When Jen answers an advertisement to create a 1915 herb garden for a TV documentary, she expects it to get her out of a money hole, not to change her life... Borderline recluse Theo Grainger is scarred mentally and physically from an appalling fall seven years ago. Adjusting to the presence of a TV documentary team next door is one thing. Dealing with Jen Matlock, who helps people in trouble whether they want her to or not, is something else entirely...
A maths graduate, former computer programmer and erstwhile playgroup leader, Jan Jones writes contemporary romantic comedy, Regency romances, romantic suspense (often with a paranormal twist), cosy quirky mysteries, serials for women's magazines, short stories and poems. She won the RNA’s Joan Hessayon Award in 2005 with her debut novel Stage by Stage which came about through her experience of chaperoning her daughter during a touring production of Joseph and his Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. When in Georgette Heyer territory, she uses her fascination with history to write a series of Newmarket Regencies (The Kydd Inheritance, Fair Deception, Fortunate Wager etc) set 200 years ago in her nearest town. As with all writers, elements of her life also inspire her many short stories for women’s magazines (one of which won the RNA Elizabeth Goudge award in 2002). This could be why she gets funny looks whenever she takes out her notebook during conversations in the bar. Jan organises the annual RNA conference and is firmly of the opinion that the Romantic Novelists' Association is the friendliest, most supportive organisation around.
. "We had been summoned home en masse to meet Ewan's new fiancee and her parents...I'll just run through everyone, shall I? "... commented Mother.
After elaborately describing each of Jen's sibling's careers, her mother's eye lands on her and she flippantly sputters
"Jen ... Jen runs her own herb business, Wild About Herbs."
After receiving an eviction notice for her business, Wild About Herbs, at its current location, Claire scans a newspaper advert that says,
"URGENT! WANTED! Herb garden and maintenance for WWI country house drama documentary. Expert knowledge of herbs/wild plants & their uses (including medical)essential. Wansdale Manor. Start Immediately."
Jen was very knowledgeable about herbs and was magically drawn into the ambiance of the manor and its gardens, where the documentary was to be filmed. She worked very hard on the set, on her own orders, and still had time to explore and discover fascinating things about the actual people in the documentary (unbeknownst to the director and his crew), the handsome neighbor, and the development of a romantic interest. I was exhausted just reading about all she was able to accomplish during each 24-hour time frame.
This is an interesting book that flawlessly melds life, love, history, with those in the present. This is a clean book, which I appreciate, although there were some tastefully mentioned bone-melting kisses exchanged. This book is able to stand on its own and promises a rewarding H.E.A.
Wow, this is so much better than the first book and I thought that was great. Great storyline, wonderful characters that you live the story through. Tremendous! She has always felt like a failure, her brothers all seemed to have her mother's approval but hers was never forthcoming. Even though she had special healing abilities in her massages, her mother had always ignored that. Not so her father, a qualified doctor. But now she was getting her her business evicted and all because the council wanted to build a supermarket! The advert in the paper however seemed almost prophetic and more so once she had been hired to build a herb garden for the film crew. Now all she had to do was build it. But finding the diary was an eye opener and all she needed was to find the bounty. Not that she was the only one looking. Theo, the market grower was also looking, why? How will the documentary go? Will they find the bounty? Where will she move too? A wonderful story of a family that has splintered but now has hope of being healed. Great play on the complex characters involved and more than anything it is a wonderful story of how two people who feel broken are made whole.
An easy to read and appealing story. Jen’s herb and garden business make her the least successful of her siblings, but an opportunity to create a 1915 herb garden for a tv show is too good to miss. Drama doesn’t just happen on TV, but while making it too. While the rather reclusive next door neighbour Theo could; be a help or a hindrance.
What can I say? Every book of Jan’s has been a pleasure to read. I could use superlatives, but why not just say that in whatever the genre she writes, and there are several, each book is an incredibly enjoyable read. This particular one also has fascinating information on herbs and their healing powers, all woven in with the story. I could almost smell them.
A lovely summer read, I warmed to the characters and enjoyed the links with the past and present. I sat in the garden reading this during a spell of warm weather, the perfect place to enjoy such s book. Loved it!
