The Three Orders: Feudal Society Imagined

In The Three Orders, prominent Annales historian Georges Duby offers a tripartite construct of medieval French society, a construct which depicts men separating themselves hierarchically into those who pray, those who fight, and those who work. He considers how this medieval theory of orders originated, discusses its complex history, and shows how different interests--cultural, political, and economic--were involved in its creation and use. The Three Orders shows how the tripartite schema come to occupy a central position in social thought and clarifies the manner in which feudal society viewed itself.

The book begins with a brief examination of a popular early seventh-century treatise on the “three estates” of France. Duby then jumps abruptly back to the period in which the notion that French society was divided into three estates was born. It was the bishops of a tottering Capetian state who drew upon older imaginings of hierarchical order to project a new rationale for royal power and peasant subservience; their ternary scheme collapsed with the monarchy itself, to be resuscitated in the twelfth century, when the maturing of feudal-vassalic institutions and the conflict between Capetians and Plantagenets contributed to a definitive restoration of monarchical trifunctionality. In tracing the fortunes of the three orders, Duby shows how the tripartite schema came to occupy a central position in social thought and clarifies the manner in which feudal society viewed itself.

An intellectual history of medieval thought regarding the three orders of medieval society: those who ran the state, those who mediated with the divine, and those whose labor fed all three. Until, of course, the time when that framework was no longer applicable, which Georges Duby locates in the 12th century, when merchants and clerks appeared. In retrospect, the tripartite framework, as articulated by the learned men of the Middle Ages, seems like a justification for setting up a hierarchy, which sort of seems inevitable in a society where kings are rulers are not the heads of churches. Duby provides a lot of close analysis of the basic texts, but, at least for me, the greatest pleasure came from reading about moments when the tripartite system broke down--rebellious vassals, or, even better, the occasional warrior-churchman.

A partir dos textos medievais, Duby analisa as contradições na construção e concepção da sociedade feudal francesa, uma concepção que se prolongou muito para lá do fim convencional da Idade Média e de cujas reminiscências se guardam ainda hoje sinais.
A natureza para-marxista da obra não prejudica a seriedade da análise.

Prečo čítať túto knihu?
1. Duby je popredným francúzskym medievalistom/historikom stredoveku, súčasť školy/hnutia Annales, čiže minimálne pre študenta histórie povinná jazda.
2. Samotná kniha je veľmi inšpiratívna spôsobom, akým je napísaná. Autor sa veľa pýta, ešte viac sa snaží odpovedať. Pracuje 90% s prameňmi literárnej povahy, snaží sa pochopiť myslenie a hlavne ideológiu doby.
3. Čitateľ pochopí základnú myšlienkovú predstavu stredoveku - delenie na tri rády/stavy/funkcie.
4. Ponúka totálne dejiny - to znamená, že okrem toho, že rieši známe tri rády -tí, čo sa modlia, tí čo bojujú a tí, čo pracujú - a snaží sa odhaliť pôvod tohto sociálneho konštruktu, venuje sa tu aj takým veciam ako rozmach mníšstva v 11. storočí, rozmach rytierstva a mešťanstva v 12.-13. storočí, rôznym krízam stredoveku (kacíri, spor mnísi verzus duchovenstvo) a ukazuje, že stredovek nie je "temným stredovekom", kde sa nič nedialo, ale naopak, že je to obdobie plné zmien, na ktoré museli elity doby neustále reagovať aj práve využitím a aplikovaním ideológie troch rádov/stavov v ich živote.
Prečo knihu nečítať?
1. Človeku, ktorý sa v stredovekej histórii neorientuje, sa bude čítať veľmi ťažko. Autor spomína veľa mien vzdelancov, kanovníkov, mníchov, ktorých diela rozoberá do poslednej bodky. Rovnako spomína mnohé udalosti, iné súvislosti zas považuje za samozrejmosť, dovolí si skákať od jedného k druhému bez toho, aby povedal, prečo. Ľahko sa v tom dá stratiť, ťažko sa hľadá to najpodstatnejšie, pretože všetko vyzerá ako dôležité.
2. Práve prílišná detailnosť a neustále odbiehanie od hlavnej témy môže niekoho rušiť pri čítaní, pretože kniha nemá jednotnú "dejovú" líniu. Neznalému (napr. mne) to občas spôsobuje chaos a neustále sa vracanie v texte.

Probably the most readable book out there about the schema of medieval French society being made up of the titular three orders, those who pray, those who fight, and those who work the land, and oh man does that ever sound tedious now that I'm typing it out. I know it sounds bad, but I found this book to be pretty interesting and surprisingly readable. My only caveat is that you really have to pay attention, because if you let your mind wander away from the text you can skip down half a page without realizing it and become totally lost. I suppose saying it's the best concentration-demanding 400 page tome on the organization of medieval society isn't much of a compliment, but if you've made it this far without being scared off, I'd recommend at least checking it out of your local library.

nicely written book about the development of the trifunctional ideology in medieval france. he also talks a lot about class relations and modes of production so you know it's cool.

Comme évoqué, il me semble, dans un autre avis sur un autre ouvrage de Georges Duby, ce dernier est une figure française majeure du médiévalisme. Quiconque s'intéresse au Moyen-Âge verra une référence à Duby à un moment ou à un autre.

Je trouve personnellement que Duby n'est pas le plus facile à lire, ce qui explique que je ne mette que 3 étoiles à cet ouvrage qui est pourtant l'une de ses oeuvres les plus majeures. J'ai en effet dû m'accrocher à la lecture tout au long du livre, quelque chose que j'ai également dû faire avec d'autres de ses livres. Bref, il s'agit peut-être juste de moi mais j'estime que Duby n'est pas une lecture facile et cela n'est pas négligeable car ses raisonnements ne sont pas toujours faciles à suivre si l'on ne s'accroche pas.

Toujours est-il que Les trois ordres ou l'imaginaire du féodalisme constitue une analyse en profondeur du système classique qui régit la société médiévale aux Xe et XIe siècles. En effet la société est divisée en 3 ordres: ceux qui prient, ceux qui combattent, et ceux qui travaillent. Les derniers sont soumis aux 2 premiers et entre les 2 premiers, le tout premier tend à se considérer comme supérieur. Ce modèle bien connu qui a duré jusqu'à la Révolution est examiné par Duby à travers diverses sources venant d'intellectuels des Xe et XIe siècles qui cherchaient à justifier cette organisation du monde. Duby explique bien par ailleurs que ce système est fort inégalitaire et énonce même les tentatives qui ont eu lieu pour remettre ce système en question. Il indique également certains points intéressants montant les failles de ce système: les classes bourgeoises des villes qui ne semblent pas tout à fait correspondre à un seul des 3 ordres ou l'exclusion des femmes et des enfants par exemple.

Au final, cet ouvrage de Duby reste l'un des ouvrages, si ce n'est le plus approfondi sur le sujet à ma connaissance mais il serait souhaitable qu'un livre plus récent et écrit différemment et de manière plus accessible soit disponible car la lourdeur du texte en limite, selon mon humble avis, la dissémination permis les amateurs.

Magistral. En Los tres órdenes o lo imaginario del feudalismo vemos a un Duby ya consolidado como un medievalista referente en los estudios sobre el feudalismo. La primicia es sencilla: explicar la dinámica social de la Francia feudal. Esta sociedad está organizada y dividida -retrospectivamente- en tres órdenes: los que pelean, los que rezan y los que trabajan.

El análisis del autor es riquísimo en el trabajo de fuentes primarias. Centrando su estudio entre los siglos X y XII, el abordaje del génesis e institución del modelo tripartito es, sin lugar a dudas, de lo mejor que se puede leer sobre el tema.

No es una obra convencional. Protagonista de la rama de la Escuela de Annales dedicada a la historia de las mentalidades, Duby expone las características del imaginario feudal con herramientas muy bien logradas.

Si bien es un clásico, más allá de los fuertes tintes mutacionistas, Los tres órdenes o lo imaginario del feudalismo es una lectura obligatoria y bienvenida para los interesados en el génesis del sistema feudal.

-lectura pesada en ocasiones; -digresiones que sacan del ritmo de la lectura; -demasiados datos, en principio, no relevantes y que entorpecen la continuidad; -lenguaje y forma de escritura demasiado adornada de circunloquios; -se circunscribe al área de la actual Francia.
-erudición; -explicación ideológico-social del origen del feudalismo; -algunos pasajes interesantes al mencionar luchas ideológicas por el poder.
