Elle Adams lives in the middle of England, where she spends most of her time reading an ever-growing mountain of books, planning her next adventure, or writing. Elle's books are humorous mysteries with a paranormal twist and tons of magical mayhem.
She also writes urban and contemporary fantasy novels as Emma L. Adams.
A quick read about a mystery set in a supernatural town.
More like an episode than a journey for Blair Wilkes, she's coming to terms with the supernatural world in a brisk way while struggling to keep up with a heavy workload and catch up with magical studying.
Much of the story is pushed along through dialog, and the little description to be had gives this book a high readability.
And yet despite how much talking there is between characters, everybody but the main character seems to lack personality and depth. If you look too closely, you can't really tell the difference between who Blair is talking to except by name. Neither is anyone ever really put off by just how many questions Blair asks, and regardless of the timing too.
I get that you need to get information from people in a mystery, but it still comes across as odd.
I stopped at 27%. It has good writing, interesting characters, and different murder plots...BUT. I hate the plot device of a main female character, usually a witch, and a new one at that, who feels compelled to solve the murder on their own = contra to instructions from the local law enforcement officials. It is SO overused. I now refuse to read those books - no mater what!
Amazon synopsis: Blair is one step closer to finally getting her own wand and becoming a real witch-in-training.
The only person standing in her way is the notoriously grumpy wand-maker wizard. One small problem: he's just hired her to find him a new assistant, and the job is cursed. With every possible employee turning into a rodent, it's up to Blair to get to the bottom of the mystery.
Nobody in town likes the wand-maker. There might be a dozen people with a grudge… or he might be hiding another secret of his own.
Between work, magic lessons, and taking care of her unconventional familiar, she'll be lucky to sneak in time for a date with retired paranormal hunter and town security guard Nathan… if she can unravel the mystery without a wand of her own.
Another good read. She having trouble filling the last request, that has come into the recruitment agency, for an apprentice wand maker. The more she looks into it, the more confused she is. Over 20 people have gone for the job and each seem too have disappeared within weeks of starting. Too make matters worse the wand maker has told her she needs to find the answer of why his apprentices have been turned into mice. Throw in her exams, dates with the local hunk, some spells misfiring, a dead body, being arrested for murder and trying to locate the mice for a fun read. The plot is a bit sillier than book 1 but it just adds to the charm. The characters are evolving and it's good to see her growing as a witch. However it does end on a sort of cliffhanger, a note asking her to meet her family.
This is the 2nd in this series. It is a cute little series with a nice cast of characters.I like the storyline and its an easy read. I look forward to the next one. Since I don't normally write reviews unless I have something specific to say, here's the break down of how I rate my books...
1 star... This book was bad, so bad I may have given up and skipped to the end. I will avoid this author like the plague in the future.
2 stars... This book was not very good, and I won't be reading any more from the author.
3 stars... This book was ok, but I won't go out of my way to read more, But if I find another book by the author for under a dollar I'd pick it up.
4 stars... I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be on the look out to pick up more from the series/author.
5 stars... I loved this book! It has earned a permanent home in my collection and I'll be picking up the rest of the series and other books from the author ASAP.
Blair has to find a new apprentice for Mr Falconer, the wand-maker.. sounds easy enough but he's obnoxious and when Blair does a little bit of research it appears that not one of the 20 apprentices he's had this year has ever been seen again.. Can she find anyone prepared to risk it?
She's not just worrying about her job.. she's studying to earn her wand licence and Mr Falconer has made it clear that no apprentice for him means no wand for her.. and she's not allowed to discuss it with any witches. When Blair's suspicions are aroused by his behaviour she wants to find the missing trainees rather more than providing him with another.. but he holds the power of the wands and she's balancing on a very thin line.
Entertaining witchy cozy mystery series. Blair group in the human world takes a job in an out-of-the-way place that no one‘s ever heard of. When she arrives she search to find out somethings different about this place. Also everyone think she’s a witch and come to find out cheers at least half of which the other half is fairy. And entertaining mystery series or she seems to always find dead bodies and to the consternation of the gargoyle police keeps sticking her nose in to find out who done it. Follow long as her and her friends stumble through investigations and solve mysteries. Check it out
Witch in Training (A Blair Wilkes Mystery Book 2) was written by Elle Adams. Blair Wilkes continues to adjust to her new life in Fairy Falls, UK. However, her powers are acting a little wonky and she can't figure out why. Although she is looking forward to getting her wand. That causes her to cross paths with the wand-maker who just happens to keep loosing his apprentices. Can Blair figure out what is happening to these young wizards or will she get caught in a trap? Overall, this was another enjoyable read.
*I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review* Another book by Elle Adams that I enjoyed. I did like the first book in the series slightly better. The main character has a tendency to involve herself in everyone else's business. This time she at least had a better reason for being involved. The mystery itself was fun and she continues to build relationships in her new town.
When Blair is tasked with finding the wand maker a new assistant, she starts to investigate the reason he is going through them so quickly…
Another enjoyable mystery involving the half-witch and her misadventures in magic. This is a cosy paranormal mystery, which means there’s humour, magic, as well as a mystery (and a few magical mishaps). It’s an enjoyably entertaining book, perfect for the armchair sleuth who enjoys their mystery with a touch of magic!
This is the second book I have read in this series and it has kept me in the dark till the end again. Just a small negative the editing is really bad in some places and actually meant the story made no sense and stopped some of my enjoyment but I will persevere with the rest of the series
Just kidding. I’m really enjoying this series so far. The story lines are fun and the characters are well written. There are moody, grumpy men but thankfully not the love interest of our main character. Romance takes a back seat to the actual plot of the book. I’m looking forward to Book 3.
This is a good follow-up to the start of the Blair Wilkes series. Blair is still trying to settle into her new reality; the mystery is well-imagined, with a couple of surprises; Sky is a puzzling charmer; and, the slow development of Blair's family picture deftly lures the reader toward the next book.
This series is just fun to read. Blair is always getting herself in trouble but manages to get out too. The romance is there but takes a backseat to the mystery. I enjoyed the different supporting characters and will look forward to the next books adding more detail to them. I have already bought the next book and can’t wait to get started!
I enjoyed this mystery. Blair must discover who placed a curse on a wand maker. There are several suspects. I like humor in the plot. Blair has an unusual usual mice problem. There are surprises in the plot. I recommend this for anyone who likes witch cozy m.ysteries .
Witch in Training (Book 2 of A Blair Wilkes Mystery)
Yeah! Just finished this story and I am so thrilled with how it ended. So great! Don't want to ruin it for you, so can't give you any more hints. Blair certainly has her hands full trying to learn how to be a witch and/or may be a fairy? She has Nathan to date and a cat that might even be a familiar and her very own wand!
Witch in Training (A Blair Wilkes Mystery Book 2) by Elle Adams. Blair has a cantankerous client, a wand maker, who over the last year has had 20 apprentices. No one seems to find this wrong but Blair is suspicious enough to try and investigate. At the same time she is working hard at learning witch craft.
Blair is such a fun character to read about. She’s always getting involved in matters not her own yet she’s good at it. I truly enjoyed the humor, drama and friendship in this one.
Blair Wilkes continues her exploits in Fairy Falls, once again landing herself in a position to investigate a mystery...And once again facing Steve the Gargoyle in the wrong circumstances! Fun for all!
Great story and the mystery had so many twists and turns that all and sense! I only figured out half of it. I love Blair, she's a klutz and th a makes her even more likeable.
Can you really discover how and who started the curse?
Blaire is still coming to terms with who she is and what while searching for her parents. Weaved In with a possible new romance. Find out what happens in the latest episode. Enjoy
There were a few places that were confusing. The conversation was either lacking needed language or it didnt really connect well. The story jumped around with little reason for doing so. But overall I enjoyed the story, itself.
Blair seems to attract trouble even when she is just doing her job. She has another mystery to solve before she can continue on her skills as a witch. Once again the characters are well-written and I highly recommend this series of books.
I like that it kept me guessing to the end. Liked the storyline. Looking forward to the next book. Blair has a way of stumbling into tricky situations. Can she keep juggling her need to find answers and the time it takes to study magic. Time will tell.
This author knows how to draw you in and keep you entertained, her writing style is fabulous as her characters are loveable and her world invites you in to stay a while
I love the characters in this series, they're funny and cleverly written. I believe this book will be enjoyed by most readers who like the cozy genre. Well done!
The series so far has been a hoot. Laughter abounds on nearly every page. Interesting characters and enough plot twists and turns to keep you guessing. Looking forward to MORE!!
I really enjoying this series of books it's great to have books set in UK and finally have a by of British humour I really love Blair looking forward I future adventures and mishaps
