They say I'm an abomination.
I say words hurt ... but not as much as my fists.

My name is Tamara Bentley, Bent to my friends, and I'm not supposed to exist. I was born of the forbidden union between a witch and a werewolf, and they've been trying their damnedest to hide my existence ever since.

But now my secret is out, and my uncle, the leader of the wolf pack, is pissed beyond belief. In his eyes, I'm something that should've never been born. He wants me dead and doesn't care who he has to sacrifice to get the job done.

I'm far from helpless, though. Not only am I a champion athlete, but I'm strong enough to punch out a bus. Good thing, too, because a rare lunar event is about to increase my uncle's already terrifying power. I'll have to call on every last ounce of strength I have if I want to survive the night and save the lives of everyone counting on me.

Rick Gualtieri loves to write adventure, mayhem, and snarky dialogue. His bestselling Tome of Bill series combines all of this into a world of supernatural danger with hard-hitting action and plenty of sharp-tongued geeky humor.

Rick lives alone in a dark, evil place called New Jersey with only his wife, three kids, and countless pets to both keep him company and constantly plot against him. When he's not busy monkey-clicking out words, he can typically be found jealously guarding his collection of vintage Transformers from all who would seek to defile them.

I won a book by this author and I truly didn’t have any idea what I was going to pick, then I saw werewolf and thought ok I might like that. NO way I LOVED IT.

There isn’t a romance which is my thing but this book didn’t need it. I loved how Bent learns about herself and her family it was funny and witty.

The world building was straight and to the point it was perfect to suck you in. I want to know what’s going to happen! So I will be jumping on book 2 asap.

The narration is fantastic for this story and for Bent she is so entertaining.

Rick Gualtieri is one of my favorite indie fantasy writers with his Bill the Vampire and its many spinoffs. The books are dark, irreverant, hilarious, and full of pop culture mockery that would put the Big Bang Theory to shame. However, there was an absence from that universe that was deeply noted: there are no werewolves in the Billverse.

The Hybrid of High Moon series rectifies this by centering on the daughter of a werewolf and a witch. In the town of High Moon, a young woman named Tamara Bentley is a frequently ill young woman who has to take her medicine regularly. Well, one night she doesn’t and has to run away from a horde of lycantropes.

From there, Bent discovers she has powers far beyond those of mortal women. Unfortunately, they come from being a forbidden hybrid of witch and lycanthrope. This is a big no-no and will probably result in the entire town being destroyed unless she agrees to an arranged marriage with increasingly Darth Vader-esque conditions.

Tamara Bentley is a delightful character who manages to be more likable than Bill and also a strong hilarious personality in her own right. The stakes are also much smaller, being limited to Bentley’s hometown, which is enough to motivate her by itself. I feel too many superhero and urban fantasy books feel the need to turn the needle to eleven when its much more personal dealing with individual lives.

I like how the book sets up a rivalry between werewolves and witches as opposed to werewolves and vampires, which is common enough to be noteworthy. Bent’s parents are supposed to be in an arranged marriage with no love between them but fooled everyone by “sacrificing themselves” to it. That kind of silliness is what I love from Rick Gualtieri and we get a lot of funny moments like this.

Rick Gualtieri writes a plucky heroine that I absolutely adored and her best friend reminded me of Willow from Buffy. I also think Bent is far less aggravating (albeit less funny) a protagonist than Bill from the Tome of Bill series. If you liked his other books, you’ll love this and it’s a good starting place if you haven’t read any of them.

Guys tend...

...to write women usually as stereotypes—as in “tomboy” “sexy siren” and always attractive or extremely plain. One of the little factoids that got me here is how he seemingly described the characters’ physical characteristics without resorting to evaluating them externally. For instance, Bent’s best friend is only identified for the first several pages as such and through her snarky dialogue with the main character. Not until it becomes a part of the plot as an identity marker does Rick say anything about her heritage or looks.

I thoroughly enjoyed Bent’s personality and perspective, looking forward to the next book.

This is a witch and werewolf story that ends up seeming more superhero than anything else. The hybrid 19 year old has power from both sides of her heritage, and she's neigh unstoppable in a fight. Good thing she uses her power to protect her town. And there are hints of spirits or some other creatures that have a hand in her fate. I enjoyed this story, though the violence was a bit too graphic and excessive for my taste.

Get Bent! was a combination of quirky and interesting. Bent was an unusual, strong character and I loved this story line. The beauty in this book is the great job the writer did in developing the secondary characters which were pivotal to Bent's motivations. Well done.

Mortal enemies have a baby, AGAIN? (It works!)

Get Bent while having some trappings of typical Fantasy/Horror/Romance/Bormance, etc. Get Bent is a well plotted out beginning to the hopefully long running new series about a female hero who is not just a 2 dimensional representation of a Buffy wannabe.
Rick takes his time to build a world here and an intro story to explain just enough to keep us on the edge of our seats.
The other characters feel like they have more purpose than just to be there to support Tamara Bent, our heroine.

Excellent start

I think the witch/werewolf thing's been done before. Doesn't matter. Rick the author made a kick ass heroine and has set things up for another fun urban fantasy series. If it's even half as good as Tome of Bill (I expect better) this will be well worth the money. Get Get Bent!

Pretty good book. Unique

I chose the book because the author writes pretty damn good books. For a book with werewolves, this one was unique. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I cannot wait to read the next one.

Very good, from start to finish. I'm glad I was reminded this was on Audible, as that is how I consume most of my "reading" lately. The second book is out in a week and in 3 weeks I have a new Audible credit, I know what I'm picking up.

I liked it

I really liked this book. In fact, it is 'almost' my favorite book of the author's so far. The story was good, and kept me engaged the whole time. My only issue was the whole, 'let's do the polar opposite of what everybody in the know is telling me to do, so I can come close to dying again'. I know it was to push the story forward and establish Bent's character, but...

Either way, I still highly recommend checking it out. It was a good story that I had a hard time putting down.

A Kick-butt New Series!

A witty, action-packed adventure! Filled to the brim with werewolves, Celtic Witches - no, I'm not attempting to spell the proper name of afore-mentioned witches, kick-butt friends, and the heroine of the story...Abomination or just a victim of circumstance?
I highly recommend this story!

Well, this is another win for the author. It was young adult, but still awesome! I mean through all the despair and anguish, we saw what the determination and resolve of Tamara got her through the situation she was in. Oh and the humor reminded me of the one in Bill the Vampire totally awesome.

This book went by way too quickly. I was captivated from the start. I loved the characters. I loved Tamara's spunk. I loved Riva as a best friend (and her in the epilogue). A very good read and I am ready for the next book.

Half witch, half werewolf. What happens when a witch and a werewolf fall in love and start a family? They have to hide her abilities from herself and both sides.

Oh wow oh wow oh wow. That was … fucking awesome!
"Language!"
Oops, sorry Ms. Lissa (pronounced Steve). I mean, that was freaking awesome! I mean, I've encountered and enjoyed a lot of really cool urban and even suburban (is extra-urban a thing?) fantasy over the years, but this Gualtieri fellow… well, he does it right!

"Holy shit! My mother was a witch, my dad a werewolf, and we owned a fucking minivan. Tell me that’s not just a bit strange."

OK, that quote may count as a major spoiler but I don't think so. Hang on… nope, it's in all the on-line blurbs and descriptives. So we're good! Friends, what you need to realize is that this is not only just as much fun as any of the "Bill the Vampire" books and novellas I've read so far, but it is also a unique look at that whole world featuring one of my favorite critters, namely, the aforementioned werewolves (they were… aforementioned, I mean!). Obviously, there are a slew of decent vampire containing books out there - see me waving at folks like Chris Tullbane and Scott Burtness - oh and also the ghost of Sir Terry Pratchett, sorry! These fantastic authors all bring both the fangs and hilarity to the party, just as Mr. G does! I also acknowledge that there has - in my eyes - been a scattering of really, really good but definitely more serious vampire-based offers (among my favorites being Cronin's "The Passage" books, Wellington's "Laura Caxton" package and Lindqvist's "Let the Right One In"). And yes, despite his own insistence that the "Bill" books are NOT serious vampire lore (in a word = bullshit), these should also be included if we're going to expand on this topic…

“You’ve been scrying me, haven’t you? Scrying and cockblocking me?”
“Such a vulgar term,” she replied, giving me side-eye. “But in essence, yes.”

HOWEVER (geez, I do go on sometimes) MY WHOLE POINT IS SIMPLY that my list for decent werewolf-based stories is much much shorter (and less convincing, even to me!). As such, this first "Bent" chapter will sit well atop my consideration for any "best of" lists in this regard (nodding though again to them there Tullbane, Burtness and even Pratchett fellers) … and I just know we're not even a fraction into what's waiting on us! Yes, truth be told (curse my liberal leanings), this is because RG's writing is quite funny when it needs to be (or even muted when that's called for) and his popular culture references remain spot on (sound familiar?)! But I'd also include this book noting - unlike said Nosferatu-containing type tales - not everyone seems to get the lore of lycanthropes even marginally close to believable. That, however, is NOT the case here! Did any of that make sense? Probably not…

…it was like I had fallen into a rabbit hole, only to discover it was a bottomless mineshaft…

If I can try to get this runaway train back on the track though: what's a little weird is that if I had to define DG's writing style, his story creation and plot, um, plotting in a way that separates him from the pack (that's an official pun, kids, write it down!) is that he makes this wild tales of the absurd and supernatural so very human and even relatable along the way. And this is with me acknowledging that Tamara is just about as NOT Bill as she could be ... and I love her just as much as I do everyone's favorite semi-virginal nerdling from New York! Heck, her family, her friends (I'm totally smitten with Riva - in a good, platonic way I promise - even knowing any minute she's just going to go all Djinn on us and zap someone!), her kid brother (another oogie boogie in waiting!) … well, it's all such a treat to behold. And I love how we get involved and even intimately acquainted with just about every player so quickly and so completely, even if I know beyond knowing that, again, we've only scratched the surface (urgh, not as good a pun… but still write it down!) of some of different folks' contributions! And that's not even acknowledging the Gaelic speakers that eventually show up!

Say what you will about being attacked by a horde of monsters, but it made for damn good cardio. CrossFit had nothing on this shit.

Yes, if this matters to you, it does all still fit neatly into the "Bill" universe even though that really doesn't come into play here (yet?) nor does it need to. But this could all be happening oh-so-easily in this day and age of "what pandemic are we on now?" and the mess the world finds itself in. So readers, trust me when I say that this is just fantastic escapist fun while also being serious enough to please any fan of a host of genres, from hard-core fantasy to hilarious prose and banter to also some of the best action-adventure scenes I've seen in a while (even if I had to google the DDT reference)! All I know is that I can't wait to keep going and will talk to you probably in about 24 hours as next up is Book 1 1/2 which - with our current schizo weather - will probably already be devoured by din-dins time tomorrow night! Keep pushing fans!

Here's a fun urban fantasy series about a young woman who is the child of a werewolf and a witch. She doesn't know that at the beginning of the book, but the reader does. She's home for the summer after her first year of college and hanging with her best friend, Riva, whom the reader will also immediately suspect that there is something different about. Gaultieri does a good job of making Bent (Tamara Bentley) feel like an authentic teenaged girl. Her younger brother annoys her and her parents embarrass her even while her mother keeps a very tight hold of the apron strings. But, being a typical rebellious teenager, she and her friend decide to go camping in the forbidden woods where she realizes she has forgotten her medicine and has a seizure. While she is busy dying, a werewolf attacks them—big surprise for her as she doesn't know these things exist despite her parentage. Then she discovers something even more surprising. She can go toe to toe with a werewolf.

Things get even more exciting after that. Turns out she doesn't need her medicine to keep from dying, it weakens her so she doesn't know she has powers. And mom and dad aren't the apologetic “we'll explain everything” types. They are the "just do as I say types" even when it turns out that that means marrying a wart-covered werewolf so the pack doesn't try to kill her. (Or everyone else in the town or everyone else in town.) Unfortunately, for Bent's parents, she just isn't good at doing what she is told. And most of the book is a running battle with a pack of werewolves determined to kill everyone in the town of High Moon.

This is a fun, fast-moving story I did not want to put down. Bent is a great heroine. Her friend Riva is filled with mystery that Bent really should pay a little more attention to. Her parents are going to be pains in the posterior section forever, even as they are clearly well-intentioned. And, of course, the werewolves are only a small part of the overall problem. I'm looking forward to reading the next one.

Someone in a fb book group recommended this, and I jumped on it. I usually don’t write reviews, but every time I think about this book, it annoys me, so here we are.

First off, I will say that the writing is good. That’s probably the only reason I finished it.

Now, on to the not so good. This book is about a 19 year old girl, Bent. Bent’s parents have lied to her for her entire life. They are pretty horrible people (more on this later). Turns out Bent is a wolf/witch hybrid. She’s incredibly strong - so strong she can kill half of the werewolves in the pack with her bare hands. She also manages to kill the alpha (he needed to die). Bent is also a good person. Basically, she could be a total badass, but she’s not, because she’s a total doormat for her horrible parents.

So yeah, her parents. They have lied to her forever, have told her she has to take pills every 12 hours so she doesn’t die. Lies. They have her taking them so that no one knows she’s a hybrid. Basically, these two hooked up, got pregnant with Bent, and can’t face the consequences of their actions with their respective groups (the dad was supposed to be the future wolf alpha, the mom was the future witch queen, and the two groups hate each other). So, even though they were supposed to be the future leaders, they told no one about their daughter, pretended she was adopted, then tried to marry her off in an arranged marriage to some douchebag wolf. Bent eventually refuses to marry the guy, ends up killing him on accident, and this leads to the group of wolves attacking her town and killing innocents. Her parents disappear during this, don’t stay to help Bent battle, and only show up at the very end. Then, they try to make her take her stupid pills again! Ugh, sorry for the rant, but these two are supposed to be super powerful, and yet they can’t even own up to their own shit.

The best part of this book was Bent’s bff. She was the only decent person other than Bent.

I have to admit when I binge read a book I binge it hard, but this book I had to put down because some of the characters were meh in my perspective and the plot is just rather undeveloped to me

I also found how quick tam is to forgive her parents

1. Lied about a life threatening condition
2. Lied about her heritage
3. Turned her into a drug addict with “medication”
4. Sabotaged her at state finals

She initially showed anger and just got over it way too fast which felt unrealistic to me. I mean from my first point that can create a hell of a lot of trauma. On a kid growing up and my reasons are pretty obvious for the first 3 but I’ll explain 4 before anyone tries to say it was for her protection

1. They say they did not want to draw attention from
Unwanted sides
Answer: neither the witches or werewolves would suspect anything because the parents told their factions Tam is adopted.
Answer 2: it’s state that it’s only a political marriage both factions actually like at their respecting faction member as marters to the cause so no way would they suspect anything would be romantic

2. The sport is wrestling, strength is important, but so is skill and how one uses that skill she worked hard and trained hard.

3. Tam was already on her meds, that meant she always had the strength of a normal girl, she got to where she did on her own merits, her mother doubling her dose crippled her and robbed her of her opportunity to shine

Aside from these issues I liked how this was done in the way it started from the parents perspective you got to see a little of how they were before they had tam. I liked that this book had no love story too, I feel it would have been a more interesting story if Tam was close to her uncle before he found the truth of her origins because it would have made it more turmoil and harder for both sides to fight

Also hated the last battle because it made me hate tams father when I didn’t mind him so much before
