Publisher’s Note: This is book two in the Bride of Fire series. This fantasy romance contains elements of danger, suspense, mystery, adventure, and sensual scenes set in an apocalyptic world.
When the gods breathed life into us, they blessed us with an element. Pity they didn’t care to bless us with anything else.
Princess Nymira’s life changed forever when a coup forced her to flee north. In doing so, she found herself mated to Zorren, the formidable Ice Lord. Their instant connection was undeniable but their budding relationship is not without challenges.
Mira must now face the open hostility of a foreign court as she attempts to carve out a niche by Zorren’s side. New enemies work tirelessly to drive a wedge between the newly mated pair and their tentative bond of trust is tested to the limit. Are Mira and Zorren strong enough to withstand the storm, or will her most guarded secret drive them apart… …forever?
When I realised that the world was not hiring for a ‘sarcastic but benign Supreme Ruler of the Universe’ I’ve decided to focus on my passion. By day I work in a UK company’s finance department and by night I become my alter ego Scribble Girl. I have been writing never ending stories since the age of 11 and this all stemmed from my love of reading.
I love reading. Period.
I’m part of the Harry Potter generation and while waiting between books would literally devour any book I could get my hands on. Let’s put it this way J K Rowling has a lot to answer for. I adore that there is no end in sight to where your own imagination can take you. That between the pages of a book you are able to craft enchanted forests and castles, perilous quests, heroes and heroines from thin air. I will admit that I am a sucker for happy endings and will chalk that one up to my Mill & Boon phase.
Playing with Fire by Jane Burrelli is book two in her Bride of Fire series. In this book, we are reunited with Mira and Zorren. Mira is struggling to find her place among Zorren’s people, but with her being a Firelander it’s not easy. With the bad blood between her people and his people, this makes things even harder between them. With Mira keeping secrets from Zorren, this only takes things from bad to worse. Zorren is battling himself and his own counsel as he works to take care of his people, but in the process begins to ignore Mira as well. Mira is not used to being in a place of where she holds no political clout. She quickly comes to see that the ground she stands on is precarious at best. Due to misunderstandings, lies, and tactful manipulation it isn’t long before Mira and Zorren’s relationship is put to the test and frayed to the point that if they aren’t careful they will lose everything. Playing with Fire brings us a step deeper into Mira and Zorren’s story. Zorren knows that Mira is his mate, but he lets those who surround him influence him in ways that will cost him. Mira is still a strong female character, but we get to see more flaws in her character. She is strong-willed but she takes things too far at times in my opinion. I like that when certain situations arise that she doesn’t back down from them. Mira and Zorren have a lot to face in this story, and the question of what will happen not just with them but with the kingdom is constant. This book truly touches on the differences between them and the politics of court that they each face. Mira must face her rivals, threats and much more. Zorren must take a stand one way or another. This story truly shows the tests that they will face as they work to come together. There are some steamy situations in this story, but thanks to overheard conversations, miscommunications, and unchecked lies things take a rough turn between the two. I like that we get to see the danger that Mira faces. It leads one to think that if she is facing this danger then for sure Zorren is facing it as well, but unknowingly. I don’t like that Mira gives head to her stubbornness so much in this story. Zorren makes mistakes, but it seems like she is intent on making him pay at every turn. Nothing he does appeases her even a little, regardless of the fact that she sees how much he is hurting. I’ll admit that her behavior irritates me, but I have hope that things will work out. I am rating this book 5 out of 5 stars. The author keeps me engaged throughout the story. Some questions are answered from the first book, but the second book still ends with questions unanswered and the question of what happens next looming. If you have not read the first book in this series I highly recommend that you go back and read it first. When I first started reading this book I had not read the first one, so I went back and started with that one. It helps to lay the foundation for the characters so that you are better able to understand the dynamics and relationship. I’m hoping that all will come to light in the next book in the series and that things will be well in the end. This book is engaging and the characters are riveting. An intense fantasy romance novel that I recommend.
I totally, absolutely loved Hidden Embers, the first book in Jane Burrelli‘s Bride of Fire series. So I was both excited (as I was primed for more book-goodness) and scared (of book 2 ruining things) waiting for the next book. And now it’s here ... and Playing With Fire (said Book 2) is: superb (rejoicing and relief all around). This is a more than worthy successor. The powerfully wonderful story of Princess Nymira (Mira) and Ice Lord Zorren continues and totally dragged me in. Great plot, great writing and a great cast of characters. What more could I possibly ask for? But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises - the book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, it is easy to highly recommend.
I read this book in one sitting because I couldn't put it down. It picked up right where the last one ended and did a great job of reminding me what went on without retelling the story like so many sequels do. The raw emotion experienced by Mira was more than touching as the book took me along for the ride with her, celebrating her victories and feeling her pain. Zorren had his own emotional rollercoaster but I felt less empathy for him as he was in control of the situation. There was a major plot twist that I didn't see coming and I'm waiting with bated breath for the third book to find out what happens. If you enjoyed Hidden Embers, you will love this book and if you didn't read it, you should.
The second book in the series, it does not disappoint. It brings the reader right back into the story with the two main characters taking front stage once again. Things are not working out so well for the two of them as others do their best to find ways to cause trouble in their relationship. The author did an great job of creating chaos between them and misunderstandings through miscommunications. Nothing felt forced. It seemed so believable that others would try to cause trouble. She is strong willed. He makes mistakes. Some of the misunderstandings are due to their own inability to communicate. Well written, this is a great second book.
Oh my goodness I adore this tale - Bride Of Fire! This is book 2 - Playing With Fire. Mira is her own worse enemy, if only she were not so full of pride she and Zorren would be wed and happy by now but then we wouldn't have needed book 2, which is a wonderfully exciting read! I soo want to tell you all what happens but I don't want to spoil it for you! Just get yourself a copy of this exciting and sexy, fantasy adventure, you won't regret it I promise!
Playing with Fire is the second book in the Bride of Fire series, and it’s the continuation of Mira and Zorren’s relationship. Mira has accepted her fate at the Ice Lord’s mate and future consort, but unfortunately, the Ice Lord is living up to his reputation and instead of learning and listening to his mate, he’s pushing her away. After striving to prove her worth and being pushed away one too many times, she runs to finish her original task, but runs right into a storm that almost causes her death. Some secrets are revealed while others are kept close, but is it enough to salvage their relationship, especially when the odds are stacked against them?
This book was definitely filled with angst, broken trust, and a whole lot of pain, and it definitely took on a darker tone than the first book in the series. There were parts of this story that were almost difficult to read, knowing that both Mira and Zorren were fighting each other, causing each other pain with their words and actions, and it kind of broke my heart at times. Mira so badly just wanted the respect and love she knew Zorren could give her, but he was filled with prejudices and went against what his gut told him. I love that there’s still hope for them, though, and that warms my heart and makes me anxious to read the third book! Also, there’s a huge secret she’s keeping and I’m dying to know more about! I would definitely suggest reading the first book before this one, but this really was a great book and I really enjoyed it!
This is the second book in this series by this author and continuing story. I really enjoyed book one and I'm pleased to say, this book is just as good as the first. Once started I had to continue reading to the very end. This series has a great original story-line with well-developed characters that are believable as well as likable, especially the two main characters Mira who is a Princess fire elemental and Zorren who is an Ice Lord. It is one of those books that I could write so much about, but I don't want to spoil it for other readers. so I will just say how good it is and leave you to find out for yourselves. I truly hope this series becomes a long series as I look forward to reading a lot more from this author, who I added to my authors to read list. So if you enjoy Paranormal romance, Urban fantasy, and general Fantasy then you will enjoy this book. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This is the second book in this series. It continues Mira and Zorren's story. Filled action, adventure, suspense and romance, this series has no problem capturing and keeping your interest. As Mira tries to find her place among Zorren's people and Zorren overcompensates to make sure the past doesn't repeat itself, forces are working to drive them apart. The happiness these mates embraced is tested, and fear, anger and mistrust cause drama and danger. With twists and secrets added into the mix, I found this to be an enjoyable read and eagerly await book three. This is my voluntary, honest review.
This is the 2nd book to the series and it’s a continuation of Nymira ( Mira ) and Zorren’s story. This is a heart wrenching story Zorren pushes his mate away Mira which leaves her heartbroken so she runs away and nearly gets killed in the process. This is a fantastic read with a great storyline and characters, there’s so much going on in this book to keep you entertained and turning the pages. A 5 plus ⭐️ read and it’s well deserved and I highly recommend this book it’s definitely well worth the read.
Mira and Zorren are true mates but life in his court is anything but happy and serene. Zorren is being plagued by his council to find a suitable consort, not a nobody commoner (and a Firelander, too) like Mira. Good grief, Mira's big secret is sure to cause an uproar! This series keeps getting better. I talked, in my review of the first book, about the author’s skill in world building and characterization, and she certainly came through in this one. The world building really is sublime. She showers us with delicious detail, with no noticeable info dumping at all. Everything from the place Mira lives, the people she meets, to the touching stories she stumbles across, are consistent and real. The heat of the forge, the icy chill of the city, the echoing silence of the practice grounds are all conveyed with realistic detail. I felt very much as if I was following Mira through the maze of new experiences and meeting the people she met – some good and some bad. Even her fire-bending (yes, I went there), so alien and fantastical was dealt with in such a realistic fashion – it didn’t come easy, she had to practice, she wasn’t the greatest fire-bender ever. The characterization was so good, I felt something about everyone, from the servant, to the poor family, the smith, the cook, everyone up to the Ice Lord himself. Therein lies my problem with both books. I’m sure it won’t be a problem for very many people, but I just can’t slide by without commenting on the way Zorren treats Mira. I struggled to find anything to like in Zorren, and the mysterious incident in his past doesn’t, in my opinion, justify the way he acts in the present. I appreciate this is a barbarian society and Zorren is true to his archetype. In fact, I’m sure it’s something that will endear him to some people, just not to me. With any other author, I might stop reading here because Zorren would be irredeemable, but if anyone can persuade me to forgive the unforgiveable it’s this author, so I will buckle in and hope for the best. Even if she can’t redeem Zorren, I know there will be rich detail, wonderful stories and Mira will have her happy ending. All in all, the first two books of this series were, quite simply breathtaking. I haven’t read fantasy in a long time, and this book has reminded me what I’ve missed. It was so easy to read, so enthralling and even that fact I hate Zorren so much is testament to the skill of the writer and the power of the story. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the books to anyone who likes a great story with a good pinch of realism and a touch of magic.
I enjoyed book two in this series. Now I am anxiously waiting for the next installment and conclusion to the story. Mira and Zorren struggle with their relationship. More of the world they live in is discovered as Mira goes about becoming acquainted with others. Kudos to Ms. Burrelli for a well written story.

Author is new to me. I like her writing and will look for more stories by this author. Seems awful depressing to me. Read fairly quickly. I liked the characters
