The aim of this book, based on extensive interviews, is to examine the evolution of five leading Australian Labor Party figures, from their teenage years to their present pre-eminence: Paul Keating, Graham Richardson, Leo McLeay, Bob Carr, and Laurie Brereton. It does so through their own eyes, as they grasp the principles of political success, interact with other party members and the world at large, and forge a strong bond of friendship with each other.
Their collective story is the story of the modern, election-winning Labor Party. Although their impact began in the New South Wales branch of the ALP, it has spread from there to the federal party and the Federal Parliament, and to the other states where Labor governments modelled on the pragmatic NSW model are now the norm.
