The Gnostic World is an outstanding guide to Gnosticism, written by a distinguished international team of experts to explore Gnostic movements from the distant past until today. These themes are examined across sixty-seven chapters in a variety of contexts, from the ancient pre-Christian to the contemporary. The volume considers the intersection of Gnosticism with Jewish, Christian, Islamic and Indic practices and beliefs, and also with new religious movements, such as Theosophy, Scientology, Western Sufism, and the Nation of Islam. This comprehensive handbook will be an invaluable resource for religious studies students, scholars, and researchers of Gnostic doctrine and history.
Honored to be the first intrepid dilettante/aspiring Gnostic to have ranked this big bad tome dedicated to the many currents of Gnostic thought. Textbook spans 1st century CE currents of Gnostic thought till late 20th century incarnations. Content is 5 star, but the classic textbook scholastic citation and lack of contractions drove me crazy. (Parentheticals after nearly every sentence in some chapters were a bit maddening). And nearly each chapter had a different authorial voice; some contributors more vapid in their discussion than others. If I had no prior contact with any form of gnosis, Hermeticism, or perennial thought, I would have probably caved after the first 100 pages. GOOD LUCK! And may we all gnosis better in the end.
