A pretty typical Carol Lynne book. Better than some of her others I've read, but it didn't stand out in any way.

Series Note: this series should be read in order.

Summary:
Nicco and Mac started messing around with each other when they were just teenagers, but Nicco's father would have never approved of the relationship. He wanted Nicco to be the perfect (heterosexual) soldier. So Nicco ran away from Mac and joined the military. Without Nicco in his life, Mac formed a relationship with Amir while he, too, was in the military. But after being seriously injured, Mac decides it's Nicco or nobody.

Nicco and Mac for a bodyguarding business together, but Nicco keeps things platonic between them. Eventually Nicco decides to buck his father's wishes and gives in to his love for Mac. But Amir is still waiting on the sidelines, still in love with Mac. Mac wishes he could have both men. Nicco isn't sure he can do it, but decides to get to know Amir. When Mac is seriously injured, the threesome comes to a head.

Review:
If you've ever read a Carol Lynne book, this one is pretty typical of what you find in her writing. Her stories are very idealistic, very simplistic, and very feminine even when involving all male lead characters. Stylistic and content wise, her stories aren't my favorite. They're not meaty enough, but being the fan of alternative romances that I am, I read them anyway.

I did like in this book how the 3 men don't jump right in to a menage relationship. There's a period of considering it, getting to know one another, some experimenting and growing as characters. I liked that. Much more realistic on the relationship front. The three characters had good chemistry together.

I also enjoyed the whole part of the story about Nicco and his Mom. Great side story and a great aspect of Nicco's character. It was very fitting to all that was happening.

What didn't I like? Hmm, well I did think there was too much overlap in the beginning with the last book. It was too much like rereading part of what I already read. But other than that, no major complaints. Mostly my mediocre rating just stems from the way Lynne writes her stories.

For those of you who like Carol Lynne, I think this is one you would like.

WARNING, this book contains: explicit sex and language, m/m & m/m/m oral sex, m/m & m/m/m anal sex, rimming, a m/m/m menage HEA, a semi-orgy involving other characters (amongst themselves, not intermingling), and blatant sexuality by just about everyone.

I should have follow my gut and stay away of this book, first thing, funny thing, I read this in order to read after "tortured souls" now I don't even want to read that one, there was too much focus on the other characters, there wasn't enough development in the relationship between the three men, i didn't feel the connection enough, it seemed like Amir was just being with Nicco to be with Mac, Nicco's father character could have been managed better, and Nicco's character had so much potential, and i don't know, he was being so girlish and insecure and fell so easily for Amir, for an ex-seal he sure lacked nerves, i just found him manly while confronting his father, furthermore we get to read that Mac & Amir are utterly gorgeous breathtakingly perfect & so well hung, while Nicco is just moderated good loking with and average tool that he doesn't use very much in the book, Mac came out sneaky and a bastard to me, giving hopes to amir when he didn't even know if it was going to work, and Amir was so damn perfect that became annoying, so it seemed Nicco was receiving an unfair treatment by the author that she tries to compensate with the lost mother plot.

Overall the story seemed all over the place & I didn't understand how Remy and Cory got together with the threesome of the first book, wasn't Remy so possessive?, so it's okay for men to touch his wife as long as they fuck him too?, and I hated that there was so many reference to their relationship that in order to understand them completely I need to read their books & that got me frustrated because i read this book never intending to read the ones with the hetero couple/mixed threesome, the Bram/Declan story took too much focus & even so it feel unreal, Bram was head over heels almost instantly after their first look at eachother, and they just fought with each other for Bram's brother to stay in the ranch, and boom out of nowhere they are making out in the stables, i would have liked to read more about how Amir & Nicco developed feelings for each-other, and a one on one between them with Nicco being the top, the threesome in the tub was so focused on Mac/Amir that Nicco was just like a portrait hanging on the wall, a little fight before overcoming the jealousy, and issues between them could have helped to make it more credible & again Amir seemed so perfect that got me bored & tired, I would have liked him to show weakness & let Nicco support him, but it didn't happen, i did try, but I couldn't connect with them, it was a disappointment.

Edit I just corrected my horrible grammatical mistakes, reviewing from a cellphone isn't easy!

Part of the series of Men in Love with kinky fast sex, changing couplings, gossipy men and their partners, lots of emotional people, with even more angst, drama and damsels in distress. This story follows according to type but is more engaging for the three hot guys and how they navigate the relationship they finally end up in.

Mac and Nicco were paramours till Nicco cut and ran due to daddy issues. Mac tried to hang on, but then he found Amir, who rescued him. Back on US soil and no longer a soldier, Mac opens his business and has Nicco also working with him. Amir joins in too, since he's in love with Mac. Amir and Nicco cannot stand each other because they love the same guy, though Mac reserves his affections for Nicco alone and asks Amir to wait. See, Mac wants them both and he wants Nicco to be the one to decide it. Nicco though is struggling accepting the relationship with Mac because of his dad, till he finally lets go and takes on Mac.

Tragedy hits them with a lot of backstory that is missed in this book and Nicco is starting to lean on Amir to help Mac recover. Things finally sync and Nicco, Amir and Mac get together. Once Nicco and Mac finish battling their demons and are whole again, they establish a company with Amir and all's well.

The GOOD in this story: was the amount of page time each character gets and their emotions are laid bare, except for Amir later on. The sex is hot, the angst is so good and the relationship building is so real and so lovely to watch.

IF ONLY: the story focused on Amir as well! Mac made him wait, we see angst then and then he's on the sidelines coming in when Nicco asks. There is a lot of relationship building that is left off the page as the other characters eat into it and a lot of plot is carried over from the previous books. There is no lead up given to fill in the blanks if you come in to the series midway. Amir gets the short end of the stick waiting in the sidelines and there was so much potential in him and to explore him. Mac starts strong, but ends up being angry and his asshole move to make Amir wait was a bit too much to bear. We do not see much of Nicco's monologue working through Amir and viewing him through Mac's eyes and trying to piece the man together. That would have been so good to read. The book seemed a bit rushed, but it still gives you a nice warm feeling when they all finally get their happily ever after.

Read this if:

It was a hot, smutty, 3some read.
The plot was a bit OTT with all-powerful, ex-military bodyguards who spent more time having sex than doing anything else... ;)

Once one of them gets rather stupidly shot - they move to a ranch/rehab centre with kids and horses and make even more 3way love (along with their friendly 5some!!) - in private, of course! :D

I haven't read previous books in the Men in Love series (https://www.goodreads.com/series/4596...) - as I'm not very interested in MF romances - but I think Going Against Orders worked just fine as a standalone.

I did, however, read Brier's Bargain and Seb's Surrender from Bodyguards in Love , a spin off series of the Men... and I've now read Going Against Orders to get to know a little bit more of a background of the MCs depicted in Bodyguards... ;)

So off I go to read Tortured Souls and Reunion to know even more about our sexy bodyguards! :)

This one came close to being good but no cigar. Nicco was great he's always been one of my favorites. When he and Mac finally got together I was beyond happy. But the menage aspect of the relationship didn't work for me. Reguardless of what Mac said to Nicco it was still presented as if this was a condition to be with him. It was almost like a guilt trip. Like it was Nicco's fault he found solace in Amir. Therefore Nicco needed to get with the program. And I'm not going to get started on poor Amir and what Mac put him through. It was all just bull. If this happened in real life both guys would have told him to shove it. Besides after the first time Mac and Nicco just didn't have the chemistry in my oppinion. I would have prefered him with Amir only. Mac was just a wolf in sheeps clothing. But it was still a pretty good book. Good plot and as usual it was good to see some of the old players.

I finished Going Against Orders (Men In Love, #5) by Carol Lynne and really enjoyed it. While it felt a little like two stories put together, I really liked getting these guys' whole story and not feeling like I needed to read another book to see how they fared. I've read the whole Bodyguards in Love series which is a sequel series to this series. I am definitely interested in reading more of the Men in Love series (specifically the m/m or m/m/m) stories because there are characters I want to know more of their stories (specifically Bram and Declan and to get Briar's--from Bodyguards in Love--background).

I may skip the m/f and m/f/m stories. It will likely depend on how much I think I'm missing in the books I read by skipping the girly-bits.

A definite 4-4.5 star read for me.

Again, this was ok, but predictable. Lotta sex, not a whole lot of subtlety. The thing about these books is that all the ones in this series are intertwined. Several of them happen at the same time and reference each other as characters from this book become involved in the plots of other books, leaving me wondering what happened in the other books. But since the others are m/m/f, I'm probably not going to read them.

This book was a little better than the first menage book in this series. I think because it wasn't insta-love and Mac and Nicco have been in love since High school. I wanted to read this book because in the first Bodyguards in Love book, I was introduced to Mac, Nicco, and Amir, and I was curious as to how they came together. Now I know.

Love denied to earn the approval of a parent, Nicco finds that living a lie isn't worth that approval. There are some wonderful emotional scenes. Very good characters, well put together. I hope we see these three again in future books to the series.

I just really hated the lack of character relationship. Part of this is my fault by not reading all of the previous books in the serious. But in her other books even the instal love had a point. I felt this book didn't have the stereotypical (or a really pointless) problem, climax, solution.

Good story. I just wish the colonel would have dropped dead.

Keep in mind, if you have never read Carol Lynne, these are NOT stand alone stories.

I agree with reviews saying Mac was sneaky and a bastard. His behavior was deplorable. A DNF for me.

Great story. Love Mac, Amir and Nicco. Boy I wish I had read this series before Bodyguard series. I would suggest you do that.. The last few books set up the Bodyguard series.
