Rylie’s life has hit a serious snag. Cheated on, lied to, and suddenly homeless and unemployed, her entire world has capsized. All that’s left to do is cut line, start over, and move into her parents’ basement . . . temporarily.
Bring on the boomerang jokes.
The perfect solution to all of her problems could be a job as an urban park ranger—whatever that is. But finding a dead body stuck in a catfish trap on her first shift leaves her wondering if she’s waded in a little too deep.
If it wasn’t for the appearance of Luke Hannah—the lead investigator on the case and her first love—she may have cut her losses and returned to the help wanted ads. But now Rylie is determined to prove herself . . . in more ways than one.
When the authorities pin the murder on the wrong man, Rylie casts out to catch the real killer and clear the innocent man’s name—at the risk of losing her job or even becoming catfish bait herself.
Perfect for fans of Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum series, CATFISHED, the first book in the Rylie Cooper Mystery series, is a witty murder mystery baited with snarky humor and a hint of romance.
Stella Bixby is a native Coloradan who loves to snowboard, pluck at the guitar, and play board games with her family. She was once a volunteer firefighter and a park ranger, but now spends most of her time making up stories and trying to figure out what to cook for dinner.
Looking for a book that glamorizes sexual harassment? Then this is the book for you. Less than 11% in, a married character, Antonio, continues to grossly and shamelessly hit on the protagonist, Rylie, who is also his new subordinate and coworker. He is reminded by another coworker of the sexual harassment training they have and to watch what he says, to which Antonio replies that you “can’t tame an Italian stallion” and laughing about it while Rylie acts charmed and pleased and swoons over him.
Then, they’re at a bar a couple chapters later and Rylie narrates how uncomfortable he makes her and how he grabs her arm when she’s trying to leave to hold her there, and is so upset that Luke thinks she likes him and couldn’t tell how uncomfortable Antonio makes her. Yet, a few pages ahead, she excuses his behavior because he’s cute. Literally, chapter 3: “it was a good thing he was cute — and technically my superior — because otherwise I’d have kneed him in his happy place.” Oh, okay, so sexual harassment is okay when the guy is cute? Good to know. She goes on how her “head screamed objections, but the smell of his cologne was as intoxicating as his voice and his smile.”
After Rylie calls him out for being married and he brushes it off and makes excuses, Rylie continues to fawn and gush over him the whole novel. Literally, she goes from one chapter talking how he makes her so uncomfortable and how was Luke not able to see that, to the very next chapter where she describes her chest tightening with jealousy because he’s talking/flirting with another coworker. This troubling behavior and thinking continues on, as Rylie spends the whole book describing how inappropriate he is but also narration how he’s hotter than bacon off the griddle and she would love to take a bite. Her and her mother even lament him being married at the end of the book.
Yes, sure, in the time of #MeToo and #TimesUp, let’s write a character who continually sexually harasses his coworkers and makes them feel uncomfortable, but let’s romanticize it and make him such an irresistible stud that everyone just laughs off and brushes off his sexual harassment. Fucking disgusting.
Rylie herself is also just an obnoxious, unlikable character. She’s is a week out of a breakup (a relationship she was in for five years), but she’s already swooning over practically every guy in the novel and crying of Luke, her first love, and acting like a sixteen year old girl because how dare he talk to someone of the opposite sex?! Doesn’t he know that she’s the only girl he’s allowed to glance in the general direction of?! Not to mention how horrible she just is in general — like after inviting Shayla to dinner with her parents, Shayla tells Rylie she’s happy they’re friends. Rylie’s narration about that? “I hadn’t had a friend — a girl friend — in a really long time, and I could definitely do worse than Shayla.” Really!? This girl who has been nothing but kind and sweet to you and thanks you for your friendship, you dismiss off with “I guess I could do worse.”
There was nothing remotely likable about this girl. It’s obvious the author was trying to go for a Heather Wells vibe (Meg Cabot’s murder solving heroine), but missed the part where Heather was funny and charming and, you know, actually a good person.
The writing is also nothing special. You can read this book in two hours. The mystery is barely there or fleshed out. I very obviously will not read any more books in this series.
Thanks to NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I often make the mistake of reading the reviews on goodreads before reading a book, and the reviews for this book are generally not good. It has a goodreads rating of 3.24. I generally won't read a book unless it has a 3.75 rating or higher, but since I requested this book, I felt I had to give it a try.
Riley Cooper is a woman in her late 20's who has moved back home with her parents because she's discovered her boyfriend was cheating on her. She gets a job as a summer park ranger, thanks to her being a firefighter (not sure what one has to do with the other). It's a pretty male dominated group of rangers, with the Rylie and two other females (3 out of 17 rangers were women).
Someone has been setting traps to catch catfish, and a local fisherman named Ronnie has caught himself a record catfish. People aren't happy that this has happened, and Ronnie ends up dead (yes, because he caught a large catfish - huh?). Rylie and her supervisor Ben find the body in one of the traps. Rylie's first love, Luke Hannah, is the detective called to the scene to find the killer.
There are so many issues with this book, I don't even know where to start. First and foremost, I was BORED. This book is about finding the killer of a fisherman. A fisherman who was killed because he caught a big fish. It's just so stupid.
The second big issue is the fact that the men Rylie work with treat her like she's a piece of meat. Her married co-worker Antonio hits on her relentlessly. She's constantly winked at. It's creepy.
Third, the mystery was so poorly written. By the time the killer was revealed, I'd completely lost interest in the story. I didn't care who it was, mainly because the killer murdered a man over a fish.
Fourth, there was no closure with Rylie and Luke. There was a lot of tip-toeing around their "will they/won't they" but no closure. There was also no epilogue, and I know there will be another book, but I have zero interest in reading it, so I'm checking out.
Overall, the story was just not at all believable. Luke and Rylie also had zero chemistry, and despite the fact that it creeped her out that Antonio hit on her, she found him attractive (again, huh?)
This is not a good book. I would not recommend it.
Catfished by Stella Bixby was a cute cozy mystery.
Rylie Cooper, a 20 something young woman who has moved home after a break up with her boyfriend and giving up her job because of the break up. Even though she has had to move back in with her parents, she is determined to start her life again in her home town. I did enjoy finding out more about park rangers which is a unique "job" for a cozy mystery character. I found Rylie to be emotionally all over the place as the story progressed which often made me want to skip pages but I didn't because of the mystery. The plot was smoothly paced, there weren't many suspects and the twists and turns kept me guessing until the reveal. The secondary character were all unique individuals which added to the story. This was an easy read and I give it 3.5 stars.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book from the author via NetGalley. All of the above opinions are my own.
Loved this book! Great lead character, I could totally relate to her. Story line was well written and made for a exciting read! I was left guessing until the last minute, which is something I really liked, it wasn't obvious or cliche. Can't wait for the next book to come out, I must know what happens next in Rylie's life, I am "hooked"!
I was hooked right from the beginning until the end. As an outdoors and mystery fan this one was just the right thing for me. Will start the next book in the series right away.
A big plus is that it took ~2 hours to finish, so for my rush to double my books read this year, it's a winner.
Unfortunately that's about all it's good for. A guy gets killed because of a fish. And even though main character Rylie acknowledges that it's stupid, it's just too stupid.
Rylie as a character isn't very likeable either. She's a judgemental b-word that is dealing with her now ex-boyfriend of 5 years cheating on her....and going gaga over a married man. Not to mention her weird "mark your territory" attitude toward high school boyfriend Luke, who she works with and I'm assuming will eventually get with at the end of the series? This girl is toxic. And the "witty" observations about the other characters - especially other female characters is gross.
The mystery...is stupid. She makes dumb decisions because why? The trope? I dunno.
And then it ends with very little satisfaction, except you find out who is willing to kill over a fish. A fish.
I'm not sure if I want to continue this series as it is highly advertised for fans of Janet Evanovich. I was a huge Evanovich fan and followed her Stephanie Plum series for over a decade but in the end gave up on it as there was no development in the romantic department - just back and forth from one guy back to the other. And I fear that the Rylie series is similar when looking at the blurb of the other books in the series. To be honest, I'm not sure I'm up to this ride. Been there, done that and didn't like it much. So this will probably be the only Rylie book I read. It was a good book, I just don't like it when the female cannot make up her mind which guy she wants to be with and the murder case here was a bit boring. I'm not much into fishing. So, 3 stars and be done with it.
Catfished is the first book in the Rylie Cooper Mystery series. Meet Rylie who has recently moved back with her parents after a bad breakup. She lands a new job, finds a dead body, and runs into her high school sweetheart. All in her first week! Well written with an entertaining storyline that has the right amount of mystery and romance. This is one of those series that you just know will be a huge hit. I will be impatiently waiting for the next adventure with Rylie!
Easy, engaging read. Finished it by late morning and the sequel that night. I personally enjoy camping and parks/nature preserves, so these have been fun reads.
Catfished is a quick and lively, lighthearted mystery, in a similar vein to Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum series, and a good introduction to Rylie Cooper, newbie summer park ranger in Colorado.
Rylie is your typical cozy heroine: temporarily out of work, newly out of a relationship, back living with her parents accompanied by her pet, with a potential new (old) love interest on the scene and a knack for finding trouble.
Whilst the mystery side of the story is sound, it is not particularly complex; I did guess whodunit and thought Rylie could have been a bit quicker on the uptake! That said, the story is fun, Rylie is amusing and I would be happy to read more about her (and Shayla and Luke)! I think this is a promising start to the series.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC of Catfished.
Catfished by Stella Bixby is the 1st book in the Rylie Cooper Mystery series, and a great start. Rylie returns home to live in her parents basement after she loses her boyfriend, job, and home. Rylie gets a job for the summer as a park ranger. When Rylie and her trainer find a dead body, the mystery begins. I really enjoyed this book, and am looking forward to Rylie's next adventure. I love the unique people and situations in this book. I found this book to be a quick read, that keep me guessing until the end. If you love mysteries, I recommend this book.
I received this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
I know this is a series, but this book didn't feel like it was enough to stand on its own. It could have been fleshed out much more. I would've liked more details of the main character's backstory and a satisfying ending with her love interest.
Good thing it was less than 200 pages, otherwise it might have been a DNF.
The main character was kind of immature, eg. Nasty thoughts about others appearances, fatphobia, being mad but also delighted that a married guy was flirting with her, and her lack of communication with the love interest.
It's an easy read though, and if you're in the mood for something quick and light this might be suitable.
I just received this book from Net Galley for an honest review. Wonderful start to a great series. Rylie has to go back to live with her parents with no job, money or relationship. She needs a job, quick. Car payments wait for no woman.. A summer job working as an Urban Park Ranger may be just the thing, if she only knew what that was. Murder was not what she signed up for, especially on the first day. Fishing for the biggest catfish has never been more dangerous. Most of the other Park Rangers are hot, flirty and married. A murder brings out the police and an old flame. Since Rylie loves a good mystery, she has a hard time not doing a little investigating of her own. Can't wait til the next book to see who wins her heart. Love this character.
When I was deciding to review this book, I read the description and wasn't blown away. I didn't expect to really enjoy it as much as I do. I loved the park ranger and fishery setting. It was unique and rarely seen in cutesy romance novels.
Catfished is such a fun little read. I read this book in about two days, it was just too cute to put down. I think Riley is the sweetest most relatable character in the book. She was living in her parent's house, in the basement. She is a twenty-something-year-old. She has recently been through a breakup and is trying to find a job. She is basically every twenty-something year old out there right now.
She isn't a perfect character or one without faults. She can get her self into some seriously bad situations. Potentially even dangerous positions. She had limits and morals and I really loved that aspect of her.
Overall I enjoyed the book. It was a rather fun read. I liked the characters, the mystery, the plot points and the dialog. I really liked the writing style. I am excited to potentially read more from this author and read the next book in this interesting series.
Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book was provided by the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This is a an excellent, funny mystery that is the first in a very promising series. The main character is working as a park ranger for the summer, and she discovers a dead body in a fish trap. She and her colleagues have to figure out who wanted to murder the man and who did the deed. I am looking forward to reading the next books in the series.
"Catfished" is well written and edited. The ranger background is excellent and the plot has plenty of twists and red herrings. My only reservation has been mentioned in other reviews--the main character's tolerance and even acceptance of Antonio's behavior--definitely sexual harassment. It doesn't lesson Rylie's purely physical attraction to him and in this day and age that decreases Rylie's stature as a character.
A cosy murder mystery with a amazing FMC and a weirdly captavating backgroundstory + romance! Yea I dont know How or why this story about a girl becoming a park ranger and meeting her ex and finding a dead body completely entranced me, But I AM HOOKED! Will definitely keep going in this series! 😍
Catfished had me laughing out loud. It hits every single stereotype a book could cover from cheating husband to the other woman. Its a fast pace cozy mystery readers can enjoy. Just don't take the story serious it is meant to be fun and poke fun.
Thank you to Netgalley and the Publisher for the advance copy of Catfished by Stella Bixby
This was pretty bad. I listened to the audio book which was nicely narrated, but the story was juvenile and seemed geared toward a much younger crowd than me. Too bad I own the next two books in the series - it was a boxed set. I MIGHT listen to them if I need them for a particular challenge. 1.5 stars rounding up since I did like the whole concept of the "urban park ranger".
Its a cozy mystery that doesn't happen at a bookstore or bakery!
Its nice that the main character in this book has a background as a volunteer firefighter. It means her being cool, and not totally disgusted by a dead body actually makes some sense.
Now, does she do lots of things that would definitely qualify as stupid in real life as she investigates? Absolutely.
Was it a light, fun read that left me wanting to know what happens next for Rylie? 100%!
This book was kinda cute. My husband is after our state record for largemouth bass, and this book is all about fishing so I enjoyed that aspect of it. The head Park Ranger murders the fisherman who got the record for the largest catfish because he was jealous. The plot is pretty weak and the main character kind of reminds me of Stephanie Plum, but it kept me entertained so I give it 3 stars. If the sequel was free, I’d read it. 📚🐉

In this story the main character Rylie, finds her self jobless and just out of college after a terrible break up with her live in boyfriend. She is forced to go back and live with her parents and searching for a new job when she is suddenly reunited with an old high school love and in the middle of a murder mystery. I enjoyed this light-hearted story very much. The main character is very relatable and as a reader, I connected well with all of her situations and experiences. With the sweet mix of romance, comedy, and mystery I loved the characters and how the story was put together. I can not wait til the next book in the series to find out what happens to this character! I read this book from an advanced readers electronic copy.
