"Captain" Reid wrote many adventure novels akin to those written by Frederick Marryat and Robert Louis Stevenson. He was a great admirer of Lord Byron. These novels contain action that takes place primarily in untamed settings: the American West, Mexico, South Africa, the Himalayas, and Jamaica.

Ever since my teenage years, I have had a soft spot for Mayne Reid, and I have always viewed him as an excellent storyteller. Although "The Cliff Climbers" is not his best work, it is entertaining nonetheless. Still, if you're not familiar with this author, I would recommend starting with some of his other books (for example, "The Headless Horseman" or "Osceola the Seminole").
