Drake Morgan has kept his family secret from the humans for eternity, having no desire to put their existence out into the open like the other shifterkind. He lives a solitary life with his two brothers hidden on his farm deep in the backwoods of Northern Mississippi.
Every spring, their bears call to prepare their home for the arrival of a mating season. The search for their mates begins, and Drake has to rethink his disgust of humans when one of their females show up on his land, scenting of his destined mate. Morgan’s bear demands he keep her for himself, but he knows she will never accept his true nature.
Tessa Ward moved to this little town to hide from her abusive ex, taking two jobs to pay rent and put food on the table. Her position at the local parts store sends her into the heart of the country to make one simple delivery to the local farmer, Drake Morgan. Upon arrival, she is thrown into the world of the paranormal after one touch from the bear shifter and she finds out his true nature.
Mating season has arrived, and Drake is prepared to fight for the woman who is fated to be his bride. When his mate’s ex comes lurking around his sacred property, Drake will stop at nothing until his female is safe, even if it means killing a human…not that he cares for them anyway.
Theresa is a mother of two and the wife of a retired Air Force Master Sergeant. After seventeen years traveling the country, moving from base to base, the family has settled their roots back in Theresa’s home town of Olive Branch, MS., where she enjoys her time with old friends and family.
Theresa daydreams of the perfect love affair and takes those ideas to paper.
This is an excellent book if you are a Twilight fan. I possibly would have gave it a four, but for me; I've had enough of these type of stories for years. Non original to me.
The writing is well done, the story is good if you like these type of books.
If you read TH series about panther shifters probably you will know it's a tweak of that, the only difference it's a grizzly bear. Also, there are only three in the clan whereas panthers has a pride of 50 or more.
This one is a love story that involves the ex-husband as the protagonist. The highlight for me is the cooperation between the shaw pride and the Morgan clan. No matter how you detest others as the saying goes "no one is an island". You may need help one way or another.
I was a bit hesitant with this one as many reviews were unfavorable especially towards the hero Drake. I enjoyed the story well enough but it was pretty typical and standard in a way to other books I’ve read. It was a typical shifter novel with a posseive alpha male, this time a bear, and his human mate-hiding from someone in her past. There were little tidbits of information here and there such as her being turned into a bear that helped make the book more unique but it still feels very standard to me. Don’t get me wrong I still enjoyed it and shifters+damsel in distress are still very much my cup of tea. The book overall was fast paced and I think it was after the second or so time that he knew she was his and she “felt a pull to him” as well. Honestly after the first few chapters the hero wasn’t even a bit grumpy, sure at times when the situation called for it, but pretty quickly after meeting Tessa he calmed way down. From the many shifter books I’ve read Drake barely registers and it’s more repetitive mentions of his grumpiness that left me wondering. The climax wasn’t exciting and was over very quickly with the threat being ‘handled.’ I was disappointed the hero didn’t allow her to get revenge when she was just about to. How’s it his right when she’s the one who suffered? Overall good quick read.

Blah. The H is a jackass who hates everything and everyone and grumps, grouches and growls all over the place. Not one of those redeeming ones either, just an ass.
And then to top it off, he HATES humans and even though he feels the mating pull to the h... he's decided he won't touch her and risk activating the mating cause she's a human and he hates humans, did he mention he hates humans and is willing to pass up a chance of a mate if she happens to be a hated human? He only mates cause she trips and he touches her to catch her... and he's all 'mine now mate, even tho I hate humans and you're human.' Barf.
Really, who wants to read about a conditional mate. 'I'll be happy if X is perfect, but if not, I'll walk away... oops, now either everything has aligned perfectly or we're stuck I guess I'll keep you.' Double barf.
I have NO idea why I read this book the first time, and even less so the second time. Perhaps, I'd forgotten how not good it was.
YES, the man is in fact, a shifter. It seems though that shifter men can't speak all that well, since the whole of the book he "barked, snapped, growled, rumbled" and basically yelled every time he talked to her. He would snap at her, then be all sweet and tender and then oh boy, we're snapping again. Not a fan of that. The dialogue was just meh, didn't really flow organically, and seriously, the way he speaks? YIKES.
The h is ..... not good. From the choices she makes, which were bad, to you know, making those same bad choices again but it's ok, because the new guy ONLY screams at her, he doesn't physically abuse her. Right. The story had this thrown together feel, it desperately needed a developmental editor. I honestly don't remember the panther series being this bad, or was it? All I know is I no longer make time for shitty writing, there are way too many great books out there to discover so I will not be picking up another book from this author again.
Good grief. What is with me and my reads right now?
This story was...okay, but nothing to get too excited about. It looks like the series improved after this one, but this is a kind of all over the place mess that needed someone with a firm hand to rope in the random bits that did not add to the actual story and press for focus on what does matter.
Things I liked:
+ I liked that the bear clan has no vertical hierarchy structure. It was a blessing to read a shifter story without the term alpha in it. "We all do what we want and no one orders anyone else around," was surprisingly refreshing.
+ Understanding the difference between dominance and being an asshole or abusive.
+ The Change was a nightmare horror show. As something of that nature really should be, considering the body is changing completely on a cellular level. Not sure how giving something intravenously negates rejecting something, however. Or what caused the rejection in the first place.
Things I did not:
- There was something very choppy and awkward about the prose that was distracting. It felt more like a rough draft to me than a polished story.
- The mains are both flat and poorly developed. The MMC in particular had some Things to work through that weren't addressed at all. A few days pass and now he's totally fine with humans after almost a decade of hating every last one of them.
-Flat bogeyman of Abusive Ex who was really unnecessary in this story. He may as well have been a black caped cartoon villain who twirls his mustache.
- Why the rando bit about the father and nothing came of it? Why even plant that seed if it's not going to grow and bear haha some fruit.
- GIRL. That is NOT how pregnancy works. Morning sickness—if it comes at all—takes a couple of weeks to start from the increases in growth hormone. Got pregnant the night before and is sick the next morning. Get out of here. You. Should. Know. Better.
Some more polishing and serious edits and this could have been a stronger read.
TW/CW: descriptions of domestic violence, stalking, animal attack, blood/gore
She’s running from her violent Ex. She ends up in upstate Mississippi. Tessa works two jobs in order to live. Barely having time to do laundry and eat.
Making a delivery she meets the Morgan brothers who are very grumpy and don’t like humans. Turns out they’re bears whose parents were killed by humans. When Tessa trips Drake steadies her and with that touch he discovers Tessa is his destined mate.
Very Bear, Mate, Sex like most Bear shifter books.
okay this wasn’t bad. I’m not into the whole shifter story thing and they were bears.
However.
A forbidden pet, getting to boop a wet nose of a wild animal, and getting a ride like a camel at a zoo from said bear are things im wildly interested in.
Will I ever read another book like this? Probably. Do I want to be a bear farmer? Not really.
Also why did he have to wear spurs? And why did this Pooh Bear mother fucked have to be attracted to her HONEY scent?!
DNFd. I have exactly one trigger warning: animal abuse. This book doesn’t give any content warning that the FMCs cat is killed and *smeared* across the hood of her car. This is why content warnings are necessary; so readers don’t walk into something that’s beyond their limit. Content warnings allow readers the opportunity to consent to reading triggering content.
I do love Drake and Tessa's story. Drake gates humans. Tessa is human but also his mate. Can he get over his hatred for humans to claim his mate? Tessa is running from her ex husband. Can the shifter protect her and keep her safe? Grab a copy and see what happens.
This is my second read by this author. I actually liked this one way better. Drake a bear shifter, leaves out on a farm with his 2 other brothers. He finally goes to town, after hibernation to get some supplies. This is when he meets Tessa. Tessa is running from her past, which includes an abusive ex-husband. Tessa is tasked to deliver a supply to the Morgan farm and when she almost inadvertently falls, Drake reaches out to break her fall and bam! She is his mate! Lol. Drake has a real dislike for humans and does not want Tessa to be his mate. But the heart knows what it wants and needs and how bear needs and wants to mate with Tessa, Lol. After a brief period of distance, Drake realizes that his mate is in danger and never leaves her side again. Kudos to the epilogue, I loved it!! 3.5 stars
Fated mates is one of my favorite tropes but one of its challenges is as the reader I want to feel like they fall in love not just because they are mates. I didn’t get that from this book.
Good story though short. Girl meets boy. Boy is actually grizzly bear shifter. They fall in love and she gets turned into a shifter after three painful transformation days. You know, the usual!
This one is different because Mother Nature is in human form. But hey, it could happen!
If you have read Theresa's series Rise of the Pride you have already met Drake Morgan. This is another awesome read from her. I have been dying to read Drake's book from the minute I first meet him in the Rise of the Pride Series.
Tessa is thankful that she was able to find two places to work at in her new town after having to escape her crazy ex-husband, even it if means she only gets one day a week off to do things for herself.
Drake is growing impatient finding his mate but he knows that it will be impossible to find the one if he is always on his land and not pursing his bear's mate. But Drake hates humans, and the only place where they do not come is his land that he shares with his two brothers.
Tessa knows about shifters, but she's never met one before Drake and his brothers. And she's definitely never met a bear shifter. Just when Tessa and Drake are getting used to the idea of being mates, trouble comes into town when Tessa's ex is hunting for her.
Now I want a bear shifter as a mate. Where can I find my own? I can't wait for more of the Morgan Clan. I highly recommend this book.
This first book in the Morgan Clan Bears was so good. I enjoyed the new characters (Drake and his two brothers) and also seeing some old familiar faces (Harold and the panther guardians). It had some BDSM elements but just enough to make it spicy and sexy. I especially like when the reader gets to see more than a snapshot in time. The ending was fabulous and I can't wait to read the next book in the series!
First in series. Sexy bear shifter who does not trust humans meets his mate who is human. Love that Rise of the Pride members show up in this series. This book is well written, funny, sexy moments with a few surprises thrown in.
I honestly think that the only reason this has ratings above a single star is because of the shape shifting thing and maybe because of sex scenes, if there’s any in here, which I wouldn’t know because I didn’t finish this shit. Other than those two reasons, I don’t see how someone would love it.
I received this eARC novel from Red Coat Publishing. This is my honest review.
Tessa is thankful that she was able to find two places to work at in her new town after having to escape her crazy ex-husband, even it if means she only gets one day a week off to do things for herself. Some days make it seem rough and hard, but nothing will compare to her life before when she was scared and bossed around.
Drake is growing impatient finding his mate for his shifter, but he knows that it will be impossible to find the one if he is always on his land and not pursing his bear's mate. But Drake hates humans, and the only place where they do not come is his land that he shares with his 2 brothers.
After hibernation, Drake and his brothers need to get ready to plant their crops to make their money for the new season, so he heads into town to get parts for their tractor. Who knew that the person who will be delievering their parts would be none other than Tessa, a human, who is also Drake's mate.
Tessa knows about shifters, but she's never met one before Drake and his brothers. And she's definitely never met a bear shifter. To say she's intrigued is an understatement, but she has no idea what being a mate is...
Just when Tessa and Drake are getting used to the idea of being mates, trouble comes into town when Tessa's ex is hunting for her. But if you've ever encountered a grizzly bear, you will understand that things are about to get...grizzly...when Drake's mate is threatened...
Wow! This is my second book by Theresa Hissong and I loved it! The first wasn't for me, but give me a good shifter book and I'm in it! I loved how tough but shy Tessa was and I loved how rough and moody Drake was.
I especially loved the 360 of Drake's attitude when he accepted that Tessa was his mate and how attentive he was to her. Now I want a bear shifter as a mate, cause the lifee they want to give their mates sounds amazing!!!
It really sucks how bad Tessa's first marriage was and how it got worse as time went on. I'm glad she was able to get out of that situation, even though he wasn't letting her go.
And it was great that Tessa was really able to help Drake get past his hatred toward humans because hating a whole species is not healthy.
I'm very glad I got a chance to read this book, and I will probably be seeking more novels from this series soon to see how the 2 brothers find their mates - especially since they are the ones actively seeking their mate!
It’s the mating season. Drake Morgan and his brothers Gunner and Rex have been out of hibernation for three weeks. Spring is approaching with the worst of the harsh winter behind them. It’s also time to till their land for crops.🌽
The Morgan brothers are shapeshifters 🐻 and their bears are calling them to start preparing for the mating season. The brothers have no mates and tend to keep to themselves. They don’t find humans too appealing so they try to stay far away from the city as possible. Drake’s considered travelling to a different clan in hopes of finding female bears but is not too keen about settling elsewhere besides his land.
They spend most of the year growing and harvesting their crops, then saving the money from their corn 🌾 for retirement and catering to their mates. Their kind is protective by nature and very caring. They cherish their females, and during hibernation, they make their homes comfortable and safe for their mates. And if their mates fell pregnant, they would go out of their way to ensure their needs are well provided for.
His clan has an alliance with Talon Shaw clan 🐆 after they saved Drake’s bear clan from humans some years back. Though the town sheriff is a Watcher, a guardian angel who watches over the panthers—and by extension, Drake’s clan, Drake prefers to keep the sheriff at arm's length, choosing to look after his own.
While running errands in town to get his machine parts for his plow, he runs into a woman 👩🏼 named Tessa. Tessa works for the owner of the hardware store🏬, Tulley where she met Drake. She’s been asked to deliver the remaining tools to the Morgan farm 🧰 🛠 which Drake requested but wasn’t available at the time.
While delivering the remaining parts to Drake’s house, she trips and falls at his feet while trying to set the toolbox 📦 down and Drake tried to break her fall. Immediately he touches her Drake's bear claims her. Drake realizes he must mark her so no other male would come around her. Meanwhile his brother, Rex is seething with jealousy.
But Drake’s emotions are all over the place because he doesn’t trust humans. His mind and his bear are at odds because she’s one of them. Tessa, on the other hand, isn’t looking for a relationship at the moment—she’s running from her abusive ex-husband and is looking forward to starting a new slate.
The Morgan brothers offer to help track her ex down and he enlists the help of the Guardians of the Shaw Pride.
Overall an interesting read. Would recommend to lovers of paranormal romance.

Mating Season's story line is brilliantly thought of and perfectly written and it led to me reading it straight through. Theresa Hissong is a wonderful author I have read many of her books and they are fabulous. If you like shifter book i would highly recommend Theresa's work you most definitely won't be disappointed.
If you have read Theresa Hissong’s series Talon Pack you have met Drake Morgan. He is a grouchy bear shifter that sticks to his land, loves his brothers which are his Clan, and hates humans. Tessa Ward is new to the area, on the run from her abusive ex husband and not in anyway looking for a man, which is good since what she finds is a shifter. LOL I do love a broody, bearded man and that is exactly what Drake is. Yes his bear is after him to find a mate, however he does not agree that it has to be this little human. Humans are bad and nothing you can say will change his mind. Lol, the bigger and broodier they are the harder they fall. Drake’s bear knows what he wants and he wants the lovely Tessa. Tessa has been through some crap man, you would think that a man like Drake would scare her but instead there is something that calls her to him. Even though Tessa has had it rough doesn’t mean she is a push over though, she stand up for herself when she needs too. Drake are her really are meant to be,that Drake is a dominant in the bedroom and found Tessa to be submissive is HOT! I love how everyone sees how Tessa has a calming affect on the grouchy bear that he doesn’t. However, when Tessa is threatened he is no where near calm!!! She is also calmed by him. Soul Mates!!!! The way the bears are with their women is awesome and I can’t wait to see Drakes brothers find their mates.
DNF. The H is an angry, irritable asshat (and not in what can be a good way in romance novels) who is constantly pissed off, growling, bossing the h around, and talking about how much he hates humans. Everything happens crazy fast, even for a love-at-first-sight type book. *I can’t believe he can’t get over his hatred of humans even for meeeeee.* Slow down, sweet cheeks. Y’all literally just had your second conversation ever, the first one just consisted of him yelling at you and telling you to get off his property. It takes normal people, probably even mythical bear shifters, longer than 5 seconds to get over their hurt and anger that a person or group of people have caused them.
Also, reading is stilted and awkward. The H frequently refers to anything that might have anything to do with humans as “human” this, that or the other. Is there a “shifter” or “bear” internet? If not, then maybe don’t call it “human internet.” It’s unnecessary and, frankly, sounds stupid. If there is, then mention that there’s a shifter internet and briefly explain how it’s different. Also, the author apparently isn’t aware that contractions exist. The dialogue was constantly filled with sentences like “What is going on?” and “You are coming with me.” When people are having casual conversations, they usually use contractions so it reads super awkwardly when it isn’t written that way. All in all, not my favorite.
So this book is about a bear shifter called Drake who is big, strong, protective, possessive and above all loyal. Then we have Tessa who has been through hell with her ex husband and is trying to live a normal as can be life as possible, that is until she meets Drake.
I had really high hopes for this book when I started to read it. I'm a sucker for any paranormal/shifter story. But sadly overall I thought this book was ok and not amazing in comparison to other similar books I have read. The story was very far fetched and although there was humor here and there which i loved the story lacked action which is a shame because this story had so much potential. Sometimes it felt like the characters were doing the same thing everyday. I believe Bradley (Tessas ex) should of played a bigger part.
Sometimes it felt like the author was trying to implement too much "50 shades of grey". Drakes character is very dominant while Tessas character is very submissive. Also at times it honestly felt like I was reading about vampires trapped in bear shifter bodies because the story told us that bear shifter salivia can heal wounds and to become a bear shifter you have to drink the shifters blood.
I rated 3 stars because although this review may come across negative I still thought the book was ok and I did enjoy the humor in the story.
*CONTAINS SPOILERS* WOW! A GREAT first book to a new paranormal series!! I LOVED IT!!
I fell in love with Rise of the Pride Series and was SO excited to know that Theresa was coming out with another paranormal series and once again, she did not disappoint my excitement! Drake Morgan is a hard working man but he's grumpy, unsociable, dislikes humans and keeps to himself and his 2 brothers maintaining his land and crops. The last thing Drake ever expected or wanted was to find out his mate is a human but Tessa is exactly what he needs and becomes his entire life. Tessa is hardworking, independent, sweet, sociable, feisty and only keeps to herself because she's running from her ex but once Drake touches her, he knows she's his life mate and nothing or no one will keep him from what's his, not even himself and definitely not Tessa's ex. I LOVED everything about this storyline. I also loved that some of the members of the Shaw Pride made an appearance. I highly recommend this book and I can't wait for the next one in this series!!
I have been impatiently waiting for this book. It didn’t disappoint. This is a spin off series of the Rise of Pride Series. Drake Morgan and his brothers get their home and land ready for a mating season every spring. He doesn’t think this season will be any different from the previous seasons until one little female comes onto their land to deliver a part. Tessa is working two jobs and trying to stay under the radar. She has come to their little town to try and hide from her abusive ex. This book was fantastic. I love Theresa’s books so much. I was so happy to get to read about the bears I have gotten peaks at in some of Theresa’s other books. Drake is amazing. He is a grumpy ass with just about everyone but once he realizes Tessa is his mate. He is different with her. He just wants to pamper her and take care of her. Tessa is amazing too. She has survived so much at the hands of her ex. She didn’t lay down and take it though. She filed for divorce and left. I can’t say enough about this book. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series. Fantastic book Theresa.
A good shifter romance, but not anything really unique or exceptional. So, 3 solid stars.
A spin-off of Hissong's Rise of the Pride series, so you see some cameos from the panthers. I believe Drake was introduced in that series, too, though I haven't gotten that far in those stories myself.
Rather liked seeing Drake come around to the idea of humans. Rather a grumbly bear otherwise. Interested to see how his brothers come across their mates.
Alternating 3rd person POV. No cheating, no OW/OM drama or love triangle nonsense. Tessa's abusive ex acts as antgonist (and helps push our leads together at the same time). No cliffhangers and an HEA for the leads. Nothing really on the downside here, but nothing really out of the ordinary either. A good bit of escapism.
Would I read more of the series? Yes, especially if other free Kindle finds.
Also really liked how the author's friend who was the inspiration for Drake also acted as Drake as the cover model. Little tidbit that made me smile.
For me, in this genre, this book is lower end of average. There were brief descriptive passages that elevated the narrative, such as when Tessa touched Drake's bear for the first time. But mostly, the story was clusters of clichés and repetitions.
I think I was disengaged because of the emphasis on dominant/submissive behavior as Tessa and Drake became a couple... more than in some of the other books I have read of this kind. This was not indicated in the blurb and I do not find that behavior appealing.
In addition, IMO important parts of the story were skimmed over or entirely missed.
The "change" was a pivotal time in the storyline but minimal description of the process (other than pain) made that seem less important. Disappointingly Zero on the wedding. A couple of mentions of a "small" one but we didnt get to read about it. Also nothing at all about Tessa's family intro to the bears.
I occasionally enjoy reading paranormal/shifter stories as a fun change of pace in my otherwise intense/ heavy reading diet. Sadly, this was not for me.
So here is another series by Theresa Hissong and I was not sure how this would go. So we have Drake Morgan and his brothers who are getting waking up from hibernation and getting things ready for the upcoming season. Now it is also the time where they will try and find his mate. Now Drake is a grizzly bear shifter and he has some issues. We learn a lot about him and his family. Drake is not a people person and does not like people on his land or space. He definitely despises humans. Which you will find out why. However, fate is funny and decides that he needs a mate and she happens to be human. It is funny how he reacts to her. Now lets meet Tess, she is sweet and caring. She is also hiding a secret and she is still running from that. She is also sassy and inquisitive. Now these two have this pull to each other and they fight it at first. That is until circumstances pushes them to be together. Now what will Drake do to keep her safe? Well lets just say that he definitely found the one to keep him on his toes. We do get a happily ever after and I loved it.
I wanted to like this and there was a story in there somewhere but the execution was severely lacking to me. Instalust acting like love, their conversations were weird and not how regular people carry conversations (especially strangers). Why is he smirking all the time if he's supposed to be grumpy? And we know he's grumpy because we are told multiple times. Needle in a haystack- this doesn't mean what the author seems to think it means. FMC- apparently part of her personality is inquisitiveness because she's asking a totally normal amount of normal questions that anyone would ask in her situation. This was actually what made me put the book down in the end. Author just seemed to go on and on about "oh its so many questions, I should stop asking questions, she's so inquisitive" it's like no... why is this a thing? She knows nothing about shifters, MMC isn't telling her anything about shifters, so ya she's gonna have to ask. And the setup for what I assume to be a Dom/Sub relationship was so cringy I knew I wouldn't be able to get through it.
