The perfect series to destroy your appetite.

I’e and his friend Kazu are taking the bus home from high school just like any other day. After they mysteriously pass out while aboard the bus, they wake up in a new bus full of dead bodies which are being transported into an underground facility utilizing butchered human meat for stomach-churning purposes. The place is run by dangerously powerful people serving an even more terrifying master.

Aligning themselves with other survivors, I’e and his new companions make it their mission to break out alive while being confronted with one nightmare after the other within the demonic facility. The truth of what’s truly going on underground is even more awful than they’re prepared to handle, however.

Starving Anonymous starts off as a pure gross-out gore manga, but progresses into an insane science fiction psychological thriller with some genuinely fascinating characters and surprisingly emotional moments. Even through its weaker plot elements, the series keeps up a constant momentum of explicit horror, brutal action and bizarro nightmare fuel.

The villains are chilling, but the heroes aren’t exactly right in the head either. The two leading men Natsune and Yamabiki who support I’e with his escape are extremely disturbed while still being empathetic and very interesting. Natsume is a monstrous combat expert with a childlike understanding of the world while Yamabiki is a deranged genius whose morbid fascination with science often overrides his morality. The relationship between these crazy guys is what really brings the mystery, thrills and tension of the story to their full potential.

There’s a few moments where the logic behind the facility and the reasoning behind the strange world-building is a bit iffy, but the ridiculousness of the plot and the strong character work is solid enough to make up for its shortcomings. There’s some harsh commentary about global warming, treatment toward livestock for meat consumption and the increase of health problems in the modern world due to the way our environment is treated and the garbage that’s put in our food every day.

The finale is also surprisingly emotional and satisfying, being ambiguous enough to leave some of the darker themes up to the imagination.

My rating: 4.1/5

3.5/5 down to 3/5 since I'm starting to get over the series' fascination with gore. Yuu continues to deepen the story and world in interesting ways but its hard to appreciate it when everything is written to get to another superfluous gore scene.
The story continues to deepen as This all are good signs as each plot point is interesting, furthers the plot, and expands the world. However the pacing also struggles since every plot point also has to conveyor belt onto another gore scene. It is to the point they start to lose their impact. I'm all for gore but if you over-gore your series it just becomes exhausting.
There are other horror elements which aren't gore which I feel works much better. We get introduced to the which allow Inaba to both show off his anatomy skills, create strong body horror, and create a new threat aside from the aliens. There designs are striking and allow for impressive art tricks such as . They are a great inclusion however they too struggle with Yuu's inclusion of sidetracking the narrative for another gory scene.
This volume does complicate the plot by which is a brave choice. On one hand it allows for a dual-perspective letting us see even more which is bound to be good. On the other hand, we're stuck with I'e and Ogura this volume. I'e is the least interesting of the trio, Ogura is annoying and stutters way too much (which makes it awkward and a pain to read), and we get a few randos. It does allow for the whole “the new people are taking advantage and taking control” but it goes nowhere.
The art continues to be strong but the CGI and JPGs are cropping up a bit more often like a clear 3d model of a brain or a copy and paste-d fly JPG. Inabe's a talented artist and no doubt the detail he aims for with the multitude of gory scenes in each chapter means less time for editing but a little bit more editing or carefulness might be appreciated.

Kierownictwo, starając się ponadto zminimalizować straty, wysyła specjalną jednostkę zmodyfikowanych ludzi, by znaleźli winnych.

Iye, Kazu i Natsune ponownie stają tu przed trudnymi decyzjami. Taka dynamika pozwala śledzić różne strategie przetrwania i rozwijać postacie w sposób angażujący czytelnika.

Najbardziej wyróżniają się charakterem Natsune i Yamabiki. Jeden dąży do zemsty, drugi do szalonej naukowej fascynacji. Ich działania wpływają na losy całej grupy, a moralne dylematy i napięcie dodatkowo potęgują mroczny klimat.

Akcja nie rozwija się tu nadmiernie szybko. Tom pełni funkcję przejściową i przygotowuje grunt pod kolejne wydarzenia. Podział bohaterów na grupy pozwala pokazać różne perspektywy ośrodka. Wątki korporacyjne, eksperymentalne i ucieczki bohaterów przeplatają się, tworząc ciekawą wielowarstwową narrację. Niektóre momenty fabuły wydają się jednak trochę zbyt absurdalne. Jednak mocne kreacje postaci i napięcie rekompensują te niedociągnięcia.

This is not what I expected and I love it

I thought this series was going to be about a dystopian world where there is no good and they need to be cannibals to survive (because it's titled "Starving Anonymous) .... but I was so wrong. MAN was I wrong. It is so so so much deeper and weirder and worse than that, and I honestly didn't think it could get worse than that. There are so many disturbing but also creative and intriguing things happening... It's incredible. It's terrifying. It's ... wrong to even exist, but I'm glad it does. Holy crap. How the hell are they going to get out of this? Will they turn out as experiments? Whoa...

Okay I am actually starting to really like this series. This is probably my favorite volume by far, because I feel like the way the story progressed with everyone splitting up and the encounters I'e and his group went through kept me on the edge of my seat. I think this volume had the best opening scene and I just really like how different the creatures in this manga are. I am fully engaged now.

🌸23rd July 2021🌸

This manga is seriously messed up but it’s such a good horror! I expect that it’s too grotesque for a lot of readers but if you can handle that it’s very good and I’m enthralled! Starving Anonymous is very gory and features various scenes and scenarios that will make even the most seasoned horror fan feel a little queezy. Just a warning that this manga contains graphic depictions of torture, murder, r*pe, dismemberment, human experimentation, and all kinds of atrocities. The survivors are trying to find out how to escape the mysterious and horrifying establishment they find themselves in and as they go about it, more is uncovered about how vile the place they are in actual is with the introduction of Kiriyu, a character who’s character design alone sends shivers down your spine. This manga is doing a brilliant job of unraveling the story at just the right pace to keep you intrigued but maintaining the suspense. The story itself is so bizarre that it’s near impossible to predict what’s going to happen next. I’m fascinated and horrified in this story and I cannot wait to read the next volume!

Even after finishing this series I'm.......still not entirely sure what I read.

Gross. So gross. And weird. But also kind of fun? It's definitely not going to be for everyone, but if you enjoy Junji Ito's work this might be for you.
