It had been thirty years since the Convergence, when the dimensions aligned and combined Earth and the world of Gwyllon, known in human mythology as “Underhill”. Elven castles and ancient ruins sprouted in vacant lots, on major highways, sometimes merging with existing buildings, twisting into completely new structures. Roads and rail systems reformed, and after the rioting, starvation and death, agriculture finally sorted itself and food began to flow. A new government formed of elves and men had arisen, a society of human tech and elven magic. Cell phones and frost giants, race cars and elven steeds, dungeons and dragons… And everywhere, monsters.
Black Hound
Metal mage Rue Smith is no one’s tool. When dark elves try to invade her junkyard and trick her out of precious black metal, she fights dirty. With killer robots and a floating Watchtower made from classic cars, she dominates the monster plagued Yard and terminates the bad guys. Despite deafening construction on the dwarf fortress next door and unwanted attraction to her evil security chief, she kicks monster butt and holds her own with the city’s elite, until a near fatal accident almost ruins it all. One of the most powerful metal mages on the planet, she’s used to going it alone, but she’s going to need friends to tame the Yard’s wild magic before time runs out.
Heat sweet. Contains no graphic love scenes. Expect reasonable amounts of gore as monster heads explode and plenty of action.
I'm a stay at home mom with three kids, a dog and an active imagination. I spent the first 34 years of my life in Alaska, land of the midnight sun, but these days I'm located in Washington, and am enjoying a much warmer sun :) I'm married to my high school sweetheart, John, who is known to bring me flowers "just because".
My leisure time is filled with gardening, crochet, knitting, sewing, art and reading.
Meh, not as good, disappointing actually (see spoilers/rants). Look, the author does an amazing job of practical world building and logistics- she also is graphic about the violence, so why avoid some romantic scenes? It would help the reader connect with the characters because right now I felt like the 2 MC's had history but no chemistry, no build up to a marriage. And to just announce, by the way we are husband and wife??? I was mystified.
I had way too many issues with this story but I am trying to get to the Ice giant housekeeper one that is next :/ Hopefully it is way better!
Highlights & Spoilers (unfortunately I had to force myself to highlight some passages): He took her wrist, showed her the black mark he’d branded there. “I can find you anywhere in the world now. You’re mine.” “I’m not your slave,” she snarled. “I don’t need a slave,” he said smugly. “You’re much more valuable free.”
There was some humor in the story that I appreciated: When questioned about who he was, he told the nurse he was Rue’s boyfriend, which meant he got to stay in the room with her. At first Rue had been too dazed to register what he’d said, but when she realized she tried to kick him out. Unfortunately, no one takes you seriously when you’re wearing an oxygen mask. --------------- “Now what?” she heard A’le say, when she’d been apprised of the situation. Pray, Rue thought silently. She proceeded to pray vigorously, first that the floor would stop tilting and that her brain wouldn’t leak out her ears. She’d moved to the couch to continue her devotions.
And the romance feels like it came out of nowhere: She frowned, barely able to contain herself. “But what do you want? A fling?” Because she wasn’t going there. “That would be disappointing.” This was like pulling teeth. “So you want something long term? Are we talking marriage, what?” “You would consider marriage?” he asked, sitting straighter. He looked downright pleased now. “That makes you happy?” she guessed. “Ecstatic.” His eyes gleamed. “So you have feelings for me?” Why was this so hard? “So many feelings,” he said in a seductive growl.
And it felt really weird/preachy(?) about doing a sugar cleanse as well as the Dark Elf exiles being Christians?? Why not make up an elvish pacifist religion rather than make them Christian? It was so awkward... and did they have a church? Beliefs? Sooo many questions...
A clean cozy fantasy with plenty of action. Rue is one of the strongest metal mages on the planet. She fights against those that wish to take advantage of her and threaten her family with death robots and no mercy. But even a kick-ass mage can need help, particularly when an accident leaves her in bad health. But a resident cook with recommendation of healthy food and her security chief may just be all she needs to get control of her magic junkyard before the deadline.
It isn't weak to need help sometimes. Everyone does.
I adore the character development in this, series😍 the characters, are relate able, flawed and fabulous. They leave you knowing that we all.have struggles, yet we can choose how,we respond.. It is,a powerful outlook to know you choose how to respond and change.. Im.using them in an ESL class and they are a favorite. I read them for my own pleasure before choosing to share them with new speakers of English. These stories hold everyone's interest.
Pros: I loved the fictional world the author created, with all the various magical creatures and monsters. The characters were interesting, and there was plenty of action.
Cons: The ending felt abrupt. The Epilogue that was tacked on felt more like a rough outline than a fully developed chapter. This book also could have used some better proofreading.
Love this series, the characters and the world building were finely drawn, some editing errors appeared but it also felt rushed, more yearning from afar would have worked, the romance needed some depth as did the Matt/Mae romance. The climax could have been drawn out a bit. Will follow this creative writer as she develops her craft.
Honestly, the sexy stuff happens off the page, but so does all of the romance and feelings in general. What should be major plot points tend to be dealt with quickly and with zero drama or build up. It leaves the whole thing feeling anti climatic, which is a shame because the world building is good.
This follows the same pattern as the previous books, powerful mage anchoring land who collects an assortment of people sound her including powerful partner. I found the time skips detracted from deeply engaging.
Enjoyable read for the most part. The errors are somewhat jarring and disrupted the flow of the fun story. Worth reading overall and hopefully the various typos and malapropisms will be corrected as content errors are reported.
The worldbuilding is fascinating, albeit dark. Rue and Abyss are an interesting couple, and the plot had several surprises. I was glad the dark elf stigma was wasn't pervasive in Hound. The sugar thread was a little annoying. There is graphic violence.
This went right along with the other convergence groups and style of writing that this author is great for. Loved her world building and character building.
This was a great read and I would highly recommend this slow burn, interesting world read. The ending seemed a bit sudden but overall it was a very good read.
