Le Loup #16

The Wolf Who Learned Self-Control

Rate this book
Wolf can’t tell which emotion he is feeling sometimes; happy, sad, excited, jealous, there are far too many. When his moods begin to change without warning, Wolf’s friends begin to worry, and aren’t sure how to handle the confused whirlwind of their companion’s feelings. Finally, Wolf decides that enough is enough, and sets out to tame his ever-changing emotions, a feat more easily said than done. How exactly does he intend to manage his moods?

Like most of us, Wolf has some character defects and some off-putting behaviors. But he's working hard to make some changes. Along with some help from his friends and some calming yoga that helps him center himself and let go of unhealthy emotions, Wolf tries out some new behaviors. He has a bit of a setback, though, when he misinterprets the actions and comments of his friends, Louie and Wolfette while they are making cookies. When he takes offense when there is none intended, he insults them and has to decide whether to keep sulking or to go back to them and apologize. By the end of the story as readers watch Wolf build his own little cabin and then find the bright side to the rain that is falling, they will see that he is well on his way to controlling his emotions. Of course, the book offers great examples about behavior for young readers who can learn from Wolf's mistakes and frustration. I continue to enjoy this series, originally published in France, with its adorable animal characters and situations, all easy for readers to recognize themselves in. The illustrations rely on Wolf's big eyes to express the emotions perfectly. Anyone can tell just at a glance how he's feeling, and most of us have been in his situation before. Hey! If Wolf can mend his ways and try new behaviors, the rest of us can too.

Translated from French, this is a fine addition to the series of books about Wolf and explores his emotions.

Wolf's friends are tired of his wide mood swings, so offer to help give him some tools to soothe and center himself when upset, to apologize when he has hurt other's feelings, and to work slowly and thoughtfully when over-excited.

Though the story is a bit convoluted, it is a fun little title to help children put a tag on their feelings and offers suggestions on how to move on from them. Digital illustrations by Eléonore Thuillier are lively, bright and full of energy, well-matched to the breezy text.

Recommended for PreSchool-grade 2.

Linda historia

A nice book about learning to reign in emotions, and apologizing when they get the best of you. I would have liked more tactics to work through your feelings then just yoga, though. It felt very rushed, Wolf did some yoga poses and suddenly he's not losing his temper anymore.
