Small Town Teacher starts off with the protagonist driving somewhere in the country, thinking about how he wished he had taken time off years ago. His reverie distracts him, he drives off the road, and he and his car go over a cliff. His broken body is rescued by Jedediah and his boys, apparently traditionalist Christians living in a small farming community without Internet or access to modern media. Hero regains consciousness in great pain, sightless, and immobile. When he recovers, he meets and is immediately taken by Jedidiah’s niece, Hannah. Unfortunately, hero cannot remember anything about himself, including, name, family, or occupation. The attending physician, Dr. Whelp, senses a strong mutual attraction been hero and Hannah, and convinces Jedediah and other town leaders that hero can be given a new identity, marry Hannah, be adopted into the community, and be the teacher for the school run in the local church. Hero becomes Charles Herstal, and Hannah, who has just turned 18, has inherited her grandfather’s house and farm. Charles brings successful, innovative teaching techniques to the school. Then the fun starts. The plot is thick with dishonest land speculators, crooked politicians, murderous gangsters, competing intelligence organizations, a good Sheriff, State Troopers, special operations forces, a mysterious wanted man with a big handgun, and Charles’ wife from his life before amnesia. Read the book to get the delicious details.
Dr. Paksoy’s writing style has been honed in eight previous action-adventure novels, the Mayor of Pømpington trilogy, The Meeting, the Son of Sun trilogy (sequel to Mayor of Pømpington), and General Noah: Doctoral Student. The correctness of descriptions of characters’ techniques and implements, and the situations in which they find themselves, remind me of Tom Clancy. The author either has researched his topics, has good advisors, or has relevant personal experience. The heroes and heroines fall in love at first sight, and love each other completely and powerfully, and for extended periods. Wives, lovers, and children, and occasionally a hero, die or are killed by accidents or “baddies” in almost every story. I found each book very difficult to put down. If you can focus, you can read one in a day. Small Town Teacher is a good story with philosophy, personal relationships, action, and surprises. It’s a great read!
