I really enjoyed this title that focuses on the paintings of Edward Hopper which he did during his summer vacations in Glouster, Massachusetts and on Cape Cod where he and his wife had a summer home at Turo. The physical size of the title appropriately 10 by 12 inches allows the reproduction of these shore, boat, lighthouses. and beach homes to be seen in much greater detail making them much more accessible to the detail as whole as the overall look of the painting. Hopper is known more for his urban, lonely, nighttime city scapes, this title is a perfect
way to view his other side. Very happy to discover the publisher Prestel and will seek more of their titles. And way when I was in Turo, Massachusetts did the tour guide not mention that Hopper had spent summers there painting?

This book talks about a specific painter and the different ways, techniques, and paintings that he does. It has a lot of words, but the pictures of the paintings make up for them. The paintings are full of splashes of colors that make the things in them seem lively and lifelike. This is definitely a good book for children to read with their parents, or just look at the pictures. It sparks imagination and curiosity for many.

This book offers the background and information of Hopper’s youth, his upbringing by the Hudson River, and his life in various seaside locations, including Cape Cod. It’s rather educationally instead of creatively written, but includes many pictures of Hopper’s work, and some explanation of the style he is know for. I love the variety of work shown.
