Get ready to binge read an all-new 5-issue superhero mystery debuting in its entirety with art by rising star Margaux Saltel, making her series debut, and written by Elsa Charretier and Pierrick Colinet (IDW's Infinite Loop). Cover by Stephen Byrne. All the world's superheroes have disappeared overnight, and it's up to their untrained, largely overlooked teenage sidekicks to find out what happened--while dealing with the biggest crisis Earth has ever known--much to the public's displeasure. Can they save the day? Part of the comiXology Originals line of exclusive digital content only available on comiXology and Kindle.
ELSA CHARRETIER is a writer and comic book artist.
After debuting on COWL at Image Comics, Elsa co-created THE INFINITE LOOP with writer Pierrick Colinet at IDW.
She has since worked at DC Comics (STARFIRE, BOMBSHELLS, HARLEY QUINN), Marvel Comics (THE UNSTOPPABLE WASP) and Random House (WINDHAVEN, written by George R.R. Martin).
She has also written THE INFINITE LOOP vol.2 as well as SUPERFREAKS, and is a regular artist on the STAR WARS ADVENTURES books.
This book has a pretty simple set up. Earth has superheroes who showed up one day in a van. They also disappear and their sidekick take over. Also, all the villains are gone and people doubt and are mean to the sidekicks for some reason, but our plucky protagonists will prove themselves.
The art is actually really cute looking which would lead you to think this is going to be a fun kids book, but it's marred by some absolutely absurd albeit yet mean-spirited gratuitous anti-religious stuff. It contradicts the rest of the tone and feel of the rest of the book.
Beyond that, the book is average with a touch of cute. The book's characters have some moments that are worthy of sympathy (even if they are a bit overplayed), but there's not special enough about this issue to get me to keep reading.
When you've had a rough day and want some time to relax... you might pick up a comic. Some comics are action driven- that can be okay, especially if it has decent artwork... that is NOT this comic.
So maybe the comic is story driven- good writing with good characters and an interesting plot... that is so NOT this comic.
What you don't want is an agenda driven comic. A comic where they try to preach to you their viewpoint as THE correct viewpoint. Where Jesus is literally mocked, his death by crucifixion questioned by a hero, where political correctness is equated with heroism... that IS THIS COMIC!
It is agenda driven alright and it drove me away... I have no interest in any more in this series. I barely finished this one. Childish artwork, one dimensional characters, and a preachy tone. Three solid strikes. It's out!
As soon as I saw the cover I thought, "Wow! Look at that diversity!" It's an ensemble cast of sidekicks-turned-superheroes and I was so down to try it for that alone! Not only do you get body shape and racial diversity, you also get queer representation! Given the creative team, I'm not surprised.
Issue 1 is the "big event" that makes all the superheroes (who were apparently assholes) disappear, and how the sidekicks handle it. I love the use of social media and technology to communicate, as well as showing how toxic social media can get and the effect it has on the people it's targeted at (super relevant right now). It also touches on body shaming, insecurity, friendship, visibility, abuse and the effect it can have, and sexism.
Sure, the story is still "getting to the meat", but with everything that's already in it waiting to be developed, this series has the potential to be groundbreaking.
Thankfully, the rest of the series is already available for download!
This graphic novel had an adorable art style that reminded me of a mix of gwenpool and the wicked and the divine with some modern texts in there which was awesome. There were also some behind the scenes content I also enjoyed reading. Though this volume was short it presented an all star cast of characters when it came to diversity and powers. And because of these characters I want to continue. However if you are only able to read this volume I probably would not have been satisfied with the ending. Because of these points I have to give this graphic novel a 4 out of 5 stars looking forward to reading more
Normally I read Marvel or DC but I decided to give this a chance not thinking much of it as it didn't have the red rectangle or the blue circle on the cover but I actually enjoyed it, I will definitely be reading the rest of the series and more after that if it comes available. Thanks Comixology!
Fun story with fun characters. Nothing extra. I really like Blue Aura, the BBW black superheroine. She's sassy and fun.
What really bothered me, and brought the story down for me, was the constant use of stupid words to cover up cussing. They could have just let them cuss a few times instead.
Good art (although if you don't like 'Vermont's this is not for you), crisp script that sets up the characters effectively, and, more importantly, fun to read.
This is a fun, bright new superhero universe that has a formulaic mystery and premise. Strong first issue has convinced me to read the entire mini series.
Today is my first time with the comic and it’s pretty decent I,d say btw I hope there is a new wone soon comeing out tho other than that comixology super freaks seams to be cool
This is awesome! relatable to today, well written, and diverse! A lovely walkthrough of some of the interesting processeces of making the comic, and a nice introduction to the writers, creators, artist, and letterror so that you can easily find more of their work! Excellent and interesting artwork, especially interesting to see the differences between distance and close in proximity scenes, beautiful artwork. Hopeful, and with really great characters!
