisted though they might be, in to clear focus.
(note: I wouldn't recommend this manga for young teens. I fine the sexual innuendos pretty funny as an adult, but not really appropriate for younger audiences. Also the plot gets pretty dark at times. )
